Samsung's AI memory boom powers record profit, but peak-margin fears grow
▼
OpenAI training pause hits AI chip demand OpenAI paused training its most advanced models after a security incident, and Samsung fell 4.6% as investors feared slower AI spending. This is a reminder that Samsung's biggest growth driver — AI memory demand — depends on a handful of AI companies whose plans can change quickly.
Shows a real demand-side risk that can move the stock down.
Samsung invests $1B in KKR's AI infrastructure Samsung committed $1 billion to KKR's Helix Digital Infrastructure, which builds data centers, power and cooling for AI. This ties Samsung closer to the AI build-out and could create future demand for its chips and equipment, supporting the stock.
New capital commitment that strengthens Samsung's AI ecosystem position.
Korea exports surge on AI chip demand South Korea's September exports jumped 83.5%, the fastest in nearly 50 years, with memory chips from Samsung and SK Hynix at the center. The World Bank also raised its regional growth forecast, citing AI exports. Strong demand supports Samsung's sales and profits.
Confirms the AI memory boom is still driving real, broad-based demand.
Record Q3 profit expected, but margin peak worries Analysts expect Samsung's Q3 operating profit to surge nearly 9-fold to a record 106.1 trillion won, driven by AI memory demand. But slowing memory price increases raise concerns that chip margins may have peaked, a real counterweight that could cap the stock's upside.
The key upcoming event: huge profit expected, but peak-margin fear is the main risk.
Foreign investors pull $131 billion from South Korean stocks as AI rally fades
Foreign investors have withdrawn $131 billion from South Korean equities this year, the largest outflow among major Asian markets, as enthusiasm for artificial intelligence-related investments fades. Trading turnover in South Korea's $4.3 trillion equity market has plunged 70% from its late-May peak, while the benchmark Kospi has fallen 22% in the second half of 2026, according to Bloomberg. The reversal follows a first-half rally that made the Kospi the world's best-performing major equity benchmark, driven largely by demand for AI memory chips. Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, which together account for more than half the index's weighting, have become a source of vulnerability, and Samsung shares declined Thursday despite the company reporting a nearly ninefold increase in quarterly operating profit. Market support from corporate share repurchases is also weakening, with Samsung and SK Hynix approaching completion of combined buyback programmes worth 55 trillion won, or $41 billion, while outstanding margin loans have fallen to approximately 33 trillion won from a June peak of 38.6 trillion won and brokerage deposits have dropped to around 100 trillion won from nearly 140 trillion won. Investors are increasingly favouring Taiwan, whose Taiex has gained 70% this year and outperformed the Kospi by approximately 23 percentage points last quarter, with UBS Global Wealth Management saying it prefers Taiwan equities for tactical AI exposure.

Musk's Terafab to Begin Mass Production in Texas by 2032
Plans emerged on the 9th that Terafab, the semiconductor manufacturing initiative launched by American businessman Elon Musk, aims to have a large-scale mass production plant operating in Texas by 2032. According to people familiar with the matter, preparations are underway to start up a semiconductor pilot plant in the state during 2027, and orders have already begun to be placed with Japanese semiconductor manufacturing equipment and materials companies for the pilot plant. The plant is expected to be completed as early as July 2027 and to begin operating within that year. At the large-scale mass production plant targeted for operation in 2032, production of logic semiconductors capable of advanced computing and memory will be handled at a single facility, with final production scale projected at roughly 1 million wafers per month, of which about 70 percent of capacity will be allocated to memory and about 30 percent to logic. The production scale will be comparable to the large-scale plants of major semiconductor makers such as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing and South Korea's Samsung Electronics. For logic semiconductor production, Intel of the United States will provide technical cooperation, with adjustments underway to adopt the company's 2-nanometer and 1.4-nanometer circuit linewidth technologies, while for memory manufacturing a plan has surfaced for a Taiwanese company to provide technical cooperation. Terafab is an initiative announced by Musk in March, under which the electric vehicle giant Tesla and space development company SpaceX will lead the development of semiconductor plants, investing 55 billion dollars initially, with total investment potentially expanding to 119 billion dollars including additional portions.

