For a decade this industry kept promising "glasses will replace the phone," and kept disappointing — bulky face-covering VR never really sold in the millions, and the $3,499 Apple Vision Pro sold only around 400,000 units before production was cut. But then the thing everyone overlooked exploded: Ray-Ban Meta glasses, which look like ordinary sunglasses, sold 7 million pairs in a single year. This lesson is the map that strings the 8 categories of Spatial Computing together — who does what, where the real value is, and why this time might not be another false dawn (each category has its own deep-dive chapter).
Meta's AI glasses push meets privacy backlash and Reality Labs losses
▲
Meta's Connect blitz: cheaper camera-free glasses, Muse AI everywhere, 100+ models Meta launched $349 camera-free Ray-Ban Meta Audio glasses and put its Muse AI assistant across its whole glasses lineup, with shopping tie-ups like Walmart and Best Buy. It plans over 100 glasses models by year-end, aiming at the 2 billion people who already wear glasses. This widens the buyer base and pushes the theme's demand story forward.
The period's biggest product push directly expands the smart-glasses market the theme depends on.
Meta's $1,299 VR glasses and XREAL AURA set a new spatial-computing price tier Meta showed a roughly 100-gram VR glasses device with 5K displays at $1,299, due spring 2027, and XREAL opened pre-orders for its Google- and Qualcomm-built AURA glasses from $1,279. Both are far lighter and cheaper than Apple's Vision Pro, which should pull more buyers into spatial computing.
New lightweight, lower-priced headsets are the clearest sign the hardware category is broadening.
Privacy backlash turns into a retail sales halt in Europe Dutch chain Hans Anders, with 776 stores, suspended sales of Meta's Ray-Ban glasses in the Netherlands and Belgium, the first retailer to do so, after regulators warned about filming people without consent. If other retailers follow, it could slow how widely smart glasses are accepted and sold.
A real counterweight: privacy rules and retailer pullback can cap adoption of camera glasses.
Reality Labs still burns billions while Meta funds a huge AI build-out Meta's Reality Labs lost $4.62 billion in the quarter on just $431 million of revenue, and free cash flow shrank to $784 million as capital spending hit $31 billion. Analysts still see Muse AI eventually adding up to $36 billion of sales by 2030, but today the hardware unit is a heavy drag on profits.
Shows the money behind the theme: big losses now versus long-term AI-glasses payoff.
Meta Q2 Revenue Jumps 28% to $60.80 Billion as Free Cash Flow Shrinks
Meta Platforms reported fiscal Q2 2026 revenue of $60.80 billion, up 28% year over year, while free cash flow fell to $784 million from $8,549 million a year earlier. Advertising revenue reached $59.36 billion as ad impressions rose 14% and the average price per ad rose 12%, with daily users across its apps averaging 3.60 billion in the quarter's final month. Total expenses climbed 55% to $42.03 billion, including $2.40 billion of legal charges and $1.18 billion of severance, pushing operating income down 8% to $18.78 billion and operating margin to 31% from 43%; GAAP diluted earnings per share were $6.18, down from $7.14. The Family of Apps segment earned $23.39 billion in operating income, while Reality Labs lost $4.62 billion, and capital expenditures reached $31.08 billion against depreciation and amortization of $6.36 billion. Meta guided third-quarter revenue to $61 billion to $64 billion, full-year expenses to $165 billion to $169 billion, and capital spending of $130 billion to $145 billion, and warned that youth-related trials this year may ultimately result in a material loss.

