Every time you open an app, stream a movie, or ask AI a question, behind it sits an army of servers, buildings the size of a city, undersea fiber, and enormous amounts of electricity. This is the "plumbing and power" of the digital age — and right now the whole world is pouring money into building it, at a scale where global data-center investment is set to top $1 trillion a year. This lesson is the map that strings the 9 categories together — from the power and land at the base, up to the software we use — showing how they stack into "layers," where the money piles up, and why the real bottleneck has become "electricity" (each category has its own deep-dive chapter).
AI Cloud Demand Accelerates, but Financing Strains and Regulatory Risks Mount
▲
AI cloud demand accelerates, with record backlogs and new deals Goldman expects hyperscaler cloud revenue growth to accelerate to 55% in Q3, while Barclays sees up to $30B upside to Nvidia's hyperscaler revenue. Anthropic's IPO filing reveals $518B in cloud commitments, including $110B owed to AWS, locking in years of demand. Snowflake raised guidance, and Amazon's AWS AI run rate topped $25B.
This is the core positive force: demand is accelerating and locking in future revenue, directly lifting the theme.
EU set to regulate AWS and Azure under Digital Markets Act EU regulators are preparing to designate AWS and Microsoft Azure under the Digital Markets Act, which could force new interoperability requirements and protections against customer lock-ins. This adds regulatory risk and potential compliance costs for the two largest cloud providers, a headwind for the theme.
This is a new regulatory threat that could constrain the dominant cloud providers and alter competitive dynamics.
Rising debt and financing costs pressure AI infrastructure buildout Oracle's long-term debt has doubled to over $160B, and it is in talks with Apollo and Goldman to fund chips via a separate entity. Amazon seeks to offload $8B of Nvidia chips to investors. These moves highlight the strain on balance sheets from massive AI capex, a risk for the theme.
This shows the financial strain from the buildout, a key counterweight to the positive demand story.
Competition intensifies as Meta enters enterprise software Meta launched an enterprise platform, triggering a selloff in software stocks like ServiceNow, MongoDB, and Salesforce. While this could pressure some cloud software firms, it also signals growing AI adoption and competition, with uncertain net impact on the broader cloud infrastructure theme.
This is a new competitive dynamic that could reshape the software layer of the cloud theme, with both risks and opportunities.
Amazon Weighs $8 Billion Outside Financing for Nvidia Chips
Amazon.com is reportedly considering moving roughly $8 billion of Nvidia Grace Blackwell chips into a special-purpose vehicle financed by outside investors and then leasing the hardware back, a structure that would make part of its AI buildout more asset-light as capital spending is expected to reach $220 billion this year. AWS revenue rose 37% to $42.2 billion in the second quarter, its fastest growth in more than four years, and contract backlog reached $496 billion, while CEO Andy Jassy said the company still lacks enough capacity to meet demand. Trailing-12-month free cash flow swung to negative $7.6 billion from positive $18.2 billion a year earlier as infrastructure spending accelerated. Amazon trades at 23.64 times forward earnings, and Tigress Financial recently raised its target to $385 from $315, arguing earnings from the investment cycle are approaching an inflection point where they grow faster than operating capital. The proposal also raises the question of residual chip value, since Grace Blackwell will eventually be superseded by Vera Rubin while Amazon assumes semiconductor generations remain useful for at least five years.

Zenity Labs disclosed critical AWS Bedrock AgentCore security flaws affecting all agents in an account, and Amazon has since mitigated the issue. Researchers found that a single malicious prompt could expose internal data and cloud credentials before AWS patched the vulnerability. The disclosure comes as Amazon has recently cut nearly 1,000 jobs across several core units while continuing to hire heavily for AI-focused roles. The Bedrock AgentCore security exposure and the workforce cuts both bear on whether Amazon's heavy AI-focused capital spending translates into long-duration contracts and strong returns on invested capital rather than higher operational risk. Investors will be watching how AWS security and incident disclosures evolve over the next few quarters, along with any spike in customer churn or added compliance costs tied to the security and workforce changes.

