G7 floods market with reserves as Iran war and storm squeeze supply

  • G7 releases 100 million barrels, front-loading diesel The G7 and IEA agreed to release 100 million barrels of oil reserves over four months, with diesel first, and Trump dropped a diesel export ban. This adds supply and pushes crude and diesel prices down, hurting oil producers like Exxon and Chevron but easing costs for airlines, truckers and consumers.

This is the biggest new supply-side event of the period, directly moving oil and fuel prices and the stocks tied to them.

  • Hormuz attacks and Gulf storm tighten supply again Iran attacked tankers and threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz, while Hurricane Isaias shut in about 15% of US Gulf output. Brent topped $104 and WTI $92, lifting producers like Exxon and Permian Resources and tanker owners, but raising fuel costs for everyone else.

This is the main new force pushing oil back up, offsetting the reserve release and driving producer and tanker shares.

  • China halts refined fuel exports, Asian refining margins hit records China suspended refined fuel exports in October, tightening Asian diesel, gasoline and jet supply. Diesel refining margins hit a record above $87 a barrel, boosting non-Chinese refiners like Thai Oil, Star Petroleum and Bangchak, while fuel buyers and transport firms face higher costs.

This is a new supply restriction that directly lifts refining profits and is a key story for energy sector investors.

  • Bond yields spike on war-driven inflation and hawkish Fed The 30-year US Treasury yield hit 5.7%, a 24-year high, and UK 30-year gilts topped 6%, as the Fed held a hawkish stance and the IMF warned of belt-tightening. Higher borrowing costs pressure banks like Societe Generale and Deutsche Bank and weigh on stocks broadly.

This is the main new monetary and market-wide risk, linking the oil shock to higher rates and bank sector stress.

Pakistan declares state of emergency, suspends provincial government of Imran Khan's party

Pakistan's president declared a state of emergency on October 11 and ordered the suspension of the provincial government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which is run by Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, or PTI. Khan, a former prime minister, remains in detention. The move immediately stripped the elected provincial administration of its governing powers. Pakistan's presidential office said President Asif Ali Zardari signed off on the recommendation of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif after the federal cabinet approved the measure, citing the provincial government's failure to crack down on the threat from militant Islamist extremists. Zulfikar Bukhari, a close aide to Khan and a PTI spokesman, responded that the decision was utterly absurd and stressed that the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government was the only legitimately elected government in the country, warning that the decision would lead to bloodshed and instability. Meanwhile, PTI supporters have held prolonged protests for several days to press for Khan's release and have threatened to march on Islamabad in the coming days. Pakistan's constitution allows the federal government to take over some or all of a provincial government's functions during a state of emergency, but the presidential office has not yet specified how the province will be administered going forward.

US DOJ investigates ABC, CBS, CNN, NBC and Fox News over White House press pool boycott

The US Department of Justice said on Saturday, October 10, that it is examining whether major US television networks violated federal antitrust law after they jointly boycotted participation in the White House rotating press pool, in retaliation for the administration's revocation of press credentials from three news organizations, including CNN. The five major television networks targeted by the investigation are ABC, CBS, CNN, NBC and Fox News. A Justice Department spokesperson said in a statement that coordinated boycotts among competing businesses may constitute a violation of the Sherman Antitrust Act, and the Antitrust Division is gathering facts to determine whether these media organizations did in fact breach antitrust law. Normally, CNN is one of five television networks, alongside ABC, CBS, Fox News and NBC, that jointly operate the White House television press pool, a arrangement in which they share costs and take turns sending crews to record the president's activities in restricted spaces before distributing the feed to television stations nationwide. After the ban order on September 19, all five networks, including Fox News, jointly suspended their participation in the television press pool entirely and refused to send crews to fill in. Then on September 24, Timothy Kelly, a US federal district judge, ruled that the White House's press exclusion order was likely unconstitutional and issued an order requiring the administration to immediately restore access and press credentials to the journalists.

Houthis fire missiles at Riyadh airport, killing 12 and injuring 309; Trump poised to send troops into the fight

Iran-backed Houthi rebels fired missiles at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, for the third time in a week, killing at least 12 people and injuring 309. It is the deadliest attack on Saudi Arabia in more than 10 years. Saudi civil aviation authorities said the attack on October 10 killed 12 people immediately: four Saudis, two Bangladeshis, and one civilian each from the United States, Jordan, Palestine, Syria, Sudan and Egypt. Saudi Arabia's threat warning system failed to send an alert before the incident, after two earlier attacks on the same airport killed four people. The Saudi-led coalition announced it would take decisive retaliatory measures, while a Houthi spokesman posted on the X platform declaring success in shutting down Riyadh airport and warning airlines worldwide to avoid Saudi airspace, designating the area a military operations zone. US President Donald Trump said at the White House that the United States is considering the possibility of sending troops to join Saudi Arabia in striking the Houthis, and will speed up a decision on action quickly after receiving the latest attack report. The fallout from the attack forced all airlines to divert flights away from Riyadh and temporarily suspend operations at the main airport serving the capital's population of more than 8 million. Data from the Flightradar24 website showed that all flights heading to Riyadh were cancelled or rerouted, with only military helicopters hovering over the airport.

