Google locks in nuclear power and expands Gemini enterprise AI
▲
Google secures long-term nuclear power for AI data centers Google signed a 20-year deal with Constellation Energy for 890 MW of new nuclear power, plus a 15-year agreement for 2,700 MW more. It also signed a 22-year, 507 MW nuclear deal in Finland. Locking in reliable, carbon-free electricity reduces the risk that power shortages slow its AI buildout, supporting the stock.
This is the period's biggest new event, directly addressing a key constraint on Alphabet's AI growth.
Gemini expands deeper into enterprise AI workflows Google launched a new Gemini agent with 8 million paid enterprise seats across 4,200 companies, and pushed Gemini deeper into enterprise workflows with its Agent Development Kit. This shows Google is turning AI investment into real business adoption and revenue, which supports the stock.
This is a new product and adoption milestone that shows commercial traction for Alphabet's AI.
Waymo expands robotaxi reach and raises $5 billion Waymo now provides over 500,000 paid driverless rides weekly across 15 U.S. cities and raised $5 billion in its first private loan to fund expansion. This strengthens Alphabet's position in a market Goldman Sachs estimates could reach $415 billion by 2035, though Waymo remains unprofitable.
This is a new funding and expansion milestone for Alphabet's autonomous driving unit.
Cheap AI rivals and rising debt costs pressure Google Mistral launched a model priced well below Google's Gemini, and tech AI borrowing hit $500 billion, pushing up interest rates. Alphabet is named among companies raising debt hand over fist, which raises its future borrowing costs and pressures returns on its massive AI spending.
This is a new competitive and financial risk that could weigh on Alphabet's AI profitability.
Duke Energy Declares Dividends and Adds Data Center Safeguards With Tech Giants
Duke Energy declared quarterly cash dividends of US$1.085 per common share and US$359.375 per Series A preferred share, payable on December 16, 2026, to shareholders of record on November 13, 2026. The utility also reached agreements with Amazon, Google, Meta and Microsoft to broaden financial safeguards for North Carolina data centers, tying directly into its multi gigawatt data center pipeline. If regulators approve the framework, it would sit alongside existing electric service agreements as part of the story investors are watching around large load growth, capital spending and how much external funding Duke must raise to build out the grid and new generation. Duke's narrative projects $38.3 billion in revenue and $6.5 billion in earnings by 2029, requiring 5.3% yearly revenue growth and about a $1.3 billion earnings increase from $5.2 billion today. The company's rising capital needs could still collide with a period of persistently higher borrowing costs.

Alphabet's Waymo Lines Up $5 Billion Loan as Isomorphic Labs Targets $40 Billion to $50 Billion Valuation
Alphabet subsidiaries Waymo and Isomorphic Labs are pursuing major new funding moves in autonomous driving and AI drug discovery. Waymo has lined up US$5b in debt financing to support an international expansion of its robotaxi operations outside the US, while Isomorphic Labs is reported to be targeting a US$40b to US$50b valuation in its next capital raise focused on AI driven drug design. Waymo's US$5b term loan pushes more of Alphabet's AI buildout onto subsidiary-level borrowing rather than Alphabet's own cash, adding fixed obligations to a capital intensive project where timelines and regulatory paths are less clear than core Search or Cloud. Isomorphic Labs pursuing a US$40b to US$50b valuation highlights how far Alphabet is willing to stretch its AI ambitions beyond advertising and enterprise software, leaning into the reward side of future AI monetisation while magnifying the risk analysts flag around capital intensity and non cash earnings.

Bernstein: Consumer AI Agents Could Reshape Online Shopping, Payments
Consumer artificial intelligence agents could reshape online shopping, payments and financial services, but their success will depend on how established companies respond, according to Bernstein. The rapid growth of Muse, which can compare products and quotes, call businesses, send emails, fill forms, manage inboxes, cancel subscriptions and negotiate for users, has fuelled speculation about an "iPhone moment" for consumer AI, with OpenAI launching Dots and Google expected to improve Spark. Amazon blocked Muse within two weeks of launch, citing lack of prior notification, failure to identify itself, apparent collection of customer credentials and access to account pages and order histories, while others including Shopify, Walmart, Best Buy, Gap, Sephora, Wayfair, Dick's Sporting Goods, Ulta Beauty, Fanatics, Expedia and Instacart have partnered with Muse for shopping and checkout. Bernstein expects selective access rather than blanket blocking, and Muse is developing API connectors with retailers, although it currently mainly browses websites, fills forms and prepares orders for user confirmation. Cloudflare says AI-agent requests on its network rose over 1,700% in a year, while human traffic in heavily crawled retail and financial-services categories fell as much as 40%, and Bernstein sees payments as a potential winner, with more online transactions potentially benefiting Visa, Mastercard and processors Stripe, Adyen and Checkout.

