Seagate Technology PLCToshiba's planned substantial HDD supply expansion stokes oversupply fears that sent Seagate shares down over 9%.
Seagate Technology shares sank just over 9% on Tuesday, ending at $805.63, down $81.46 on the session, amid a sector-wide decline in data-storage names. The selloff extended a week of heightened sensitivity around hard-disk-drive industry capacity, following an October 2 report that Toshiba was planning a substantial expansion of hard-drive supply, which sent Seagate shares down just over 10% that session. Alongside the supply worries, a report published Tuesday indicated Seagate was in talks to acquire TDK's hard-drive magnetic-heads unit and had reportedly submitted a higher offer than rival bidder Toshiba during the summer; magnetic heads are a critical component in HDD manufacturing. Among storage peers, Western Digital also fell sharply, dropping nearly 7%, while Micron and SanDisk posted smaller declines, even as large-cap indices closed modestly higher. Seagate's 52-week high stands at $1,145.00, roughly 42% above Tuesday's close, while its 52-week low of $209.00 is roughly 74% below it.
