AI-Abused Cyberattacks Surge in Japan and South Korea, Forcing Government and Corporate Response

Cyberattacks are mounting across Japan and South Korea, forcing governments and companies to respond urgently. In Japan, unauthorized access has surged broadly across industries, hitting financial firms such as Daiwa Securities and Sompo Japan, retailers including Bookoff Group Holdings and Lawson, the restaurant chain Yakiniku King, and car-sharing operator Times Mobility. The impact was especially severe at IDC Frontier, a SoftBank subsidiary in the cloud business, where the attack left 495 contracted companies and local governments unable to view their websites or exposed their data. In South Korea, nine banks and large churches suffered cyberattacks that may have used AI tools, and U.S. cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike said a 26-year-old suspect living in China most likely could not have carried out the attack without AI assistance. According to TrendAI, cybersecurity incidents involving organizations based in Japan from January through September this year have already surpassed the total for all of last year, with 86 cases in September, up about 18 percent from August and about 37 percent from July. Experts warn that the spread of AI is making it easier even for criminals without advanced skills to launch attacks, making cybercrime cheaper and more accessible.

Heads of Japan's five major financial groups welcome rising rates but flag fiscal concerns

The heads of five major financial institutions, including Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group, attended a symposium hosted by Nikkei Inc. on the 8th, expressing positive views on rising domestic interest rates while also pointing out that the moves contain elements of a "bad rate rise" driven by fiscal concerns. Junichi Hanzawa, president of Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, said that if the rise in rates reflects the economy's underlying strength and higher inflation, it should be viewed positively as part of economic normalization, while also acknowledging that a rise in risk premiums stemming from the market's view of fiscal sustainability is partly reflected. SMFG president Toru Nakashima likewise assessed the current rate rise as "largely the result of a good increase in rates," but said a certain number of investors are concerned about Japan's fiscal health, and noted that risks surrounding the situation in the Middle East are also partly priced into rates. Mizuho Financial Group president Masahiro Kihara cited as a risk the competition for long-term funding amid fiscal expansion by governments and strong investment demand centered on artificial intelligence and data centers, saying he sees an environment in which long-term rates could easily spike and is watching the impact on lower-rated companies. Views on the stock market were largely bullish: Nomura Holdings president Kentaro Okuda expects the Nikkei average to reach around 75,000 yen by year-end and sees a move above 80,000 yen by the end of 2027, while Daiwa Securities Group president Akihiko Ogino mentioned the possibility of 80,000 yen at year-end, 88,000 yen at the end of 2027, and 300,000 yen by 2045.

Mizuho Securities joins SpaceX IPO as lead underwriter, adding 1,000 wealthy clients' accounts

Mizuho Securities President Yoshiro Hamamoto has laid out a strategy centered on "connecting" companies and investors, doing what major U.S. and Japanese firms cannot. In SpaceX's June 2026 listing, which raised 85.7 billion dollars, or about 14 trillion yen, in the largest IPO ever, Mizuho Securities' U.S. unit was the only Japanese brokerage to join the lead underwriter group, selling about 80 percent of the roughly 350 billion yen raised in Japan, with Rakuten Securities and SBI Securities selling the rest. The effort added about 1,000 new wealthy clients' accounts, and mass-retail customer accounts also grew. Hamamoto said that unless the firm makes substantive proposals to customers whose attention was drawn to Mizuho Securities by handling SpaceX shares, it will be a waste of a treasure, and that this IPO is only the entry point, expressing his eagerness to expand the number of accounts further. Through its alliance with Rakuten Securities, Mizuho Securities handles contact with the mass market, and as of fiscal 2026 their combined assets under custody stand at 121.7 trillion yen, with Mizuho Securities at 63.0 trillion yen and Rakuten Securities at 58.7 trillion yen, surpassing Daiwa Securities' 116 trillion yen, and by fiscal 2030 the two are projected to reach 212.2 trillion yen combined, chasing Nomura.