Google Launches Prototype TPU Satellite Aboard SpaceX Mission
Alphabet Inc. has launched a prototype Tensor Processing Unit satellite aboard SpaceX's Transporter-18 mission on October 1, 2026, in partnership with Planet, marking its first concrete step toward putting data centers in orbit. The test, part of Google's Project Suncatcher, will examine how its TPUs handle launch stress, radiation, and extreme temperatures in low Earth orbit, with ground testing already showing Trillium TPUs can withstand radiation levels higher than those expected across a five-year mission. Heat management remains a key challenge because conventional air cooling does not work in a vacuum, prompting Google to evaluate heat pipes and radiators, and a two-satellite test is planned for 2027. Google emphasized the current mission is intended to collect engineering data rather than demonstrate a commercial system. SpaceX could benefit from additional orbital AI experiments if hyperscalers continue choosing its launch services, even as its valuation of over $2 trillion at about 45 times forward sales rests on management's own targets, including Elon Musk's expectation of a $100 billion annual revenue run rate by December and a $1 trillion revenue target moved up to 2030.

On September 23, three European Union financial regulators issued a warning that the development of increasingly powerful quantum computers could undermine the encryption systems used to secure blockchain and financial transactions. However, no quantum computer currently exists that is powerful enough to carry out such an attack in practice.
Constellation Energy Signs 3,590 MW Google Power Deal as Free Cash Flow Lags
Constellation Energy Corporation signed a 3,590 megawatt power agreement with Google, sending its shares up roughly 12% on October 6. The deal is unusually large for a company whose nuclear fleet cannot be replicated quickly, since licensing and building a nuclear plant in the United States takes more than a decade before a single megawatt is sold. Revenue grew 23.00% in the most recent quarter, but earnings fell 38.90% over the same period, and operating cash flow of $4.21 billion against capital expenditure of $3.90 billion left only $309.00 million in free cash flow to service $24.70 billion of debt. The stock traded at around $300 on October 7, down 0.27% on the day and 21.61% lower over twelve months, giving it a market value of $106.15 billion. Constellation was held by 73 hedge funds with a combined stake value of about $2.67 billion at the end of Q2 2026, down from 79 holders and roughly $3.38 billion in the previous quarter.

120 US lawmakers raise concerns over Google's purchase of Spirit Airlines data
A group of more than 120 US lawmakers expressed concern on the 8th over a plan by Google, a unit of Alphabet, to buy the internal data of bankrupt US budget carrier Spirit Airlines for 10 million dollars and use it to train artificial intelligence systems. The group, led by Senator Elizabeth Warren and Representative Stephen Horsford, noted that the sale would include 100 million emails, 500 million messages from Microsoft's business communication tool Teams, and other employee records, and urged Google to exclude employee information from the deal as much as possible. In a statement, the lawmakers argued that technological innovation should not come at the expense of workers' privacy or the confidentiality of information they are required to provide as a condition of employment. Google says it has no intention of buying personal information. Spirit halted operations in May, and in August Google won an auction for spreadsheet and calendar data as well as marketing, productivity, and business operations data as part of the shutdown and liquidation. A privacy expert recommended on the 5th that a US bankruptcy court judge approve the deal at a hearing on October 14, on the condition that the personal information of Spirit's 97 million customers be excluded.

Michael Burry Says Big Tech AI Spending Bets on 'Too Big to Fail' Oligopoly
Investor Michael Burry said Tuesday that big technology companies are spending wildly on data centers because their CEOs assume they will be granted an oligopoly that is too big to fail. In a post on X, Burry argued that this expectation is the only reason for the spending spree. JPMorgan estimates AI capital spending could rise from roughly $700 billion this year to $1 trillion next year, while Goldman Sachs expects the five biggest hyperscalers to issue about $250 billion in bonds this year and $400 billion in 2027. Separately, Space Exploration Technologies Corp. is reportedly seeking $40 billion in loans and debt, led by Apollo Global Management, to buy Nvidia Corp. chips, according to the Financial Times. Amazon.com Inc., Alphabet Inc., and Microsoft Corp. are on track to spend roughly $590 billion to $600 billion on capital expenditures this year, much of it on data centers and AI infrastructure, while Meta Platforms Inc. reportedly described some of its AI data centers to the IRS as pilot models to claim federal research tax credits, cutting its tax bill by $3.9 billion in 2025, according to The New York Times.

