J.P. Morgan names Bouygues, Orange, KPN and BT as best positioned European telcos against agentic AI threat

J.P. Morgan has named Bouygues, Orange, KPN and BT as the European telecom operators best positioned to withstand the threat from agentic AI agents targeting customer bills. The broker said the threat stems from Muse and Instinct, two agentic AI agents launched in early September that, after going viral, were upgraded in mid-September to communicate directly with customers' utility, insurance and telecom providers to negotiate lower bills. Exposed sectors in the US are already down 13-25%, while Europe is faring far better, and J.P. Morgan notes that fears are being rapidly discounted. The broker argues that market structure, rather than front-book and back-book pricing comparisons, is a far better guide to exposure, placing Bouygues, Orange, KPN and BT at the top of the sector, with Telefonica, DT, Sunrise and Sweden weaker placed. J.P. Morgan urges telcos to accelerate in-market consolidation to crowd out the threat, considers the sector's distressed high-yield players ill-equipped to withstand any AI-led pricing pressure, and appeals to authorities to level the playing field by embracing progressive sector deregulation.

Bouygues posted a very solid first-half 2026 performance with group net profit surging to 287 million euros, up 114 million euros year-on-year, despite a second consecutive year of an exceptional surtax on large French companies. Group revenue reached 26.3 billion euros, down 1.3 percent at constant exchange rates, while current operating profit from activities rose to 829 million euros, a 33 million euro increase.