Cloudflare acquires Deno to strengthen Workers platform
Cloudflare announced Friday that it is acquiring Deno, the startup behind the programming runtime of the same name. According to Cloudflare's Kenton Varda, principal engineer for Cloudflare Workers, the company will use the acquisition to improve its Workers programming model and platform, which lets customers build and run software on Cloudflare's network. Deno, co-founded by Bert Belder and Node.js creator Ryan Dahl, recently launched celld, an open source implementation of Workers that Varda said delighted the Cloudflare team. Varda pushed back on what he called a popular theory that Cloudflare made Workers work differently from other cloud platforms to create lock-in, saying the company believes being open source and giving people an escape hatch is good business. Dahl wrote that his team is joining Cloudflare to make the Workers programming model a mainstream way to build servers. The financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed, and Deno had raised a total of $26 million, including a Series A led by Sequoia.
Google Launches Prototype TPU Satellite Aboard SpaceX Mission
Alphabet Inc. has launched a prototype Tensor Processing Unit satellite aboard SpaceX's Transporter-18 mission on October 1, 2026, in partnership with Planet, marking its first concrete step toward putting data centers in orbit. The test, part of Google's Project Suncatcher, will examine how its TPUs handle launch stress, radiation, and extreme temperatures in low Earth orbit, with ground testing already showing Trillium TPUs can withstand radiation levels higher than those expected across a five-year mission. Heat management remains a key challenge because conventional air cooling does not work in a vacuum, prompting Google to evaluate heat pipes and radiators, and a two-satellite test is planned for 2027. Google emphasized the current mission is intended to collect engineering data rather than demonstrate a commercial system. SpaceX could benefit from additional orbital AI experiments if hyperscalers continue choosing its launch services, even as its valuation of over $2 trillion at about 45 times forward sales rests on management's own targets, including Elon Musk's expectation of a $100 billion annual revenue run rate by December and a $1 trillion revenue target moved up to 2030.

AWS CEO Matt Garman Rejects AI Bubble Fears as Ray Dalio Warns Boom Near Breaking Point
Matt Garman, CEO of Amazon.com Inc.'s AWS, said concerns over an AI spending bubble are overstated, telling a16z's podcast with Raghu Raghuram on Thursday that Amazon does not rely on one customer for most AWS capacity and that "we feel really good about the spend we're making now." Garman said demand is concentrated in production workloads such as computing, storage and AI inference, and that a diversified approach means not all capacity is bundled up in one customer, comparing the market to venture capital where failed startups can be offset by successful investments. His comments come as AWS highlights efforts to make AI more affordable, and as Amazon is reportedly in talks to transfer about $8 billion worth of Nvidia Corp.'s Grace Blackwell AI chips to an investor-backed special-purpose vehicle that could raise funds through debt issuance while Amazon leases the chips back. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy raised the company's 2026 capital expenditure forecast by $20 billion to $220 billion in July, citing rising memory chip prices and strong demand for AI and AWS infrastructure. Separately, billionaire investor Ray Dalio warned that rising AI-related borrowing, higher interest rates and pressure to turn paper wealth into cash could bring the AI bubble closer to bursting, calling the boom a "classic bubble" and comparing the current AI rally to the late 1920s.

Nscale Removed Bytedance References Before $35bn Wall Street Listing
British AI data centre company Nscale stripped references to its relationship with Chinese technology giant Bytedance from official filings ahead of a planned $35bn public listing on Wall Street. Nscale, which counts Sir Nick Clegg and former Meta executive Sheryl Sandberg as directors and is backed by Nvidia, initially disclosed the Bytedance deal in a confidential document submitted to US regulators earlier this year, including a February filing stating that Bytedance was its largest customer for the year ended December 31, 2025. That filing was for DSNS Holdings, a holding company later renamed Nscale, and reported that Bytedance was the primary customer at a Norwegian data centre where it rents access to powerful Nvidia AI chips. References to Bytedance were removed from all of Nscale's later draft submissions and from its final 192-page prospectus published in September, which makes no mention of the company; the name is understood to have been removed for commercial confidentiality reasons, and Bytedance is no longer Nscale's biggest customer after the company signed major deals with Microsoft and Anthropic. The disclosures could draw fresh scrutiny, as US officials have sought to block China from accessing Nvidia's most powerful AI chips on national security grounds, and Nscale's February filing warned that the proposed Remote Access Security Act could restrict its ability to provide remote access to such customers. Nscale declined to comment, and Bytedance was contacted for comment.