Sumitomo Mitsui Banking and Eight Other Firms Pilot Simultaneous Settlement of Digital Securities Using Stablecoins

Sumitomo Mitsui Banking and eight other companies announced on October 6 that they have completed the second phase of "Project Trinity," a proof-of-concept experiment to settle digital securities using stablecoins. The second-phase trials ran from April to September 2026 between Daiwa Securities and SBI Securities, using security tokens issued by SBI VC Trade and trust-type stablecoins issued by Sumitomo Mitsui Banking for the purpose of this verification. Assuming trading on the Osaka Digital Exchange's security token trading market "START," two transactions were settled. Progmat handled the issuance and management infrastructure for the security tokens, while Progmat and Datachain provided the technology linking security tokens and stablecoins on different blockchains. In the trials, in addition to purchasing and redeeming stablecoins and ordinary settlement, the participants also tested responses for cases where stablecoins were insufficient or transaction details did not match. The companies said the results met expectations within the anticipated scope, and explained that they have set a near-term goal of delivery-versus-payment settlement at T+2, two business days after execution, and have confirmed to a certain degree that this is achievable.

Yamagata Bank and Daiwa Securities Sign Alliance on Securities Services

The Yamagata Bank, Ltd. and Daiwa Securities Co. Ltd. agreed on 1 October 2026 to a memorandum of understanding for a comprehensive business alliance covering the integration of securities accounts, expanded intermediary services, and advanced consulting capabilities for customers in Yamagata Prefecture and nearby regions. Under the plan, Daiwa Securities will transfer and integrate most local securities accounts while seconding specialists into Yamagata Bank, a move that could reshape how full-service investment and inheritance advice is delivered in the region. The impact will depend on the eventual 2027 agreement and 2028 roll out, with the alliance potentially acting as a short term catalyst if investors factor in higher fee income, stickier customer relationships, or better use of Daiwa's product shelf. At the same time, transferring most securities accounts and relying on an intermediary model introduces execution and relationship risks alongside existing concerns about low return on equity, volatile shares and an inexperienced board. A single Simply Wall St Community fair value estimate for Yamagata Bank clusters at ¥1,348.60 per share, well below the current market price.

Borrowing Demand Remains Strong Even at 3% Interest Rates, Companies Focus on Cost Control and Buyer Development

With the yield on new 10-year government bonds, a benchmark for long-term interest rates, hovering near 3%, corporate funding costs are rising, but demand for funds for capital investment and M&A remains strong. Companies are struggling to control costs by shortening the maturity of corporate bonds, while also rushing to develop overseas and individual investors. Against the backdrop of rising government bond yields, there is a clear trend of corporate bonds with higher spreads attracting demand, and Sumitomo Forestry's public hybrid bond of approximately 250 billion yen drew orders of over 700 billion yen, nearly three times the issue amount. According to the Ministry of Finance's Financial Statements Statistics of Corporations, capital investment in the April-June 2026 quarter increased 1.6% year-on-year to over 13 trillion yen across all industries, and the Bank of Japan's June Tankan survey showed that large enterprises' fiscal 2026 capital investment plans rose 11.5% year-on-year. Meanwhile, regional banks, shinkin banks, and credit cooperatives, which were major buyers, have shifted to issuing their own bonds, and pension funds and asset management companies are increasing their presence. Companies that cannot secure the necessary funds from domestic institutional investors alone are expanding their funding sources to overseas and individual investors, with SoftBank Group issuing individual bonds worth 1 trillion yen domestically. Market prices in 82% chance of BOJ rate hike in September