Global Equity Issuance Tops $1 Trillion as AI Megadeals Drive Record Pace
Global equity capital markets issuance has surpassed $1 trillion through the first nine months of 2026, putting the year on pace to rival the record 2021 period, according to Samuel Kerr, Head of Global Equity Capital Markets and Head of Mergermarket EMEA at ION. Speaking at a fireside chat at Nasdaq MarketSite on Oct. 5, Kerr said AI infrastructure is the dominant force behind the market, with mega-deals involving companies such as Alphabet and SpaceX driving the numbers and technology heavily concentrated at the top. Alphabet's return to the equity market reflects the scale of the AI investment cycle, he said, pointing to the company raising dilutive equity after roughly two decades of returning capital to shareholders as firms invest heavily in computing capacity and AI infrastructure. Kerr noted the U.S. IPO market is beginning to slow as borrowing costs rise, with higher sovereign-debt yields increasing companies' weighted average cost of capital and contributing to IPO postponements, while AI companies face additional liability concerns. He also highlighted emerging liability risks from AI models and suggested that slower AI spending could ultimately help hyperscalers improve profitability while reducing some risks.

The debt financing is Waymo's first and comes as the company accelerates its commercial expansion within existing cities while pushing into new markets in the United States, Europe, and Japan. Other lenders in the $5 billion loan include Capital Group, Loomis Sayles, T. Rowe Price, Apollo, Blue Owl, Diameter Capital Partners, Franklin Templeton, Fidelity Management & Research Company, HPS Investment Partners, and Oaktree, with Goldman Sachs serving as sole lead bookrunner. Until now, Waymo has relied on capital from its parent company and outside investors, including a $16 billion equity raise in February that pushed its valuation to $126 billion, a $5.6 billion Series C round in 2024, $2.5 billion in 2021, and $3.2 billion in 2020. Waymo now offers robotaxi services in 15 markets and is testing in London and Tokyo, though its growth has drawn scrutiny from regulators, including a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration investigation into illegal behavior around school buses and a National Transportation Safety Board probe after robotaxis were spotted illegally passing stopped school buses in at least two states.

Unity Software Upgraded to Outperform by Raymond James After Google Partnership
Raymond James upgraded Unity Software to Outperform and lifted its price target, sending shares up 2% in premarket trading on Thursday. Analyst Andrew Marok wrote that the firm's view had already become increasingly constructive following materially stronger-than-expected execution in Grow, where Vector growth and resulting operating leverage have moved ahead of the more gradual initiation. He said the partnership with Google meaningfully improves Unity's competitive position by pairing its creation and runtime technology with Google's AI and consumer distribution, addressing concerns about the durability of Unity's creator and content funnel as platforms like Roblox and generative AI tools lower barriers to game creation. Unity and Google announced the partnership on Wednesday for a new, integrated gaming platform coming later this year that will combine Google AI, the reach of Google's billion-user products, and Unity's game-building expertise. The two companies will also introduce an expanded creation experience called Unity Spark later this year, built for a new generation of creators.

Duke Energy Reaches Settlement to Shield Customers From Data Center Costs
Duke Energy and a group of stakeholders have reached an agreement that further protects existing customers from the costs of serving data centers and other large-load customers in North Carolina. The settlement, filed between Duke Energy Carolinas and Duke Energy Progress and the North Carolina Public Staff, also includes Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft, the Carolina Industrial Group for Fair Utility Rates and the U.S. Department of Defense. Under the terms, large-load customers must make nonrefundable upfront payments for grid facilities serving only them, such as a substation, and post upfront deposits and security guarantees for grid upgrades that serve all customers, such as transmission lines. New large-load customers, including new data centers, must also take service under a High Load Factor rate schedule. If approved by state regulators, the agreement would apply to all large-load customers of 50 megawatts or more with an 80% load factor that sign an electric service agreement in North Carolina after June 1, 2026, expanding on protections Duke Energy first required in 2024 for loads of 100 megawatts or more. The North Carolina Utilities Commission is expected to decide on the agreement by mid-November.