US administration blatantly pushes 'giveaway' policies ahead of midterms

With the US midterm elections set for the 3rd of next month, the Trump administration is blatantly pushing 'giveaway' policies. President Trump has said that if the ruling Republican Party takes both the House and Senate, he will hand out 5,000 dollars, about 790,000 yen, to every adult citizen, and he aims to gain an advantage in the election campaign by championing bold measures against high prices. Since September, the administration has also proposed paying 90 dollars, about 14,000 yen, per person to 20 million enrollees in public health insurance for the elderly, and amid a surge of opposition over the construction of artificial intelligence data centers, a plan to hand out cash to nearby residents has also emerged. According to a CNN poll, only 27 percent of respondents said they approve of Trump's handling of the economy. According to the bipartisan think tank the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, the cost is expected to reach 1.2 trillion dollars, about 190 trillion yen, roughly 1.5 times the cash payments implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic, and it could trigger higher inflation and rising interest rates.

Trump Awards Science Medals to Musk, Nadella and Four Other Tech Titans Hours After Vance Targets Them

The Trump administration suspended the PERM green-card labor certification program for Microsoft and other companies on October 8, the same day President Donald Trump awarded top science medals to six tech billionaires, five of whom are immigrants. Vice President JD Vance, speaking at the White House that morning as chair of the White House Task Force to Eliminate Fraud, accused Microsoft of abusing the H-1B and PERM programs more than any other U.S. company and said the government had decided to suspend the PERM program for Microsoft due to an ongoing investigation. The suspension also affects Adobe and six IT outsourcing firms: Cognizant, Infosys, Tata Consultancy Services, Wipro, HCL Technologies and Capgemini. Microsoft pushed back, saying it only files H-1B petitions for those who meet the visa category's rigorous standards, while India called Vance's comments deeply offensive as USCIS data showed 70% of H-1B petition beneficiaries approved in FY 2025 were born in India. Later that day, Trump awarded the National Medal of Science to Elon Musk, Sergey Brin, Jensen Huang and Lisa Su, and the National Medal of Technology and Innovation to Satya Nadella and Michael Dell. The PERM suspension does not stop the companies from applying for H-1B visas, but the administration added a $100,000 fee to each new H-1B petition in September 2025, up from the prior $2,000 to $5,000 range; federal courts blocked and vacated the fee in June and September 2026, and the government is appealing.

Bessent withdraws from IMF–World Bank meetings in Bangkok, sends US Treasury team instead

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will not travel to attend the 2026 Annual Meetings of the Boards of Governors of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank Group, or IMF–World Bank 2026, in Bangkok, Thailand, due to urgent domestic commitments. In a statement, the US Treasury said it has assigned Deputy Treasury Secretary Francis Brooke and Treasury Under Secretary for International Affairs Erin Brown to lead the US delegation to the meetings in his place. The delegation's agenda includes discussions with allied countries on addressing policy issues and structural imbalances that hinder global economic growth, while pushing for transparency and public debt management. The United States, as the largest shareholder of the IMF and World Bank, wants both institutions to focus on their core missions and support policies that promote economic stability, productivity, and global economic growth. The withdrawal comes amid volatile global financial markets, with long-term US government bond yields rising to their highest level in nearly 25 years, compounded by an energy crisis stemming from conflict in the Middle East. Bessent is expected to return to the international stage at the G20 leaders' summit in Miami, Florida, in December 2026, when the United States holds the 2026 G20 presidency.

Binance VIP Customer Tied to Iranian Revolutionary Guard Funding Network, WSJ Reports

The Wall Street Journal reported on October 9 that a "VIP customer" of the cryptocurrency exchange Binance is suspected of involvement in a funding network for an Iranian military organization. The customer was reportedly the head of a crypto-related company run by a fundraiser for the Iranian government. According to explanations from U.S. and Israeli authorities, the fundraiser who ran the company is said to have directed a secret payments network for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The first sign of suspicious transactions emerged from dealings between this customer and Iranian money changers, after which U.S. and Swiss law enforcement authorities questioned Binance about the customer's account. The account was reportedly accessed repeatedly from Tehran, Iran's capital. According to Binance's internal records, this customer received preferential trading fees and personalized service, and investigators needed approval from senior management to terminate the business relationship. Binance told the WSJ that it halted transactions on the related accounts in late 2025 and closed the last related account in May 2026.

Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, in his capacity as Director of the National Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Command, chaired a meeting of the National Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Command at the C.S. Pattani Hotel in Mueang Pattani District, Pattani Province, to monitor the situation and relief efforts for flood victims in the southern region. Provincial governors from the southern provinces attended the meeting. The Prime Minister said that according to forecasts from the Meteorological Department, many provinces remain at risk of flooding from heavy rainfall expected to cover almost every province in the south, from Phetchaburi Province down to Malaysia, from now until the end of October 2026, with no sign of easing. It is therefore necessary to rehearse and prepare, with emphasis on advance forecasting, preparing shelters to evacuate residents, especially vulnerable groups, bedridden patients and the elderly, as well as safeguarding the food supply chain, including raw materials, fresh food, vegetable oil, gas and seasonings, and coordinating with food and transport operators. Disaster-response machinery, water pumps, pumping equipment, motorboats and vehicles must be prepared in advance. The Prime Minister issued 7 guidelines for preparing to manage the flood situation in the south: monitoring and assessing the situation to designate risk areas and watch points; inspecting and improving drainage systems; preparing personnel and resources through integration between areas; evacuating and warning the public; monitoring, following up and reporting results to the National Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Command, the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, and the Ministry of Interior; publicizing clear emergency reporting channels; and establishing readiness centers for each agency to integrate operations in a unified manner.