Console Sales Hit 13-Year Low as Memory Shortage Lifts Prices Ahead of GTA VI
Video game console sales have fallen to their lowest August level in 13 years, with the memory shortage continuing to weigh on consumer prices. Dan Howley, Yahoo Finance Technology Editor, said a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series S or Series X bought in 2020 or 2021 is now worth more than its original price, with consoles going for $150 to $200 above their initial launch price. He attributed the increases to President Trump's tariffs last year and to the data center build out, which has made storage chips and memory chips harder to come by and more expensive, costs that companies like Apple, Samsung, HP and Dell pass on to consumers. Nintendo raised the price of its original Switch, which came out in 2017, and also raised the price of its Switch 2 by $50 when President Trump introduced tariffs on consoles made in China. Howley said the hope is that Grand Theft Auto VI, which launches in November, will lift console demand, noting that GTA 5 had made $6 billion as of a few years ago and that developers have moved their games earlier or into 2027 to avoid its blast radius.

Samsung Wallet Adds USDC Stablecoin Transfers Across 82 Million Devices
Samsung Wallet is adding support for transfers using USDC, the stablecoin issued by Circle that is designed to maintain a 1-to-1 value with the US dollar. The feature will reach 82 million Samsung devices and will run largely on Solana, according to commentary from Scott Melker on "The Daily Wolf." The capability is aimed primarily at remittances and cross-border payments, and users will not need a separate crypto app or to manage private keys themselves, since the functionality sits inside the Samsung Wallet already installed on their phones. Melker framed the move as a major step toward mainstream adoption, arguing blockchain wins when it is completely abstracted away and users never know they are using crypto, and compared it to SoFi's plan to settle its Mastercard entirely on blockchain rails while merchants still get paid in dollars. He added that the development implies significant traffic for Solana.
Samsung Seeks $186M From CMA CGM Over Container Charges
Samsung Electronics America is seeking at least $186 million from CMA CGM in a Federal Maritime Commission complaint alleging the ocean carrier imposed unlawful container charges and failed to fulfill inland transportation commitments. The French carrier disputes the allegations and has asked the commission to dismiss the case. The dispute centers on store-door shipments, under which CMA CGM agreed to transport Samsung's containers from overseas origins through U.S. ports to designated inland destinations, with Samsung arguing the carrier passed along costs from delays it was responsible for arranging. Samsung says it paid more than 121,000 demurrage, detention and associated charges, including more than 26,000 individual demurrage charges and over 94,000 detention-type charges, and seeks approximately $148 million in disputed demurrage, detention, rail storage and related charges and costs, at least $8.1 million in additional expenses, and approximately $30 million in prejudgment interest, plus legal fees, meaning its total demand could exceed $186 million. Samsung contends the carrier's conduct violated Section 41102(c) of the Shipping Act and is asking the FMC to award reparations and order CMA CGM to cease the allegedly unlawful practices, while CMA CGM has characterized the dispute as arising from the exceptional operating conditions of the Covid-19 pandemic and maintains it complied with its contractual obligations and applicable regulations.