Software stocks rally 21% as AI SaaSpocalypse fears fade
Software stocks have rallied sharply back after the so-called AI SaaSpocalypse narrative hammered the sector, with the broader software group and the IGV index up 21% since the end of June relative to a 4% gain in the broader S&P 500, according to JPMorgan strategist Samik Chatterjee. Top performers include Paycom, DocuSign, Workday, Salesforce, Cloudflare, Twilio, and Microsoft. Chatterjee attributed part of the rally to a valuation multiple rerating across infrastructure and application software companies, and said renewed belief in the group could be sustained into year-end as investors digest third quarter earnings. Heading into third quarter earnings, he expects broader share price momentum to continue with infrastructure software companies leading on AI-led tailwinds driving robust beats on both top-line and earnings, though potentially only in line on gross margins. He added that application software companies should also participate on raises to full-year guides, aided by building momentum in AI monetization as incremental revenue on top of core businesses.

The payment is sizeable yet small next to the US$167.7b telecom group, which is already spending heavily on fiber and 5G, and the bigger issue for investors is execution on the US$6b targeted copper cost reductions and the large network build. The satellite venture is aimed at filling dead zones that fiber and towers do not reach, while the GIP and CPP Investments fiber venture pushes deeper high speed access in 16 states. The clearest test ahead is whether AT&T closes the fiber JV in the first half of 2027 as planned and starts reporting its share of JV earnings without consolidating the results, alongside progress toward the more than 60 million fiber locations target by 2030.
Gorilla Technology Signs First U.S. Data Center LOI, Targets 100 MW Portfolio

Quantum QMCO Stock Up 191% in Three Months on Strong Q1 Results
Quantum Corporation's QMCO shares have surged 191.2% over the past three months, far outpacing the Zacks Computer & Technology sector's 5.2% gain and the Zacks Computer-Storage Devices industry's 19.7% decline, while the S&P 500 rose 3.1%. The company reported better-than-expected first-quarter fiscal 2027 results, with revenue up 25.7% year over year to $80.8 million, above the high end of management's guidance of $75 million, plus or minus $2 million, and gross margin improving to 39.3%, its highest level in five quarters. Non-GAAP operating expenses fell 16% year over year to $25.1 million, non-GAAP net income came in at $4 million, or 18 cents per share, against a loss of $14.5 million a year earlier, and adjusted EBITDA reached $8 million versus a loss of $6.5 million. Quantum eliminated all outstanding debt, cutting total debt from $144.8 million at the end of fiscal 2026 to zero as of June 30, 2026, after a private placement raised approximately $94.6 million in net proceeds, of which $56.8 million went to debt repayment, while cash, cash equivalents and restricted cash rose to $54.6 million from $16.2 million. For the second quarter of fiscal 2027, Quantum expects revenue of $82 million, plus or minus $2 million, about 31% year-over-year growth at the midpoint, but projects adjusted EBITDA of $6 million, plus or minus $1 million, below the first quarter's $8 million, as supply constraints on tape drives and certain disk drives continue to limit order fulfillment. QMCO trades at a forward 12-month price/sales ratio of 3.09 versus the industry's 2.91 and currently carries a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy).