Google Contracts 890 MW of Nuclear Power from Constellation Energy
Google has contracted 3,590 megawatts of power from Constellation Energy in the largest US power grid, PJM Interconnection, with new nuclear energy accounting for about a quarter of that supply, or 890 megawatts. The 20-year power purchase agreement will fund more than $4.3 billion of new investments at 11 Constellation-owned nuclear units in Illinois, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey, boosting thermal and electrical efficiency, with electricity from the first upgraded plants delivered in 2028. The deal responds to PJM's "bring your own power" proposal, which followed a more than 11-fold increase in PJM capacity prices since 2024 and a power shortfall driven largely by data center expansion. It is the latest in a string of nuclear power announcements involving "Magnificent Seven" tech companies, following Constellation's 20-year agreements with Amazon for 690 megawatts from Calvert Cliffs and with Meta for 1,121 MW, and Google's contract to restart NextEra Energy's Iowa nuclear plant. Data center power consumption is projected to double globally by 2030, reaching around 945-980 terawatt-hours annually, and could account for up to 12% of total US electricity consumption by 2030.
Google-Fortum Nuclear Deal Makes Data Centers Finland's Top Power Buyer
Data centers have become the main financier of new Finnish power capacity, with Google's 507-megawatt agreement with Fortum at Loviisa marking Finland's first nuclear power purchase agreement. The 22-year tenor of that deal keeps a plant that supplies 10% of the country's electricity from retiring in 2030, and at 507 MW it is the largest single PPA ever signed in Finland, surpassing Amazon's 367 MW contract with OX2 for the Rajamäenkylä wind project. Data centers have overtaken manufacturing and industrial companies as the largest buyers of power in Finland, and the country is expected to become Europe's fifth-largest data center market by 2035, with installed capacity rising from 0.8 gigawatts in 2026 to 5 gigawatts in 2035 and data centers accounting for about 15% of national power consumption by 2030. Rystad Energy expects the next wave of Finnish offtake to pair wind and solar with battery energy storage systems to deliver a more baseload-like profile, while Finland has proposed replacing its first-come, first-served grid connection queue with a priority procedure that favors newly built, local and firm supply.
Reflection Launches Beam, a Free Open-Weight AI Model Challenging Anthropic and OpenAI
AI startup Reflection has announced Beam, an open-weight model it says is built for enterprise coding and agentic workloads, positioning it as a free rival to Anthropic and OpenAI. Reflection claims Beam's performance is comparable to the open-weight model GLM-5.2 but with greater efficiency, and says it will release the model's weights and documentation later this month. If Beam lives up to those claims, it could become the first U.S.-developed open-weight model to reach the top 10 of SWE-bench, a ranking of models on real-world coding tasks where eight of the top ten slots are currently held by closed-weight Claude, Gemini and GPT models and the only open-weight entrants, MiniMax M2.5 and GLM 5, are Chinese. The timing is especially difficult for Anthropic, which is planning an IPO in November, while OpenAI also intends to go public though without a definite date. Reflection is backed by Nvidia, and because OpenAI and Anthropic remain privately held, their shares cannot directly drag down the market, though Alphabet, Microsoft and Tesla could lose valuation if Beam outcompetes their offerings.

The US government, Meta Platforms, and Google parent Alphabet are joining the nonprofit research organization Biohub to build open datasets for training artificial intelligence models for biological research. Biohub announced the move on the 7th, and total investment in the effort is expected to reach $1.8 billion. Meta, Google's DeepMind, and drug-discovery startup Isomorphic Labs will jointly invest $300 million in Biohub. The US Department of Energy will contribute more than $500 million over the next five years for laboratory measurement, modeling, and computation, while the National Institutes of Health will provide more than $500 million in federal funding to coordinate datasets and repositories built to date, which Biohub will standardize for AI training. Biohub is run as a philanthropic effort by Meta Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan.
Pentagon Ends Anthropic Use as Google, xAI, OpenAI Win Federal AI Deals
The Pentagon's October 5 confirmation that it has ceased all Anthropic product usage formalizes a structural split in government AI procurement, with Google, xAI, and OpenAI signing contracts in its place. Anthropic's S-1 filing, reported by Reuters on September 28, outlines a valuation target of $2T+, double the $965B private valuation from May 2026, alongside a $42B net loss in 2025 that includes a $34B non-cash accounting charge from convertible financing revaluation and an operational loss of $8.06B, plus $518B in multi-year cloud and infrastructure obligations. Revenue reached approximately $4.6B in 2025, up 12x year-over-year, but the loss of the Pentagon's $200M contract signals exclusion from a federal procurement pipeline that is accelerating. OpenAI signed a General Services Administration OneGov deal on October 1 offering a $0 per-user-per-month license for ChatGPT, Codex, and API access to federal, state, local, and tribal agencies under a 27-month GSA agreement, covering approximately 23 million eligible public-sector employees. Google is building on existing cloud and Workspace government authorizations, with Alphabet's Q3 2026 earnings reported October 1 showing Google Cloud revenue at $15.2B, up 34% year-over-year, while xAI's Pentagon engagement and classified-network agreements signal a diversified supplier base that excludes companies unwilling to modify their models for military and intelligence applications. Anthropic is attempting to go public against the D.C. Circuit's 2-1 ruling on September 25 upholding the national security supply-chain risk designation under FASCSA Section 4713, a legal overhang that stands unless the Supreme Court takes the case or Congress amends FASCSA.
