IHI's first-quarter results for the fiscal year ending March 2027 showed revenue of 374.5 billion yen, operating profit of 73.2 billion yen, and profit attributable to owners of the parent of 53.5 billion yen. The operating profit achieved 29.3% of the full-year forecast, faster than the even distribution of 25%. Meanwhile, the stock price fell from the 3,000-yen range to the 2,700-yen range in August 2026, dropping about 13% over the past month from a high closing price of 3,028 yen to a low of 2,638 yen. The company's order backlog at the end of March 2025 was 1.4873 trillion yen, equivalent to about 0.9 years of annual revenue, but the thickness of orders and stock price movements are not necessarily linked. By segment, the aerospace, defense, and space segment had the largest backlog at 605.9 billion yen, followed by resources, energy, and environment at 437.6 billion yen, social infrastructure at 217.0 billion yen, and industrial systems and general-purpose machinery at 206.1 billion yen. Valuation metrics show a P/E ratio of 17.1 times and a P/B ratio of 4.21 times, with an equity ratio of 26.9%, well below the machinery industry median of 67.3%.
BAE Systems Confirms Robin Radar Bid and Secure Chip Tie-Up
BAE Systems confirmed involvement in a potential acquisition of Dutch drone tracking specialist Robin Radar Systems and announced a new collaboration with Arteris and SiFive focused on secure microelectronics for U.S. defence projects. The microelectronics partnership is part of a wider U.S. programme aimed at supply chain security in defence-focused chip design. BAE Systems is a £52.6b aerospace and defense group with operations across the United States, the United Kingdom, the Middle East, Australia, Saudi Arabia and wider Europe. The next test is whether these initiatives turn into identifiable contract activity, such as BAE Systems being named as the acquirer when Robin Radar is formally sold or being listed on larger Trusted and Assured Microelectronics follow on awards. Clear order wins that reference drone detection, secure SoCs or related U.S. programmes would show these announcements are feeding into the £75b plus backlog rather than staying at the pilot stage.

Japan Weighs Counting Railway Upgrades as Defense Spending
Japan is considering counting railway infrastructure improvements toward its defense spending as it seeks to strengthen military logistics and respond to U.S. pressure for higher security budgets, Kyodo News reported Sunday, citing government sources. The proposal would be part of revisions to three national security documents expected by year-end, and officials are also weighing a broader definition of security spending that would include investments in artificial intelligence, space technology and energy infrastructure. Japan currently targets defense and related spending equivalent to 2% of GDP, while the United States has urged allies to increase military spending to 3.5% of GDP. Under the proposal, railway projects could include adding tracks, expanding tunnels to accommodate military equipment and maintaining lightly used routes considered strategically important, drawing on lessons from Ukraine where rail networks have played a critical role in moving supplies during Russia's invasion. Japan's existing defense-related infrastructure program focuses on airports, seaports and connecting roads, with 24 airports and 33 seaports designated for improvements, and for the fiscal year ending March 2027 the government allocated 225 billion yen, or $1.42 billion, for related infrastructure projects, including 118.4 billion yen for roads, 53.4 billion yen for seaports and 53.2 billion yen for airports.
BAE Systems Wins $230.1m Marine Corps Contract for 32 Amphibious Combat Vehicle Recovery Variants
BAE Systems has secured a $230.1m contract to produce 32 Amphibious Combat Vehicle Recovery variants for the U.S. Marine Corps. The award gives investors fresh visibility into the company's defense backlog and program pipeline, which has surged to £75 billion, supported by higher defense spending commitments across NATO, the US, UK, Europe and the Indo-Pacific, including the UK targeting 3.5% of GDP on defense by 2035 and Japan planning to double spending by 2027. The stock closed at £18.60, while the most followed analyst narrative anchors fair value at £23.23, framing the shares as 20% undervalued. BAE Systems has posted a 1-day share price return of 1.28% and a year-to-date return of 6.04%, though its 1-year total shareholder return declined 4.47% even after an 83.74% gain over three years and a 253.55% gain over five years. The narrative could be knocked off course if ESG-driven divestment gathers pace or if any large government program is scaled back or cancelled.

Berenberg downgrades Rheinmetall to Hold, cuts price target to €1,020
Berenberg downgraded Rheinmetall to Hold from Buy and cut its price target to €1,020 from €1,600, sending the German defense company's shares down more than 1% Friday on uncertainty over medium-term growth. Analysts led by George McWhirter rebuilt their bottom-up model of 417 contracts and order opportunities, driving Berenberg's group revenue forecast to €37.6 billion in 2030 versus consensus of €41 billion, a 28% compound annual growth rate, and lowered its 2030 revenue and EPS estimates by 6% and 8%. Berenberg estimates 181 contract opportunities worth €410 billion and includes €201 billion in its forecasts, a 49% win rate, warning that significant additional contract awards beyond its pipeline are required for sustainable growth beyond 2030 as major European contracts reach a steady state. Near-term visibility is high with a backlog of about €80 billion, including €56 billion of firm orders, but revenue under contract falls to 29% in 2030, with the Weapons & Ammunition division the weakest at only 16% under contract, the lowest of the five divisions. Rheinmetall shares are down more than 50% from their 52-week high of €1,933.50, and the stock trades at 18.1 times 2027 earnings for a 30% EPS CAGR over 2028-30, which Berenberg said offers valuation support but may limit re-rating potential because visibility after 2030 is a core determinant of defense sector multiples.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Launches New Maritime Self-Defense Force Submarine Shogei, Scheduled for Commissioning in March 2028
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries held a naming and launching ceremony on the 8th at its Kobe Shipyard for the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force's new submarine Shogei. It is the seventh vessel of the conventionally powered Taigei-class submarines and is scheduled to enter service in March 2028. It has a total length of 84 meters, a beam of about 9 meters, a standard displacement of 3,000 tons, a crew of about 70, and a construction cost of about 80.5 billion yen. According to the Maritime Self-Defense Force, it has improved detection capabilities and a structure that makes it difficult for underwater noise to leak, making it harder to detect from the outside. Shogei is written in kanji as "翔鯨," and Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi selected the name from candidates solicited from Maritime Self-Defense Force units and other sources.