BOE and OnePlus jointly launch next-generation OLED display to offset panel price decline pressure
On October 9, BOE and OnePlus jointly launched a next-generation OLED display to offset the profitability pressure caused by falling OLED panel prices. Zhou Hua, chief analyst at CINNO Research, believes the flexible OLED panel industry is currently under significant pressure. Rising storage costs are squeezing profit margins for smartphone makers, and combined with shrinking handset demand, the supply-demand imbalance has intensified, driving panel prices steadily downward. CINNO Research expects the price of a 6.7-inch flexible OLED panel to fall to 18 US dollars in the third quarter of 2026, a decline of 50 percent compared with the first quarter of 2023. BOE Chairman Chen Yanshun said at the online briefing on the 2026 interim results on September 22 that this year has been very difficult for the OLED panel business. The storage value alone in a single phone exceeds 3,000 yuan, and global smartphone sales this year are around 1.2 billion units, down nearly 12 percent from last year. BOE's OLED business is expected to maintain growth this year, but still faces considerable operating pressure. Data from Sigmaintell show that in the first half of 2026, global shipments of flexible OLED smartphone panels totaled 350 million units, up 15.6 percent year on year. Of that, shipments from mainland China were about 200 million units, up about 5.9 percent year on year. Samsung Display ranked first with about 120 million units, while BOE ranked second globally and first in China with 81.4 million units. Wang Xiaoya, research director of Sigmaintell's mobile business unit, said the growth in shipment scale has not yet translated into improved profitability. Domestic OLED panel makers generally face considerable operating pressure, and the industry is at a critical stage of transitioning from scale expansion to value enhancement. Samsung Display's OLED panel business is currently profitable, but China's OLED panel industry as a whole has not yet reached profitability. One of BOE's goals for 2026 is to substantially improve the profitability of its OLED panel business and strive to move toward break-even. Manufacturers such as Visionox, Tianma, and TCL CSOT are also seeking breakthroughs in high-value-added products.

Unity Software Upgraded to Outperform by Raymond James After Google Partnership
Raymond James upgraded Unity Software to Outperform and lifted its price target, sending shares up 2% in premarket trading on Thursday. Analyst Andrew Marok wrote that the firm's view had already become increasingly constructive following materially stronger-than-expected execution in Grow, where Vector growth and resulting operating leverage have moved ahead of the more gradual initiation. Unity Software Adds Day One Engine Support for Meta VR Glasses
Unity Software announced day one engine support for Meta VR Glasses, the next Meta headset slated for launch in spring 2027. The news gives Unity a clear role in Meta's next virtual reality cycle, and the stock has run hard into that story, with a 7 day share price return of 14.6% and a 90 day gain of 54.01%, while the 1 year total shareholder return of 21.72% sits against a 5 year total shareholder return that declined 66.34%. Unity Software closed at $45.68, against a widely followed fair value estimate of $49.39 that implies roughly 8% undervaluation and rests on expectations of $3.6b in revenue and $989.9m in earnings by 2029, a future P/E multiple of 30.8x, and a 27.9% profit margin in three years. The thesis carries clear pressure points, including heavy AI and product spending, execution risk in non gaming categories such as automotive and healthcare, privacy rules that could limit ad performance, and reliance on large deals with groups such as Tencent and Scopely, all set against a current net loss of $587.5m. On price based yardsticks the stock trades at a P/S ratio of 9.9x, versus 3.9x for the broader US software group and 5.8x for closer peers, with a fair ratio of 8.5x.
Deutsche Bank Sees Meta Muse Driving Up to $36.3 Billion in Sales by 2030
Deutsche Bank has laid out three scenarios for Meta Muse, forecasting that the product could generate $36.3 billion in sales by 2030 in its most optimistic case. The middle case projects about $10.7 million, while the base case puts revenue potential at roughly $2.4 billion. The forecasts were detailed on page seven of a Deutsche Bank note, and Yahoo Finance Executive Editor Brian Sozzi said he double-checked the top figure to confirm it was $36.3 billion and not $36.3 million. Sozzi noted Meta's stock has climbed roughly 23 to 24 percent over the past month on optimism about Muse, citing strong downloads and early use cases. He also discussed Meta's talent push, including the hiring of the former MongoDB chief executive, with a former Meta chief technology officer who said Mark Zuckerberg personally recruits key leaders.