The market has raised the probability that the Bank of Japan will raise interest rates at its September 18 meeting to 82%, up from just 23% before the July meeting. Senior BOJ officials are scheduled to deliver several speeches before the meeting, which will be watched for signals supporting or opposing this rate hike. Deputy Governor Ryozo Himino is due to speak this Thursday, while Governor Kazuo Ueda may comment after the G20 meeting in the United States next week. BOJ board members Hajime Takata and Kazuyuki Masu will speak on September 2 and September 10 respectively. Kento Minami, senior economist at Daiwa Securities, believes the BOJ may not explicitly say it will raise rates, but will emphasize upside inflation risks, which the market will interpret as opening the door for a rate hike next month. A key support comes from the United States and Japan jointly intervening in currency markets in late July for the first time since 1998, helping pull the yen back from levels near 160 yen per dollar. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said monetary policy needs to follow through on the currency intervention measures, and expressed confidence that the BOJ will take necessary action.

Japanese companies' share buyback authorizations reach about 12.7 trillion yen from April to August, fastest pace on record

Share buyback authorizations by Japanese companies are increasing at the fastest pace on record, reaching about 12.7 trillion yen from April 2026 through August 12. According to data from Daiwa Securities, TOPIX constituents set buyback authorizations of 10.5 trillion yen from April through the end of August 2025, and this fiscal year the figure reached 12.7 trillion yen as of August 12, after the earnings season passed its peak. Although the periods differ and cannot be compared directly, the amount already exceeds the previous year's full-year result by more than 2 trillion yen. Behind this are a stronger stance on shareholder returns and the revised Corporate Governance Code published by the Tokyo Stock Exchange and the Financial Services Agency on July 21, which includes language requiring boards of directors to continuously review the effective use of cash, deposits, and financial assets. Daisuke Hashizume of Daiwa Securities pointed out that buyback announcements are a sign of confidence in companies' earnings outlooks, while Jun Ishikane of Mitsubishi UFJ Asset Management said they tend to be well received by overseas investors and can be expected to attract fund inflows. With the TOPIX recently setting record highs day after day, the overall tone of Japanese equities is firm, and the spread of buybacks is likely to be seen as a factor supporting share prices.

Analysts say Japanese stock earnings still unaffected as long as yen stays above 150 per dollar

Analysts assess that Japanese corporate earnings have not yet been significantly impacted by the stronger yen, as long as the currency does not breach the 150 yen per dollar level. The Topix index fell 1.1 percent in Monday trading after Japan and the United States jointly intervened in the currency market, but the yen is still trading above 151.49 per dollar, which is the average exchange rate used by more than 800 Japanese companies as an assumption in their earnings forecasts, according to a Bank of Japan survey. Yuko Tsuboi, chief strategist at Daiwa Securities, said the risk of downward earnings revisions remains small unless the yen strengthens further to 150 per dollar or below. Meanwhile, Naoki Fujiwara, senior fund manager at Shinkin Asset Management, views that the Japanese stock market did not rise solely because of a weak yen, so as long as the exchange rate stays close to corporate assumptions, it is unlikely to be a factor pressuring company profits. Maki Sawada, strategist at Nomura Securities, believes that earnings of Japanese exporters are still on a growth trend this year, and stocks sold off on yen strength concerns could see buying interest return if results come in stronger than market expectations.

Limited to inter-dealer transactions with overseas securities firms, the test verified a configuration enabling delivery-versus-payment settlement using security tokens and the stablecoin USDC on the public blockchain Ethereum. Management for domestic investors is conducted on the consortium-based platform ibet for Fin, with the target security tokens mirrored onto Ethereum only when transacting with overseas securities firms. The proof-of-concept confirmed the potential to leverage a public blockchain while maintaining domestic rights management, and also addressed issues such as gas fee management, private key management, and legal and tax considerations. SBI Securities and Daiwa Securities conducted risk assessments of the platform's safety and reported to self-regulatory organizations.

Regarding the comprehensive business alliance with Akita Bank, he said the goal of boosting combined ordinary profit by 3.04 billion yen over the five-year period through fiscal 2026 is expected to be achieved, and expressed eagerness to strengthen collaboration.