Ireland proposes cutting 7-year EU budget by 141 billion euros to 1.62 trillion euros

Ireland, in its capacity as president of the Council of the European Union, has proposed a new draft long-term budget for the years 2028-2034, reducing the total by about 141 billion euros, or nearly 8%, from the European Commission's original plan. This brings the overall budget framework down to 1.62 trillion euros, from the 1.76 trillion euros the European Commission had set when calculated in 2025 constant prices, or 1.98 trillion euros at current prices. The reduction particularly affects the budget categories for competitiveness and security. The new proposal aims to bring the positions of all 27 EU member states closer together, after they remained divided over the size of the long-term budget framework for the coming seven years. The new draft was put forward ahead of next week's European Council meeting, where member state leaders will again discuss the long-term budget, with the goal of reaching an agreement by the end of 2026.

Trump Expects Iran War to End Soon, Says Oil Prices Will Fall Once Conflict Ends

US President Donald Trump expects the war with Iran to end very soon, whether through negotiations or military operations, and insisted that oil prices will fall sharply once the conflict is over. Speaking at a campaign rally in Syracuse, New York, on Friday, October 9, Trump said the conflict would end soon one way or another, and warned the Iranian government that if it does not comply with all demands, there may be no country of Iran left. He also claimed that more oil is currently being shipped through the Strait of Hormuz than before the war began, and called on refineries and fuel retailers to cut prices. Trump had previously announced that the United States would not launch a new round of strikes on Iran before the midterm elections on November 3, but has not ruled out resuming military force after the vote. Meanwhile, the Russian government said Trump welcomed Russia's involvement in finding a settlement to the conflict with Iran, after discussions with President Vladimir Putin. In Yemen, the situation has escalated, with the Saudi-led coalition saying it destroyed 136 Houthi military targets in a large-scale operation, including missile launch sites and radar stations. Yemen's internationally recognized government separately claimed its forces carried out more than 2,750 strikes within 24 hours and put more than 1,400 Houthi members out of action, though those figures have not been independently verified. The latest surge in violence came after the Houthis attacked several airports in Saudi Arabia, including King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, killing three Saudis. In addition, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed responsibility for attacking the liquefied petroleum gas carrier NV Sunshine near the Strait of Hormuz, and warned that vessels using the shipping route without permission could be targeted even outside the Strait of Hormuz. US Central Command said US forces have ordered 133 commercial vessels to change course under the US government's blockade measures against Iran.

US, Ukraine and Europe hold six-hour talks to speed up peace plan before presenting it to Russia

Negotiating officials from the United States, Ukraine and Europe held six hours of talks in Miami, Florida, on Friday, October 9, to draft a joint proposal to end the war in Ukraine, aiming to reach an agreement within the coming weeks before presenting it to Russia for consideration, in a bid to make diplomatic progress before winter sets in. The talks were attended by Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, representatives of the United States, along with Ukrainian officials, representatives from Europe and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, or NATO. Key issues discussed included security guarantees that the United States and European countries might give Ukraine after the war ends, an economic recovery plan, and the path toward European Union, or EU, membership. Territorial issues were also discussed, but no details of the proposal under consideration were disclosed, and the negotiating team also discussed the possibility of creating a future security framework between Europe and Russia to promote long-term regional stability. The push for peace talks comes amid differences over the US government's approach to Russia, with US President Donald Trump announcing that Russia had agreed to ship diesel to global markets to help lower fuel prices, while the Trump administration temporarily eased sanctions on Russian fuel exports, a move criticized by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and members of the US Congress. Zelensky warned that revenue from fuel sales would help support Russia's military operations. Russian President Vladimir Putin, meanwhile, signaled that an immediate return to peace talks was unlikely, citing Ukrainian drone attacks on Moscow. The negotiating team is now trying to establish a common position before beginning discussions with Russia on an agreement to end the war.

Trump Says Russia to Ship Millions of Tons of Diesel as US Eases Sanctions Temporarily

US President Donald Trump revealed that Russia has agreed to ship millions of tons of diesel to the US market and global markets, while the US government temporarily eased some sanctions on Russian fuel exports to ease soaring domestic energy prices. Trump said Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed to ship more than 300,000 tons of diesel in the first phase, followed by 500,000 tons in November and another 1 million tons shortly after. Russia will also deliver another 3 million tons of diesel within a short period, depending on the condition of its refineries. The total volume of diesel offered amounts to about 36 million barrels. The US Treasury Department issued a temporary license allowing the sale of Russian-origin diesel on global markets and suspended some sanctions until April 2027, amid tight global diesel supply. The International Energy Agency estimates the market was short about 1.6 million barrels per day of diesel in September, while the average US diesel price rose to 6.28 dollars per gallon on Friday, October 9, from 3.68 dollars in the same period a year earlier. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky criticized the easing of sanctions, warning that opening the way for Russia to increase petroleum product exports would give Moscow additional resources to continue the war. Analysts also doubt whether Russia can deliver the full promised volumes, since Russian refineries have been attacked by Ukraine and Russia still faces limits on diesel exports. Andy Lipow, president of Lipow Oil Associates, expressed uncertainty about how much additional diesel could reach global markets, while Clayton Seigle, an energy security scholar at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, estimated the deal could allow Russia to export more than 100,000 barrels per day of additional diesel.