Dutch eyewear chain suspends sales of Meta smart glasses over privacy concerns
Hans Anders, one of the largest eyewear retail chains in the Netherlands, announced on the 2nd that it has suspended sales of Meta's Ray-Ban smart glasses in the Netherlands and Belgium amid growing privacy concerns. It is the first such move by a retailer. Hans Anders said the decision to halt sales came in response to ongoing public debate and political discussion surrounding smart glasses, and questions being raised about the conditions under which the technology should be used. Criticism is mounting in the Netherlands as backlash against camera-equipped smart glasses spreads. A Meta spokesperson said the company is continuing to develop smart glasses, and that all camera-equipped smart glasses flash a bright light on the front when taking photos or videos, that this light cannot be turned off, and that covering or tampering with the camera renders it unusable. In the Netherlands, the privacy regulator warned last month that videos taken with smart glasses showing identifiable people must in principle not be shared or published without their consent, though obtaining such consent for filming in public places is difficult. Hans Anders is a subsidiary of Nexeye, which is owned by private equity firm KKR, and Nexeye operates 776 stores across five countries: the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Austria and Sweden, but it does not sell Meta's smart glasses outside the Netherlands and Belgium.

Meta's Reality Labs Posts $4.62 Billion Quarterly Loss as Break-Even Remains Distant
Meta Platforms' Reality Labs unit generated $431 million of second-quarter revenue against a $4.62 billion operating loss, with a first-half loss of $8.65 billion, leaving the business far from covering its costs. Adding the quarterly operating loss to revenue implies approximately $5.05 billion of operating costs, meaning revenue would need to reach $5.05 billion to break even at fixed costs, nearly 12 times the reported figure. At an illustrative 30% contribution margin on incremental revenue, offsetting the current $4.62 billion operating loss would require roughly $15.4 billion of additional quarterly sales, and at a 50% margin the requirement would still be around $9.24 billion. Meta's Family of Apps produced $23.39 billion of quarterly operating income against consolidated operating income of $18.78 billion, so Reality Labs consumed approximately 20% of the apps' operating profit. Annualizing the latest Reality Labs loss gives about $18.48 billion, and under an illustrative 20% tax assumption eliminating that expense would add about $14.78 billion of after-tax profit, worth about $370 billion at a hypothetical 25 times earnings, roughly one-fifth of Meta's current market capitalization. Meta is simultaneously funding a large AI infrastructure program, with second-quarter operating cash flow of $31.86 billion and capital spending of $31.08 billion leaving only about $784 million of free cash flow, against a stated annual capital-spending range of $130 billion to $145 billion.

Report: Apple's New CEO Weighs Sweeping Engineering-Led Overhaul
Bloomberg reported on the 29th, citing people familiar with the matter, that Apple's new chief executive, John Ternus, is weighing a sweeping overhaul aimed at sharpening the company's engineering focus, increasing the frequency of product launches and slimming down the organization. Early-stage proposals reportedly include moving away from the traditional spring and fall product launch cycles and eliminating some middle-management layers to bring engineers closer to top executives. Ternus, who has been at Apple for 25 years and spent many years leading the hardware division, overseeing the development of multiple generations of the iPhone, took over as CEO this autumn, succeeding Tim Cook. According to the report, cost-cutting efforts are already under way, and Ternus is also exploring new revenue sources and ways to extract more value from existing products. He has told the company internally that staying competitive in the age of artificial intelligence will require faster product launches and more experimental ventures. According to Bloomberg, Apple's hardware engineering division has begun cutting engineering program management roles, affecting several program managers, including about six directors. Snap Inc. unveiled SPECS Intelligence, an anticipatory AI service spanning iPhone, Mac, and SPECS AR glasses, and announced enterprise-focused SPECS deployments with partners including Salesforce, AWS, NVIDIA, Trifork, and Hololight to support hands-free information access and secure, large-scale workplace use. The launch extends Snap's AR and AI capabilities beyond consumer social media into workplace productivity and business-to-business use cases. Snap's narrative projects $8.1 billion revenue and $384.0 million earnings by 2029, yielding a $7.33 fair value and 40% upside to its current price. The most bearish analysts had assumed only about 8 percent annual revenue growth and earnings of roughly US$14.8 million by 2029. The most immediate catalyst for Snap remains advertising recovery, while the biggest risk remains ongoing losses and cost pressures, and the company still faces legal and regulatory risks including recent social media addiction litigation.