OpenAI Revenue Gap Is Accounting, Not Demand, as AI Stocks Slide
OpenAI's annualized revenue is running at roughly $50 billion, about $20 billion below the $68 billion figure that circulated in September after multiple outlets reported it as fact, and the gap is a measurement difference rather than a demand shortfall. The $68 billion figure came from a September 29 report traced to Axios and Reuters that appears to have used a gross revenue methodology counting the full dollar value flowing through OpenAI's cloud partnerships, including the portion passed through to infrastructure partners like Microsoft Azure, while OpenAI reports net revenue excluding those pass-through costs. On October 8, the Financial Times reported that OpenAI had told investors its annualized revenue was running at approximately $50 billion at the end of September, a figure CNBC confirmed the same day, with OpenAI's own disclosures to investors showing 77% total revenue growth and 107% enterprise revenue growth in Q3. The market did not wait for methodology clarification: Oracle fell 5%, with its $300 billion five-year cloud commitment to OpenAI representing roughly 45% of remaining performance obligations, Nvidia dropped 2.94% to $230.48, CoreWeave fell 8% amid insider selling reports and $3 billion in convertible debt overhang, and the Nasdaq 100 shed 300 points in thirty minutes on Thursday afternoon. Analyst consensus has converged on the word overblown, since the methodology difference does not change the fundamental demand trajectory, but the episode highlights how concentrated AI infrastructure valuations remain on a narrow set of demand assumptions from a small number of very large buyers.
ORCL · Capital · Negative Oracle fell 5% as its $300 billion five-year OpenAI cloud commitment equals roughly 45% of remaining performance obligations, tying it to the disputed revenue figure.
CRWV · Capital · Negative CoreWeave fell 8% amid insider selling reports and $3 billion in convertible debt overhang.
NVDA · Capital · Negative Nvidia dropped 2.94% to $230.48 as the OpenAI revenue-gap episode pressured AI infrastructure valuations.
OpenAI Revenue Reports and Delta Earnings in Focus for Markets
OpenAI expects to reach or exceed $70 billion in annualized revenue by the end of the year, according to a Bloomberg News report, after a Financial Times report said its annualized revenue stood at about $50 billion at the end of September, short of the $70 billion previously signaled. The growth is expected to be driven chiefly by its enterprise business, Bloomberg said, though a path to profitability remained unclear, with recent reports indicating the company was still on track to slip to a full-year loss and has projected it will burn $280 billion by 2030. Delta Air Lines is due to report third-quarter results before the opening bell, with Bloomberg consensus estimates pointing to adjusted revenue of $17.66 billion and adjusted per-share income of $1.82, as the carrier grapples with an uptick in fuel costs and has predicted its fuel bill will be roughly $4 billion higher this year compared to the prior year. The University of Michigan's October consumer sentiment index is tipped to edge down to a reading of 47.5 from a four-month low of 48.1 in September. U.S. mobile tower stocks rose in extended hours trading after SpaceX agreed to buy a nationwide block of low-band spectrum from private equity firm Grain Management for about $8 billion in cash, a deal Bernstein said keeps alive the possibility that the satellite company builds a ground network; American Tower, Crown Castle, and SBA Communications rose between 3% and 4.5% after-hours.

The firm cited solid execution across multiple business segments and accelerating growth in artificial intelligence cloud services. Jefferies expects AI Cloud and Compute services revenue to grow over 50% year-over-year to RMB60.5 billion in the September quarter, with segment margin improving quarter-over-quarter to 12.3%, and forecasts cloud revenue to grow over 50% year-over-year in fiscal year 2028. Total revenue is estimated to grow 9.6% year-over-year, while cloud segment profit is expected to offset losses in AI Lab and Applications in the December quarter. On ecommerce, the gap between gross and net China marketplace revenue is narrowing and Quick Commerce losses are lower in September than in the June quarter.
Auditoria.AI Expands Cash Cycle Automation for Workday Finance Users
Auditoria.AI, a partner of Workday, announced broader autonomous Cash Cycle solutions for Workday finance users, adding intelligent automation tools and finance-led governance features designed to tighten controls and oversight inside Workday-based finance workflows. The company also reported new client wins and entry into additional international markets for its Workday-focused automation platform. The expansion plugs Auditoria.AI deeper into Workday Financial Management, turning accounts payable and receivable into more automated, agent-driven workflows that keep governance in finance's hands and keep more complex cash cycle activity inside Workday rather than in side systems. Workday's narrative already leans on strong AI adoption, with roughly US$600m in AI ARR and over 25% of new and expansion ACV coming from AI-driven products, plus non-GAAP operating margins above 31%. The key question remaining is how quickly customers move to Flex Credits for AI agents and Workday Data Cloud, which is central to how these workloads turn into reported subscription revenue and cash flow.