WTI closes up 36 cents after Hurricane Isaias cuts US oil output by 1.3 million barrels per day

West Texas Intermediate crude futures on the New York market closed higher on Friday, October 9, 2026, supported by Hurricane Isaias moving toward the northern Gulf of Mexico, which prompted several oil companies to shut in crude production in US waters. The November WTI contract rose 36 cents, or 0.39%, to settle at 91.85 US dollars per barrel, while the December Brent contract rose 44 cents, or 0.42%, to settle at 104.72 US dollars per barrel. The US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management said that as of Thursday, October 8, producers had shut in about 1.3 million barrels per day of capacity, or 62.9% of current oil production, after the storm moved close to a key energy-producing area in the Gulf of Mexico. However, the market still faced pressure from hopes that the United States and Iran would move ahead with negotiations to end the war, as well as China's plan to resume exports of refined products after a temporary suspension during the Golden Week holiday. Analysts at PVM Oil Associates said President Donald Trump's stance on Iran, along with China's return to refined product exports, were key factors limiting the rise in oil prices, while the United States continued to apply economic pressure on Iran by announcing sanctions on 17 individuals, networks and vessels linked to Iran's crude oil, oil products and petrochemical shipments.

IMF flags AI, energy crisis and public debt as three make-or-break challenges for the global economy

Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, delivered a speech at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy in Singapore on 7 October, opening the curtain on the 2026 Annual Meetings of the IMF and the World Bank. She identified three major challenges shaping the direction of the global economy: the surge in AI technology, an energy price crisis that remains at elevated levels, and public debt climbing to a record high. She noted that AI hardware and related technology products account for more than one tenth of global goods trade, and warned that AI is accelerating the widening of global economic inequality. Oil prices remain at around 100 dollars per barrel, and Brent crude futures indicate prices will stay high through 2027. Global public debt is meanwhile nearing levels last seen after the Second World War and looks set to soon exceed 100 percent of world GDP. For the meetings hosted by Thailand from 12 to 18 October, Dr Ekniti Nitithanprapas, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, said Thailand will present the Bangkok Blueprint, a blueprint for modern digital finance setting out 12 practices for financial institutions and countries worldwide to counter online financial threats and cybercrime. He expects it to generate roughly 1.05 billion to 2.25 billion baht in immediate circulation in the Thai economy, from more than 15,000 participants from 191 countries.

Saudi Aramco Restores Full November Crude Supply to Europe After Pipeline Attack

Saudi Aramco has reportedly told European oil refiners it will deliver all the crude oil they requested for November after the kingdom's main cross-country pipeline returned to operation following attacks. At least three European refiners confirmed they will receive full allocations of crude from the state oil company next month, according to Bloomberg News, which cited people familiar with the matter. The resumption eases a tight European market that had forced refiners to hunt for alternative sources after Aramco notified them last month that they would receive no crude in October following an attack on the East-West pipeline. Orlen SA, the largest buyer of Saudi crude, issued more than ten tenders to secure replacement barrels during the disruption. Saudi Arabia typically exports an average of 700,000 to 800,000 barrels per day of crude to Europe, according to ship tracking data compiled by Bloomberg.

US sanctions ICC, Netanyahu praises Trump

The United States has announced direct sanctions against the International Criminal Court, measures broader than the previous US sanctions targeting ICC prosecutors and judges, and also covering private companies that provide services to the ICC. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed admiration for President Donald Trump and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio for their decision to impose these measures, stating that the ICC is threatening the sovereignty of nations and democracies worldwide. Rubio said President Trump will not allow the ICC to prosecute Americans, and that the United States will prohibit transactions with this court, cut off its sources of resources, and undermine its ability to operate. Meanwhile, Nazhat Shameem Khan, a deputy prosecutor of the ICC, condemned the measures as an attempt to undermine international rule of law, but affirmed that the ICC will continue its work in every investigation and every prosecution. In November 2024, the ICC issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and Yoav Gallant, the former Israeli defense minister, on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Gaza Strip. The ICC currently has 125 member states, including all European Union members and all NATO members except the United States and Turkey, with its headquarters in The Hague, the Netherlands.

US sanctions ICC after former judge Pillay wins Nobel Peace Prize

The US government announced sanctions against the International Criminal Court, or ICC, just hours after Navanethem "Navi" Pillay, a former ICC judge, won the Nobel Peace Prize for her work in promoting peace and international law. Jørgen Watne Frydnes, chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, said Pillay played a key role in ensuring that war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide are prosecuted under the law. The United States has previously imposed sanctions on ICC prosecutors and judges, but the measures announced today are far broader in scope, including penalties on private companies that provide services directly to the ICC. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a statement that President Trump will never allow the International Criminal Court to prosecute Americans, and that the United States will bar transactions with this kangaroo court, cut off its resources and undermine its ability to operate. ICC Deputy Prosecutor Nazhat Shameem Khan condemned the sanctions, saying they are aimed at undermining the rule of law at the international level and will not be able to stop the court's work. The ICC currently has 125 member states, including all European Union members and all NATO members except the United States and Turkey, and is headquartered in The Hague in the Netherlands.