South Korean stocks close down nearly 2% ahead of Samsung's third-quarter earnings
South Korea's benchmark composite index closed at 6,803.90 points, down 137.49 points, or 1.98%, today (Oct. 7), its second straight session of declines, pressured by a slump in technology shares amid concerns over oil prices rising again. Tech stocks led the market lower, with Samsung Electronics falling 1.29%, SK hynix dropping 2.82%, SK Square down 1.64%, and Samsung Electro-Mechanics sliding 4.24%. Brent crude for December delivery jumped 1.17% to 101.76 dollars a barrel in Asian morning trading, while WTI crude for November delivery climbed 1.26% to 90.57 dollars a barrel, after Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen launched attacks on Saudi Arabia, raising concerns about crude shipments from the Middle East. Analysts said investors were cautious ahead of Samsung Electronics' preliminary earnings report, prompting foreign and institutional investors to sell more shares than they bought. A survey of analyst estimates compiled by LSEG SmartEstimate indicated that analysts expect Samsung to post third-quarter operating profit of 106.1 trillion won, nearly nine times higher. Taiwan Stocks Surge 72%, Overtaking South Korea as World's Hottest Market on AI Wave
Taiwan's stock market is emerging as a more compelling choice than South Korea's for investors looking to ride the artificial intelligence wave in the final stretch of 2026, after growth in the AI industry began spreading from chipmakers to other businesses across the supply chain. Taiwan's Taiex index has jumped roughly 72% since the start of 2026, the highest among more than 90 global equity indexes tracked by Bloomberg, while South Korea's KOSPI has gained about 63%, ranking second. In the third quarter, the Taiex outperformed the KOSPI by about 23 percentage points, the widest gap since the early 2000s, and earnings estimate upgrades for Taiwanese listed companies outpaced South Korea's for the first time since March 2025. Earnings estimates for companies in the Taiex were revised up by about 19% in the quarter ending in September, compared with an increase of about 15% for KOSPI companies. A Bank of America fund manager survey in September found that about 40% of respondents said they were overweight Taiwanese stocks relative to the benchmark, compared with 25% who held the same view on South Korean stocks. In the survey of 87 fund managers overseeing a combined 211 billion dollars in assets, 35% said Taiwan would be the Asian stock market to benefit most from AI going forward, while only 5% chose South Korea. A key factor is Taiwan's industrial structure, which is linked to the AI supply chain at many levels, from semiconductor design and manufacturing to chip packaging, networking systems and servers. South Korea's market, by contrast, still relies on just a few large chipmakers, particularly Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, which fell between 19% and 33% in the three months ending in September after six straight quarters of gains. Societe Generale continues to favour Taiwanese stocks over South Korean ones, expecting the rise in memory chip prices to slow over the coming quarters before returning to normal in 2028 amid growing competition from Chinese producers. However, Peter Lee, a managing director at Citigroup, believes investors should start accumulating shares such as Samsung and SK Hynix, because the market may be underestimating demand for high-bandwidth memory chips, or HBM, in 2027. On valuations, Taiwan's market trades at about 18 times forward 12-month earnings estimates, above the KOSPI's roughly 5.5 times. And Taiwan's rally is not confined to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. alone. TSMC shares rose 2.9% in the quarter ending in September, their sixth straight quarterly gain, while about 10% of stocks in the Taiex have at least doubled since the start of the year, compared with just 4.1% of KOSPI stocks and 5.7% of stocks in Japan's Nikkei 225.

Goldman Sachs warns Samsung faces triple-hit volatility on October 8
Goldman Sachs analyst Heather Oh warned clients that a rare convergence of three simultaneous market events on Thursday, October 8 will expose Samsung Electronics to an unusual burst of near-term volatility. The three events are Samsung's third-quarter preliminary earnings report, potential mechanical selling from semiconductor ETF rebalancing, and options expiry combined with the roll-off of the company's buyback program. Goldman estimates Samsung's third-quarter operating profit at W106 trillion, in line with street consensus of W105.5 trillion but a 5% cut from its prior estimate of W112 trillion, a revision the bank attributed primarily to Korean won strength, with the average USD/KRW rate tracking around 1,418 versus its prior assumption of 1,460. Seven semiconductor ETFs with combined assets under management of roughly W19 trillion, approximately $14 billion, are scheduled to rebalance on October 8, and local media and the street expect Samsung to face outflows due to a weighting cap in those vehicles while SK Hynix and semiconductor equipment makers absorb the offsetting inflows. Samsung's W15 trillion repurchase program was expected to be completed this week, eliminating a reliable source of daily buying support, and foreign investors were net sellers of Samsung for five consecutive days ahead of October 8, totaling net outflows of approximately $2.6 billion. Goldman maintained a constructive view on the operating fundamentals, saying it believes W100tn+ operating profit is backed by solid DRAM and NAND fundamentals with HBM growth the standout, and it expects Samsung's HBM bit shipments to grow close to 50% quarter-on-quarter in the third quarter, driven by the ramp of HBM4 shipments, while conventional DRAM bit growth is described as largely flattish given the limited level of inventory.

