BOE unveils fourth-generation Oriental Screen, to debut on OnePlus 16 flagship phone

On October 9, BOE and OnePlus jointly launched the fourth-generation Oriental Screen, which will debut on the upcoming OnePlus 16 flagship phone. The screen uses BOE's f-OLED high-end flexible display technology and adopts industry-leading new-generation luminescent materials. It is the industry's first screen to achieve a global ultra-high refresh rate of 165Hz through full-chain hardware, 185Hz in specific scenarios such as esports, and to comply with dynamic clarity standards. Previously, BOE, OPPO, OnePlus and others jointly released the group standard 'Test Method for Dynamic Clarity of Ultra-High-Definition OLED Display Devices'. The fourth-generation Oriental Screen is the first OLED phone screen mass-produced under this dynamic clarity standard after its release. According to the introduction, the fourth-generation Oriental Screen improves picture continuity by 47%, reduces afterimages by 52%, increases display speed by 35%, shortens control time by 11.1 milliseconds, and improves control speed by 25%. In terms of ultra-low power consumption, it is equipped with the first 22-nanometer display driver chip and the first touch chip customized for OnePlus. Compared with the previous generation, brightness increases by 10% while power consumption decreases by 15%. BOE currently has three mass-produced sixth-generation flexible OLED production lines and one mass-produced 8.6-generation OLED production line. According to Omdia data, its flexible OLED shipments have long ranked first domestically and second globally.

BOE and OnePlus jointly launch next-generation OLED display to offset panel price decline pressure

On October 9, BOE and OnePlus jointly launched a next-generation OLED display to offset the profitability pressure caused by falling OLED panel prices. Zhou Hua, chief analyst at CINNO Research, believes the flexible OLED panel industry is currently under significant pressure. Rising storage costs are squeezing profit margins for smartphone makers, and combined with shrinking handset demand, the supply-demand imbalance has intensified, driving panel prices steadily downward. CINNO Research expects the price of a 6.7-inch flexible OLED panel to fall to 18 US dollars in the third quarter of 2026, a decline of 50 percent compared with the first quarter of 2023. BOE Chairman Chen Yanshun said at the online briefing on the 2026 interim results on September 22 that this year has been very difficult for the OLED panel business. The storage value alone in a single phone exceeds 3,000 yuan, and global smartphone sales this year are around 1.2 billion units, down nearly 12 percent from last year. BOE's OLED business is expected to maintain growth this year, but still faces considerable operating pressure. Data from Sigmaintell show that in the first half of 2026, global shipments of flexible OLED smartphone panels totaled 350 million units, up 15.6 percent year on year. Of that, shipments from mainland China were about 200 million units, up about 5.9 percent year on year. Samsung Display ranked first with about 120 million units, while BOE ranked second globally and first in China with 81.4 million units. Wang Xiaoya, research director of Sigmaintell's mobile business unit, said the growth in shipment scale has not yet translated into improved profitability. Domestic OLED panel makers generally face considerable operating pressure, and the industry is at a critical stage of transitioning from scale expansion to value enhancement. Samsung Display's OLED panel business is currently profitable, but China's OLED panel industry as a whole has not yet reached profitability. One of BOE's goals for 2026 is to substantially improve the profitability of its OLED panel business and strive to move toward break-even. Manufacturers such as Visionox, Tianma, and TCL CSOT are also seeking breakthroughs in high-value-added products.