The meetings will discuss the global economy, inflation, energy prices, public debt, financial stability, war and geopolitics, and the impact of artificial intelligence on the world economy. IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva is scheduled to deliver a speech on Wednesday, October 14, from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. on the state of the global economy and the direction of the IMF's work. Earlier, at the Singapore meetings on October 7, she warned that "winter is coming" for the global economy, pointing to risks from higher energy prices, surging government debt, and the rapid development of artificial intelligence. Meanwhile, the yield on 30-year UK government bonds surged past 6.03%, the highest level since 1998, and oil prices jumped above 102 dollars a barrel. The IMF will use Thailand as the stage to release its October World Economic Outlook on Tuesday, October 13, at 9:00 a.m. under the theme "Resilience under Strain, Urgent Choices." In its July edition, the IMF projected the global economy would grow 3.0% in 2026 and 3.4% in 2027. The US economy was seen growing 2.3% in 2026 and 2.2% in 2027, China's economy 4.6% in 2026 and 4.1% in 2027, and Thailand's economy 1.9% in 2026 and 2.2% in 2027. Another highlight is the appearance of Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh, who is scheduled to take the stage with Georgieva on Friday, October 16, from 10:30 to 11:00 a.m. in a session titled "Managing Director's Fireside Chat with Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh" to discuss the US economy, inflation, interest rates, and the Fed's policy direction. The remarks are significant because October 17 marks the day the Fed enters its blackout period ahead of the Federal Open Market Committee meeting on October 27-28.

US Treasury Secretary Taps Shelton as China Adviser

The US Treasury Department announced on the 9th that Treasury Secretary Bessent has appointed Judy Shelton as an adviser focusing on China. Shelton is a figure whom US President Trump once nominated as a candidate for the Federal Reserve Board of Governors, and she has led the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the National Endowment for Democracy, and also served as a researcher at the Independent Institute and the Hoover Institution at Stanford University. During Trump's first administration, her nomination to the vacant Fed board seat stalled in confirmation amid bipartisan concerns that her seemingly partisan stance could undermine the Fed's independence. The Treasury Department said in a statement that Shelton will advise the Secretary on monetary policy, with a particular focus on assessing China's financial conditions.

EU Demands China Curb Auto Exports; Countermeasures on Table in Ministerial Talks

Maroš Šefčovič, the European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security, and China's Commerce Minister Wang Wentao held ministerial-level trade talks in Beijing on the 9th, in which the EU demanded that China curb exports of automobiles and other goods in order to reduce its trade deficit with China. The talks ran for two days starting on the 8th and were the first in-person meeting in about three months. Ahead of the talks, the EU argued for limiting the export volume of Chinese-made plug-in hybrid vehicles, and France and Germany jointly proposed a new system to restrict access to the EU market aimed primarily at China. The Chinese side pushed back, calling this "protectionism," and appears to have asked the EU to lift export restrictions on semiconductor manufacturing equipment. China's rare earth regulations were also a point of contention.

Global Oil Prices Fall More Than 1% as Trump Confirms No Attack on Iran Before Midterm Elections

Crude oil prices in global markets fell more than 1%, with Brent crude slipping below 103 dollars per barrel and West Texas Intermediate crude dropping below 91 dollars per barrel, after investors eased concerns about an Iran war when U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed that the United States will not attack Iran before the U.S. midterm elections on November 3. As of 6:30 p.m. Thailand time, West Texas Intermediate crude for November delivery fell 0.92 dollars, or 1.01%, to 90.57 dollars per barrel, while Brent crude for December delivery fell 1.53 dollars, or 1.47%, to 102.75 dollars per barrel. Meanwhile, Tasnim news agency, a semi-official Iranian outlet, reported that Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Iran has received U.S. comments on Iran's seven-day proposal and will send its response in the coming days. The proposal, submitted to the United States on September 22 through intermediaries on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, calls for ending hostilities and reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Oil prices were also pressured by a Reuters report that China, the world's largest oil importer, is preparing to resume exports of refined fuel after briefly suspending them during the Golden Week holiday, which would help ease tight supply conditions in global markets.

Japan's Defense Ministry to Study Faster Rocket Launches to Counter Satellite Attacks

Japan's Defense Ministry announced on the 9th that it will conduct research and study aimed at speeding up the launch of rockets that would carry new satellites into space, in preparation for attacks on the satellites used by the Self-Defense Forces. It began soliciting proposals from private companies on the 9th for technologies related to rocket manufacturing and launch methods, and after selecting operators in February next year, it will examine transport capacity, cost, and production systems. In recent years, the United States, China, and Russia have been advancing the military use of space, and the importance of the space domain in the security field is growing; the Defense Ministry is also moving quickly on responses, including formulating a space domain defense guideline last year, but shortening the time needed to restore functions when a satellite is lost has become a challenge. As specific research themes, it envisions stockpiling components and manufacturing parts using 3D printers, and for launch methods it will also consider sea-based, airborne, and vehicle-mounted or mobile options.