Jefferies Downgrades Roblox to Underperform, Says Rally Overpriced
Jefferies cut its rating on Roblox to Underperform, arguing the stock's recent post-earnings rally has already priced in more bookings strength than the business is likely to deliver. The downgrade follows a sharp pullback in Roblox shares, with a 1-day return of -9.86% and a 7-day decline of 18.32%, though the 30-day share price return remains up 8.64%. The stock now trades near US$42, sitting between a Jefferies target of US$38 and a much higher intrinsic estimate, while the year-to-date share price return is down 48.29% and the 1-year total shareholder return is down 70.43%. The most followed narrative on the stock pegs fair value closer to $21.48, implying a steep valuation gap, while a discounted cash flow model estimates fair value at $74.84. Roblox faces real pressure if bookings growth underwhelms or if safety and content moderation expenses keep cash generation from tracking the optimistic narrative.

Meta Platforms said its Muse AI assistant is coming to its AI glasses in the next few months, and the stock fell about 3.6% from Friday's close to $724.92 in Monday trading. The company plans to offer more than 100 glasses styles by year-end, and it will bring a hearing-enhancement feature to supported glasses in the U.S. later this year for $149.99 or through a Meta One subscription. The pitch is that users can look at something, ask Muse to handle it, and skip the long explanation. GuruFocus puts Meta's GF Value at $857.84, or 15.49% above the September 28 share price, with the investment case resting on whether users keep using the device and pay for what it does.

Monness Raises Meta Price Target to $830 on Muse AI Momentum
Monness, Crespi, Hardt raised its price target on Meta Platforms to $830 from $730 while keeping a Buy rating, citing last week's Meta Connect 2026 event. The new target sits about 10% above Friday's close of $751.66, though Meta shares were down 2.08% in premarket. At Connect, Meta showcased its recently launched personal AI agent Muse, unveiled Muse Charm and announced new AI glasses, including an audio-only line without cameras, alongside lightweight Meta VR Glasses. Monness said Meta struggled for most of 2026 to show concrete evidence that its capital spending and Meta Superintelligence Labs pay packages were improving its AI position, and that Muse's early traction has shifted the narrative in its favor. The firm remains more measured than several peers: Canaccord raised its target to $950 on strong early Muse adoption, while Jefferies, TD Cowen and Piper Sandler sit between $865 and $875, and Oppenheimer holds a Perform rating, questioning how Meta will make money from Muse despite U.S. downloads of about 340,000 a day.
Meta Unveils Muse Charm Device as Stock Jumps 14% on AI Push
Meta used its Meta Connect event to unveil the Muse Charm, a standalone pocket device built exclusively for voice interaction with the company's new Muse agent, alongside a major push into what Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg called Personal Superintelligence. The Muse Charm debut came late Wednesday, and Meta also showed off the Meta VR Glasses, a 100-gram spatial computing headset priced at $1,299 with 5K micro-OLED displays, tethered puck processing, and native eye and hand tracking, plus the third-generation Ray-Ban Meta Gen 3 glasses starting at an entry-level $249 and camera-free Ray-Ban Meta Audio glasses for open-ear listening and AI voice interaction. Meta's Muse has amassed more than 3.4 million downloads since its Sept. 8 launch, according to new Sensor Tower data obtained by Yahoo Finance, including 2.8 million in its first two weeks, versus 3.7 million for OpenAI's ChatGPT, 400,000 for SpaceXAI's Grok, and 300,000 for Anthropic's Claude over the same 14 days post-launch. Meta stock has surged 14% in the past five days, even as it trades on a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 22 times, below its long-term average of 23.1 times, with 2027 EPS estimates still well below levels seen 90 days ago. Citi analyst Ronald Josey said the firm emerges from Meta Connect incrementally positive on Meta shares, calling Muse the centerpiece of Meta's AI product strategy as voice, additional distribution points through Meta Glasses, and services across shopping, travel, and productivity verticals could unlock incremental monetization opportunities.