SpaceX Buys Spectrum for $8 Billion, Lifting US Tower Stocks
SpaceX agreed to buy a nationwide block of low-band spectrum for about $8 billion in cash from private equity firm Grain Management, a deal that sent U.S. cell tower stocks higher in aftermarket trade on Thursday. American Tower Corp, Crown Castle International Corp, and SBA Communications Corp, three of the country's largest phone tower operators, rose between 3% and 4.5% in afterhours trade. Bernstein analysts called the move positive for tower operators, saying it keeps the terrestrial network build option very much alive, though they noted that buying spectrum is not a commitment to build more towers. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said the spectrum is the last critical piece of the spectrum puzzle needed for SpaceX to provide complete phone coverage in America, and the acquisition is aimed at improving its Starlink satellite-to-cellular service by letting its signal pass through obstacles. Shares of major American telecommunications providers fell on the prospect of more competition from Starlink, with AT&T Inc, Verizon Communications Inc, and T-Mobile US Inc sliding between 5% and 7% in aftermarket trade, while SpaceX shares rose 2.3%.
Adobe Suspended From US Permanent Labor Certification Program
Adobe has been suspended from the US Permanent Labor Certification Program as federal officials review alleged visa system abuse. The US Department of Labor action affects Adobe's access to a key channel for sponsoring employment based green cards for workers. Federal investigations are focused on whether Adobe misused elements of the visa sponsorship process within the PERM framework. Adobe operates as a global software producer that underpins creative tools, digital media workflows, and document management, so any restriction on how it hires specialized engineers and product talent can affect how it competes in the broader US technology sector. The PERM suspension leans against the catalyst that hinges on converting a huge free user base into paying customers, because that push relies on specialised product and AI talent that Adobe often recruits globally.

AWS Transform now enables migration of block storage data for NetApp Inc.'s unified data storage operating system, NetApp ONTAP, directly to Amazon FSx, allowing such migrations to run in the same wave as compute and network. NetApp executive Pravjit Tiwana said cloud migration projects often run longer and cost more than planned because customers must move applications, servers, networking, and storage separately, and that the combined offering simplifies the process, lowers migration risk, and helps customers reach AWS faster without changing how their applications operate. The integration broadens NetApp's total addressable market beyond its existing users and turns AWS migration projects into new cloud storage channels, though it also increases NetApp's reliance on AWS for distribution and adoption of this particular cloud service, exposing it to AWS pricing decisions and competing storage offerings. NetApp has delivered around 102% year-to-date return in 2026, more than fivefold the return of the broader S&P 500, with a market capitalization of approximately $45.39 billion, a trailing P/E of approximately 33.3x and a forward P/E of 23.7x. As per 13F filing data for Q2 2026, a total of 47 hedge funds held positions in the stock compared to 38 by the end of the first quarter, and BlackRock is the largest institutional investor with 18.9 million shares, representing 9.62% of outstanding shares.

Oracle stock falls as AI chip financing talks with Apollo and Goldman surface
Oracle stock fell Thursday after a Wall Street Journal report said the cloud provider is preparing to tap debt markets to fund its AI infrastructure build-out. Oracle is reportedly in talks with Apollo and Goldman Sachs to arrange financing, with a deal possible as soon as this year in which investors would fund a separate company that buys the chips and leases them to Oracle over time. Broadcom and SpaceX were also cited by the Journal as pursuing similar arrangements. Oracle's capital spending reached $28.5 billion in the June-to-August quarter, up from $2.3 billion two years earlier, and its long-term debt has nearly doubled to more than $160 billion over the past two years, making it the fifth-largest borrower in the US corporate bond market. Adding pressure, OpenAI's annualized revenue is reportedly $20 billion short of prior estimates; OpenAI is one of Oracle's biggest cloud customers, with a contract backlog of $664 billion last quarter.