World Bank upgrades East Asia and Pacific growth forecast for 2026 to 4.5%, warns of AI dependence risks
The World Bank has raised its economic growth forecast for the East Asia and Pacific region in 2026 by 0.3 percentage points to 4.5%, up from its April estimate, driven mainly by exports of goods related to artificial intelligence. The region covers 23 economies, including China, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand, and growth is expected to slow to 4.4% in 2027 and 4.3% in 2028. Vietnam received the largest upgrade, up 1.1 percentage points to 7.4%. The World Bank said AI-related goods contributed more than half of export growth in most countries in the region, and accounted for more than 70% of export growth in Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. China, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam together exported AI-related goods worth 1.4 trillion dollars in the 12 months ending in April. Meanwhile, South Korea's exports in September rose 83.5% to a record high of 120.9 billion dollars, with chips accounting for about half of total exports, and Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix together carried a weight of 43% of the Kospi index value at the end of April. The World Bank warned that a key risk lies in AI capital spending, which has reached about 6% of US GDP, close to the peak level of information technology investment in 2000. Of the total planned AI capital expenditure of 2.9 trillion dollars between 2025 and 2028, about 800 billion dollars is expected to come from private credit markets, with the share of AI-related lending rising to 34% of all activity in 2025, compared with an average of just 18% over the previous five years. Meanwhile, the US Federal Reserve raised interest rates last September, its first hike in more than three years, and signalled it may raise rates once more this year. The World Bank estimates that if the US economy slows by 1 percentage point, growth in other emerging markets would fall by about 0.6 percentage points. Taiwan has raised its 2026 economic growth forecast to 11% from 9.6%.

Micron Technology's earnings surge could prove more durable than past memory cycles as AI-driven demand keeps HBM and DRAM supply tight into 2027 and beyond. Micron's GAAP net income jumped to $37.7 billion in fiscal Q4 2026 from $3.2 billion a year earlier, while fiscal 2026 net income surged to $85 billion from $8.5 billion in fiscal 2025, and revenue rose to $133.2 billion from $37.4 billion. At the October 1 closing price of 1,097.39, Micron's market cap was around $1.24 trillion, about 14.5x fiscal 2026 earnings, though annualizing the latest quarter's profit brings the multiple to roughly 8.2x. Micron expects fiscal Q1 revenue of about $61.5 billion and non-GAAP EPS of roughly $38.15, and sees the memory industry remaining tightly supplied through 2028, with DRAM bit shipments growing in the low-20% range in both 2027 and 2028. Samsung expects HBM to consume nearly 30% of global DRAM wafer capacity in 2027 versus about 20% currently, and TrendForce reported DRAM industry revenue rose 59.5% sequentially to $154.73 billion in the second quarter. Micron has signed 26 strategic customer agreements covering more than 35% of expected revenue through 2030, with three-quarters of that revenue under a defined pricing framework, while hedge funds holding the stock rose to 184 in Q2 from 154 in Q1 and short interest fell to 2.5% of the float from 2.6%.
Google Raises Pixel 10a Price by $100 to $599 on Memory Cost Pressure
Google has raised the price of its seven-month-old Pixel 10a smartphone by $100 to $599 for the 128GB model, another sign of how rising memory costs are pushing up prices across the consumer electronics industry. The Pixel 10a launched in March at $499 for the 128GB model and $599 for the 256GB version, and Google's U.S. website now lists the phones at $599 and $699, respectively. The increase was first spotted on Google's online store in Japan and later appeared on its U.S. website, according to 9to5Google. The move comes amid a persistent memory-chip shortage that has pushed up costs across the consumer electronics industry, with Samsung this week raising prices on most of its Galaxy S26 smartphones by $100, while Apple raised prices on its iPhone 18 lineup and also increased prices on some older models. Google had already raised prices across its Pixel 11 lineup by $100 when it introduced the phones in August, according to Bloomberg, offsetting some of the higher starting prices by including more storage in the base configurations. The Pixel 10a had been discounted to $424 last month, and Walmart still appeared to be selling the phone for $499, although supplies were limited.