China pushes back on EU, insists it is not weakening the yuan after surplus nears 1.2 trillion dollars

The People's Bank of China issued a statement rejecting accusations that China deliberately weakens the yuan to gain a trade advantage, after the European Union called on Beijing to let the currency strengthen in order to reduce a record-high trade surplus. The statement said China has no need or desire to weaken its currency to gain a competitive trade edge, and has never pursued devaluation to compete with other countries. It added that blaming another country's currency for a loss of competitiveness, which leads to weaker fiscal and monetary discipline and complex structural problems, amounts to shirking responsibility for necessary adjustment. The episode comes as Maros Sefcovic, the EU's trade chief, visits Beijing to discuss ways to narrow the bloc's trade deficit with China. In 2025, China posted a record trade surplus of nearly 1.2 trillion dollars, equal to roughly 6% of gross domestic product. The European Union, meanwhile, is concerned about its trade imbalance with China, which stood at 360.6 billion euros, or 404 billion dollars, in 2025, up 15% from a year earlier. The worry is that this could lead to a new China Shock 2.0, after another wave of Chinese exports floods into markets and rattles the industries and economies of trading partners. Earlier, in June, European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde urged world leaders to discuss the yuan being undervalued, which she cited as one factor behind imbalances and a risk to the global economy.

Putin Confirms Russia Ready to Help Iran Resolve Regional Conflicts

Russian President Vladimir Putin told Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian that Russia is ready to do everything it can to help Iran resolve conflicts in the region. The meeting took place in the city of Turkmenbashi in Turkmenistan. The Kremlin said Putin noted that Iran has shown concrete efforts to end the conflict and has put forward new proposals for a peaceful settlement. Putin said relations between Russia and Iran continue to develop under the comprehensive strategic partnership treaty signed jointly earlier in 2025. Trade between the two countries grew by more than 21% last year and has maintained its growth trend in the first seven months of this year. Pezeshkian thanked Putin for Russia's support, saying ties between the two countries continue to expand in trade, economic and humanitarian areas. He criticized the United States for pursuing unilateral policies, saying Iran hopes to end the war as quickly as possible while ensuring that Iran's rights are respected. The Iranian leader also said Iran has exchanged initiatives with the United States and has revised and improved the U.S. proposals, and that the two sides will continue discussions through mediation once those initiatives are finalized.

India Rebukes U.S. Suspension of Microsoft, Indian Firms from PERM Program

India criticized the Trump administration's decision to suspend the Permanent Labor Certification program, calling it contrary to the shared ambitions of the two countries, according to a foreign ministry statement on Friday. The U.S. government on Thursday suspended multiple companies from using the Program Electronic Review Management system, as Vice President JD Vance called out rampant fraud in the H-1B visa program by the tech industry. Vance singled out Microsoft, saying no U.S. company had abused the system more, and the suspensions also target Cognizant, Infosys, Wipro, Adobe, HCL and Capgemini, firms either based in India or with large operations there. India described Vance's comments as unwarranted and said terminology carrying painful historical and colonial legacy connotations was deeply offensive, while its Ministry of External Affairs said talent mobility adds value to both economies. The suspension does not affect existing H-1B visas but could disrupt permanent residency and green card applications.

US seizes 7 domains in bid to stop Chinese hackers targeting critical infrastructure

The US Department of Justice said on Thursday, October 8, that it is seizing seven internet domains linked to a hacking group working with Integrity Technology, a Chinese information technology company, to disrupt attacks on critical infrastructure systems. In a statement, the department said the domains were used to scan for vulnerabilities and breach critical infrastructure systems in the United States and abroad, and that the operation was the second time the United States has publicly moved to disrupt infrastructure the company uses for cyberattacks. Earlier, in September 2024, the Justice Department announced it had taken down the company's botnet under a court order, after finding a network of more than 250,000 compromised consumer devices in the United States and around the world. Christopher Wray, who was director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation at the time, said Integrity Technology was behind a Chinese hacking group known as Flax Typhoon, which gathers intelligence and scouts targets for Chinese security agencies. The Chinese Embassy in Washington has not commented, while the Chinese government has consistently denied allegations that it carries out hacking operations.

Malaysia closes schools nationwide as over 2 million students stay home amid wildfire haze

Malaysia's Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek ordered schools closed today across Malacca, Negeri Sembilan, Selangor, as well as Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and the Rompin district in Pahang, leaving more than 2 million students nationwide at home as toxic haze from wildfires in Indonesia spread across the region. The Malaysian Education Ministry announced that schools in areas with high pollution readings for three consecutive days will also close on Monday, October 12. The closure order came just hours after Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar, the King of Malaysia, called for action, saying the health and safety of children should come first. Just two days earlier, Malaysia had ordered the closure of schools, including about 200 kindergartens and childcare centres, in the Batu Pahat district of Johor on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto had agreed to take the necessary steps to address the source of the haze. Singapore was ranked the most polluted city in the world according to IQAir data, raising concerns about the impact on this weekend's annual Formula One race, which is expected to draw at least 300,000 local and foreign visitors.