SoftBank to Launch Ray-Ban Meta Gen 3 in Japan on September 25
SoftBank is set to roll out the new Ray-Ban Meta Gen 3 in Japan on September 25, giving Meta Platforms another distribution channel for its AI-powered smart glasses. The Japanese carrier has been steadily expanding its smart-glasses business, becoming the country's first mobile network operator to sell Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 glasses in June and enlarging its Meta glasses assortment again in August. Alongside the Gen 3 launch, SoftBank will also add Meta Glasses by LISA to its lineup. The wider retail and carrier availability matters to Meta because smart glasses are a prominent piece of its push to extend artificial intelligence beyond smartphones and PCs, and could help it gauge whether AI-powered wearables can become a substantial consumer hardware category. Meta shares closed up 4.5% at $777.59 on Thursday, while SoftBank Group's U.S.-listed shares slumped 7.6%.

Dolby and Meta Expand Atmos and Vision Across Meta Ecosystem
Dolby Laboratories Inc. and Meta Platforms Inc. said Wednesday they are expanding Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision across Meta's ecosystem. Meta's new AI glasses will be the first global consumer device that can capture audio in Dolby Atmos, letting users record spatial audio and share it on Instagram, which already supports Dolby Vision. The rollout builds on Meta's introduction of Dolby Vision on Instagram last year, and Meta also said its upcoming VR device will support Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos when it launches next year. The announcement came as Meta used Connect 2026 to unveil a $1,299 VR glasses device, expand its AI glasses lineup and bring its Muse personal AI agent to more products. The partnership expands Dolby's presence across Meta's social media, wearable and virtual reality platforms.

Meta Unveils 100-Gram VR Glasses at $1,299.99, Sets Spring 2027 Launch
Meta Platforms unveiled Meta VR Glasses, a roughly 100-gram virtual-reality device that will go on sale in spring 2027 for $1,299.99. The headset features a 5K Infinite Display with micro-OLED panels, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, runs on Qualcomm's Snapdragon Reality Elite processor, and integrates Meta AI with eye, voice and hand-gesture controls; a two-part design houses compute, battery and storage in a separate tethered puck. Meta VR Glasses are the first IMAX Enhanced-certified VR device, offering 3D movies and more than 100 immersive live U.S. sports events annually, plus multi-screen workspaces and more than 75 games at launch. The launch comes as Meta's Reality Labs revenues rose 16% year over year to $431 million in the second quarter of 2026, growth that was partially offset by lower Quest headset sales, and as Apple expands Apple Vision Pro into accessibility applications such as eye-based control for power wheelchair drive systems and Alphabet pushes Android XR smart glasses built with Samsung, Gentle Monster and Warby Parker. Meta shares have rallied 17.8% year to date, trailing the broader Zacks Computer & Technology sector's 21.7% return, and carry a forward 12-month Price/Sales of 6.77X versus the Internet Software industry's 4.42X.

Meta's AI Wearables Push Targets Trillions, JPMorgan Says
JPMorgan analyst Doug Anmuth sees Meta Platforms' eclectic new AI hardware lineup as part of a much larger AI platform that could address a market worth tens of trillions of dollars. Meta plans to offer more than 100 glasses across Ray-Ban, Oakley and Meta by year-end, targeting the more than 2 billion people who already wear glasses, and has shifted Reality Labs toward wearables designed around Muse and personal superintelligence. The lineup spans a hearing-enhancement feature in the U.S., the Muse Charm keychain device Zuckerberg called a "joyful little device" that is expected to ship in December, and Meta VR Glasses, described as a "private cinema" at roughly 100 grams and expected in spring 2027 for $1,299. Anmuth says Muse is already reaching millions of people and could eventually become a personal agent for billions, with JPMorgan expecting Meta to eventually monetize transactions between users, businesses and AI agents through fees or commissions. Direct Muse monetization remains limited today, and the bigger test for investors is whether Meta can turn the collection of products into a single AI ecosystem capable of expanding the company beyond advertising.

