Russia has invited North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to make an official visit to Russia, according to a Russian deputy foreign minister. Russia's TASS news agency reported the development on Thursday, September 24, adding that the schedule for the visit will be coordinated through diplomatic channels. Previously, President Vladimir Putin had extended an invitation to Kim to visit Russia during their joint summit in Pyongyang in June 2024, and issued another invitation when the two met during a large-scale military parade in China in September 2025. Speculation that Kim may visit Moscow within this year has grown after North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui traveled to Russia in July at the invitation of the Russian Foreign Ministry. Kim has visited Russia twice before, in 2019 and 2023, but both trips involved meetings with Putin in Russia's Far East, and Kim has never visited Moscow. Meanwhile, relations between North Korea and Russia have grown steadily closer since North Korea sent troops to support Russia in its war with Ukraine.