Japan condemns Russia's request to hand over Japanese ICC president

Russian prosecutors have filed an extradition request for senior officials of the International Criminal Court, or ICC, including ICC President Tomoko Akane, who is Japanese. Russia's Prosecutor General's Office sent the request to the Netherlands and other countries seeking the handover of nine ICC officials who were convicted in absentia by a Russian court last December. The dispute stems from 2023, when the ICC issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin and other senior officials, alleging responsibility for the unlawful deportation and transfer of children from occupied areas of Ukraine to Russia. Japanese Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Masanao Ozaki said at a press conference in Tokyo that Russia's move is unjustifiable and unacceptable, adding that the Japanese government intends to respond appropriately, including by filing additional representations with Russia, and will maintain close communication with the ICC and other member states. The request comes as the ICC faces pressure from the United States, a Japanese ally, whose government under President Donald Trump announced sanctions on senior ICC leaders, including Akane, last August. Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi disclosed that she and President Trump exchanged candid views on the ICC during a meeting on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly last September.

Bitcoin Rebounds to Stand at $82,000 After Trump Shelves Iran Strike Plan

Bitcoin bounced back to $82,000 on Friday after the cryptocurrency market recovered from its late-Thursday low, lifted by remarks from President Donald Trump that eased fears of a U.S. strike on Iran. In a post on Truth Social at 12:17 p.m. Eastern time, Trump said the United States will definitely not attack Iran before the midterm elections on November 3, describing talks with Iran as productive, though the U.S. blockade will remain in full and complete effect. Bitcoin selling lost steam near $80,300 after the post, and the price has since recovered to touch $82,000, with Ether, XRP, Solana and other major coins also paring their losses. The selloff had begun roughly 24 hours earlier amid fears of a fresh escalation in military conflict between the United States and Iran, after Axios reported on October 7 that the Pentagon had ordered U.S. Central Command to prepare for a return to major military operations in Iran, driving WTI crude futures from $89 to $93.20 before they fell sharply after Trump's post and were last trading at $90.69. Meanwhile, concern over Bunker Mode, proposed by Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake, is being contested, with Yehuda Lindell, a leading cryptographer at Coinbase, calling the worry mere FUD, while Hasib Qureshi of Dragonfly described it as a genuinely sober warning, and Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin said the risk from AI-accelerated mathematics is real but pointed to lattice structures rather than elliptic curve cryptography. Analysts are watching the $81,000 level as key support for Bitcoin, with Vikram Subburaj, chief executive of India-based exchange Giottus, telling CoinDesk that a break below $81,000 could send the market down to $80,000 and then to a more important on-chain support near $77,200, while BitDelta said $82,000 is a key resistance level and a drop below $80,316 would increase downside risk.

China denies deliberately weakening the yuan, insists it does not use its currency to gain trade advantage

China's central bank issued a statement rejecting foreign accusations that China is deliberately weakening the yuan to gain a trade advantage, affirming that China has no need and no intention to devalue its currency to compete with other countries, and that blaming other countries' exchange rates for declining competitiveness is a way of avoiding responsibility for solving one's own problems. The move came as Maroš Šefčovič, the European Union's trade chief, visited Beijing to discuss reducing the EU's trade deficit with China, amid European leaders' concerns over a "China Shock 2.0." China's trade surplus hit a record of nearly 1.2 trillion US dollars in 2025, equal to about 6% of gross domestic product. Meanwhile, EU data show that in 2025 the EU ran a trade deficit with China of 360.6 billion euros, or 404 billion US dollars, up 15% from 2024. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz estimated that the yuan is undervalued by 25-30%, while European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde called on world leaders to discuss the issue, and Goldman Sachs said in August that the yuan is undervalued by at least 20% according to the firm's valuation model. But China's central bank argued that model estimates alone cannot prove that the yuan is undervalued, stressing that market mechanisms play the decisive role in setting the exchange rate, and that China does not set a pre-determined target level for its currency or intervene in long-term currency trends. The yuan has strengthened by about 4% against the US dollar since the start of this year, and since China reformed its exchange rate system in 2005, the yuan has appreciated by about 23%, from 8.27 yuan per US dollar to about 6.7 yuan per US dollar today. In addition, China's central bank said China will begin reporting additional foreign exchange-related data to the International Monetary Fund starting in 2027, and under its 2026-2030 economic development plan, China will drive growth mainly through domestic demand, promoting consumption, expanding effective investment, and opening up further.

Saudi Arabia and UAE Back Japan's Plan to Strengthen Southeast Asia's Energy Security

Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, or UAE, have expressed their readiness to support Japan's plan to strengthen Southeast Asia's energy security, after the war with Iran disrupted oil supplies. Officials from both countries joined a special session of the Asia Zero Emission Community, or AZEC, in Manila in the Philippines yesterday, together with ministers from 11 member countries, including Japan, Indonesia and Australia, to discuss cooperation on oil procurement and strategic oil reserves. Japan is the country that initiated the AZEC framework, and Takagi Kei, deputy minister at Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, told reporters that the two Middle Eastern countries had expressed their readiness to cooperate in boosting Asia's oil reserve capacity, and that AZEC's ministerial action plan had been approved by member countries in order to increase oil reserve capacity and member states' ability to cope with the risk of supply disruptions. Back in April, Japan announced 10 billion dollars in financial assistance to Southeast Asian countries affected by soaring crude oil prices and oil supply problems, covering help with procurement, oil storage and emergency reserves. Before the war, Southeast Asia imported more than half of its crude oil from the Persian Gulf, while Japan imported about 90% of its oil from the Middle East, most of it shipped through the Strait of Hormuz. But as the situation escalated into a closure of the Strait of Hormuz, oil became severely scarce in the market, forcing some refineries to cut refining capacity, while governments in some countries had to ration fuel allocations and return to reviewing their energy security strategies.
BRENT · Supply · Positive Strait of Hormuz closure and disrupted Gulf oil supplies tighten global crude availability, supporting Brent prices.
WTI · Supply · Positive War-driven closure of the Strait of Hormuz has made oil severely scarce, disrupting supply and supporting WTI prices.