Meta Surges as Muse Launch Lifts Stock From AI Laggard to Leader
Meta is drawing renewed investor confidence as its Muse AI product climbs the App Store and the company builds momentum around its Meta Connect event, according to KeyBanc Capital Markets Managing Director Justin Patterson. Patterson said Meta spent the year trading at its widest PE discount to Google in roughly a decade, with investors withholding credit for its CapEx and AI investments, but that gap has now closed as Muse drives consumer engagement, business connectors and a new device cycle. He noted the AI cycle is humbling, recalling that a year ago Google was seen as the AI loser before Gemini's Nano Banana shot to the top of the App Store and the stock gained over 100% in a year, while Meta has now moved past the social addiction trial and a successful Muse launch. Patterson said the next leg of the trade is watching the Muse ecosystem build out through more app downloads and connectors, which should eventually translate into top-line revisions and a path to $40 plus in earnings on 2028. He added that Meta reset its AI strategy away from Llama and formed the MSL group, Super intelligence labs, whose team has delivered frequent model updates and a consumer-facing AI product, taking the company from laggard to leader in a matter of months.

Meta Bets Future on Muse AI Agent as It Tops App Stores
Meta is banking its future on its new Muse AI agent, which CEO Mark Zuckerberg unveiled as the centerpiece of the company's vision at the Meta Connect conference on Wednesday. The agent has quickly jumped to the top of both Apple's App Store and Google's Play Store, and according to Zuckerberg, millions of people are already using it. Chief AI officer Alexandr Wang demonstrated use cases ranging from scheduling meetings to negotiating better cable rates and making purchases across multiple services, and Meta is also bringing Muse to its next-generation Meta VR Glasses and to the Muse Charm, a handheld device that lets users interact with the agent without a smartphone or smart glasses. Meta said it will make money from Muse by taking a small cut on transactions made via the agent, and Zuckerberg said he expects Muse to grow into the personal super intelligence that billions of people around the world will use. The company dedicated part of the keynote to privacy, citing the Muse Secure VM and a forthcoming Muse Confidential VM, though it may take time to earn trust after its $5 billion settlement over the Cambridge Analytica data privacy scandal in 2019.

Meta Expands Dolby Atmos and Vision Integration Across AI Glasses, Instagram and VR Headset
Meta and Dolby Laboratories announced earlier this month that Meta AI glasses will capture audio in Dolby Atmos and that Dolby Vision experiences will expand across Instagram and Meta's next VR headset, deepening Dolby's role in social, AR, and VR media. The move extends Dolby's technologies beyond traditional cinema and home entertainment into everyday content creation and sharing, embedding its formats directly into one of the world's largest consumer ecosystems. The Meta deal sits alongside recent updates to Dolby OptiView, including the addition of Dolby Vision and AI powered Sports Intelligence, as part of a broader push beyond traditional cinema and home entertainment. Dolby Laboratories' narrative projects $1.6 billion revenue and $390.9 million earnings by 2029, requiring 6.4% yearly revenue growth and about a $164.7 million earnings increase from $226.2 million today, with a $79.00 fair value implying 36% upside to its current price. Some of the lowest analysts were already cautious, assuming revenue would only reach about US$1.6 billion and earnings US$396.8 million by 2029, leaving investors to weigh that more pessimistic view against the Meta-driven expansion story.

Meta launches camera-free AI glasses after privacy backlash
Meta has unveiled a new camera-free version of its smart glasses following concerns that the devices are being used to film women and girls without their consent. The audio-only Ray-Ban glasses, announced at the company's annual conference in California, will be available next month from a starting price of $349. The launch comes after critics dubbed the camera-equipped wearables "pervert" glasses, and private schools including Haberdashers' Boys' School in Hertfordshire banned pupils from wearing them, while pub chain JD Wetherspoon, English courts, theatres and restaurants have also prohibited the technology. Meta also announced dozens of new models that will retain the ability to take photos and film, and said the display version of its flagship Meta Ray-Ban glasses, priced from $799, will soon be available in new markets including Britain, France, Italy, Germany and Canada. Vishal Shah, head of AI products at Meta, said built-in privacy features including a recording indicator light were "really important", while chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said most of the nearly two billion people worldwide who wear glasses will upgrade to AI glasses in the coming years. Meta additionally announced a new personal AI assistant, Muse, accessible through a new handheld device, which Zuckerberg called the "centrepiece of our vision".