Trump Bought Up to $5M in SpaceX Bonds Two Days Before Signing Space Policy

President Donald Trump purchased between $1M and $5M in SpaceX bonds on August 18, two days before signing a policy aimed at expanding commercial space transportation in the U.S., according to a financial disclosure released Thursday. The bonds are senior unsecured notes carrying a 5.35% interest rate and maturing in July 2031. The August 20 National Space Transportation Policy aims to support more than 1,000 U.S. launches and reentries annually by 2030 by accelerating permitting and expanding commercial access to federal launch facilities. SpaceX, founded by Elon Musk, is a major NASA launch provider and U.S. government contractor, and the timing of the purchase does not establish whether Trump knew about the policy in advance. Trump's August disclosure covered 517 securities transactions, including a purchase of between $5M and $25M in Meta Platforms shares on August 21, and the trades came weeks before Trump hosted Musk, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, and other AI leaders at a White House summit on September 29. Richard Painter, a former White House ethics lawyer under President George W. Bush, told CNN there is a conflict of interest, while White House spokesperson Davis Ingle said Trump's stock and bond portfolio is independently managed by third-party financial institutions in discretionary accounts invested through computer-based model portfolios that automatically replicate recognized indexes such as the Schwab 1000.

Government reports progress on multiple fronts in 10th round of Thailand-EU FTA talks, pushes ahead with Thailand-UAE CEPA

Ms. Lalida Periswiwatana, Deputy Government Spokesperson, disclosed that the government is pressing ahead with expanding trade and investment opportunities in European and Middle Eastern markets through the Thailand-European Union Free Trade Agreement, or Thailand-EU FTA, and by advancing the Thailand-United Arab Emirates Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement, or Thailand-UAE CEPA. Ms. Supajee Suthumpun, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce, disclosed that the 10th round of Thailand-EU FTA negotiations, held from 28 September to 6 October 2026 in Phuket province, saw significant progress on the text of many chapters, such as sanitary and phytosanitary measures, energy and raw materials, and rules of origin. Meanwhile, market access for goods, trade in services, investment, and government procurement made progress in the exchange of offers, though outstanding issues remain to be discussed further. Both sides continue to aim to conclude the negotiations within 2026. On the Middle East market, Ms. Supajee held talks with the UAE Minister of Foreign Trade on 23 September 2026 at the UAE Mission to the United Nations to follow up on progress in preparing the Thailand-UAE CEPA, and to discuss expanding investment cooperation and business linkages between the private sectors of the two countries. According to Ministry of Commerce data for 2025, the European Union is Thailand's 4th largest trading partner, while the United Arab Emirates is its 8th largest trading partner and its number one trading partner among the Gulf Cooperation Council, or GCC, countries and the Middle East. Thailand's key exports in both markets include gems and jewelry, air conditioners and parts, and computers, equipment, and parts. Ms. Lalida stressed that both agreements are still under negotiation, so operators should prepare in advance, but cannot yet use new tariff benefits under these agreements at this time. This applies especially to small and medium-sized enterprises, or SMEs, which should study product and destination-country information, check import standards and conditions, production costs, and prepare evidence of the origin of raw materials and production processes to support the use of benefits under the agreements once they take effect. They must also clearly distinguish between the progress of negotiations, signing, and the entry into force of an agreement, and should not use proposals on market access and rules of origin that are still under discussion as final conditions for calculating selling prices or concluding trade contracts until details are officially announced. At the same time, the push for the Thailand-UAE CEPA is an economic cooperation specifically between Thailand and the United Arab Emirates, and does not mean that Thai goods will receive trade benefits covering all countries in the Middle East or the Arab world.

Germany raises 2026 GDP forecast to 1.3% on stronger-than-expected exports and public spending

The German government has raised its forecast for economic growth in 2026 to 1.3% from a previous 0.5%, citing stronger-than-expected economic resilience despite pressure from soaring energy prices and geopolitical uncertainty. Katherina Reiche, Germany's Minister for Economic Affairs, said in the government's autumn economic forecast report that Germany's economy, the largest in Europe, is expected to recover steadily this year, driven by exports and public spending. Reiche said the German economy expanded better than expected in the first half of 2026, even as it was affected by conflict in the Middle East and higher energy costs. However, the recovery remains uneven, with private consumption likely to stay sluggish as inflation driven by energy prices has eroded households' purchasing power. At the same time, low capacity utilisation and geopolitical volatility continue to weigh on private investment. For the longer-term outlook, the government expects growth to slow to 1.1% in 2027 and to 0.6% in 2028. The government also warned that the economic trajectory will depend heavily on the situations in the Middle East and Ukraine. A lasting end to the conflicts would help push energy prices lower and accelerate the economic recovery, but if the situations drag on, they will inevitably add further pressure on businesses and households.