South Korea September Exports Surge 83.5%, Trade Surplus Hits $49.85 Billion
South Korean exports grew far more than expected in September, rising 83.5% year-on-year in preliminary government data released Thursday, the fastest pace in nearly 50 years. The print blew past expectations of 61.7% and accelerated sharply from the 68.7% rise seen in the prior month. The export strength pushed South Korea's trade balance to a surplus of $49.85 billion, beating expectations of $38.20 billion. Imports also rose sharply, growing 26% in September against expectations of 21.5%, as the AI trade supported the local economy and higher oil and gas prices tied to the Middle East war added to import costs. Lynx Equity goes long on Micron ahead of Q4 earnings, sees $1,325 target as a floor
Lynx Equity Strategies is positioning long on Micron Technology ahead of the company's fiscal fourth-quarter earnings report, due today after the market close, with analyst KC Rajkumar forecasting revenue of $525 billion in calendar year 2028 at 80% gross margins. Rajkumar argues the Street has missed that Micron benefits from Meta's Muse agentic workloads, as AI demand shifts from token generation on GPU and XPU hardware to longer-running agentic tasks on CPUs, moving the memory center of gravity from GPU-attached HBM to CPU-attached lpDDR5x. He also contends that Samsung has chosen to prioritize elevated profitability over market share, keeping supply tight even as data-center demand visibility extends into 2029 and 2030, which reduces the risk of a supply glut in 2028 and 2029. Lynx maintains its $1,325 price target on Micron but says its conviction has strengthened and that significant upside remains, modeling calendar 2027 revenue of roughly $350 billion at an 85% gross margin and about $250 in earnings per share, then calendar 2028 revenue of $525 billion at an 80% gross margin and $325 in EPS. The firm reversed its stance from three months ago, when it stayed on the sidelines going into Micron's May quarter earnings call, and now expects management to extend demand visibility and confirm that the supply and demand imbalance persists into 2028 and beyond, which Rajkumar calls likely to be a catalyst for the stock to make fresh highs.

Socure Adds Mobile Driver's License Verification via Google and Samsung Wallets
Socure has launched U.S. mobile driver's license verification within DocV, its identity verification product, allowing organizations to cryptographically verify mDLs against the issuing state authority when presented from Google Wallet and Samsung Wallet during remote onboarding and step-up flows. The launch follows a September 8, 2026 joint FAQ from FinCEN, the Federal Reserve Board, the FDIC, the OCC and the NCUA confirming that an unexpired, government-issued verifiable digital credential can qualify as documentary evidence under the Customer Identification Program Rule, provided the institution has the technology to extract the required information and still forms a reasonable belief of the customer's true identity. ABI Research projects the U.S. mDL install base will grow from 21.7 million in 2025 to 143 million by 2030, with 40 states issuing digital licenses; today 21 states issue mDLs conforming to the ISO/IEC 18013-5 standard, more than 8 million credentials are active, and roughly 45% of Americans live where one is available. Socure said mDL verification complements its physical document capture rather than replacing it, and that its DocV now supports remote presentation under Part 7 of the ISO standard from Google Wallet and Samsung Wallet, addressing the higher-risk remote verifications that have been supported unevenly across wallets. The announcement comes alongside an extension of Socure's partnership with Xcelerate Solutions to support public sector use cases under the Login.gov Next Generation Identity Proofing Blanket Purchase Agreement, operating within Socure's FedRAMP Moderate environment.

New Apple CEO John Ternus Reportedly Plans Layoffs as Memory Chip Costs Rise
New Apple CEO John Ternus is reportedly planning layoffs and canceling projects, according to a Bloomberg report. The cuts would range from small-scale numbers within large teams, and could help offset pressure from rising memory chip costs. Apple issued cautious revenue guidance for the current quarter in late July, largely because it cannot source enough memory chips to meet demand, and services revenue fell quarter over quarter in June for the first time since 2022. On his final earnings call, former CEO Tim Cook said Apple reluctantly raised prices because the company is in what he characterized as a 100-year flood on memory pricing, with exponential increases in memory prices. The memory market has tightened as demand for high-bandwidth memory and advanced dynamic random-access memory used in AI servers outpaces supply, with SK Hynix, Samsung Electronics, and Micron largely sold out of premium AI memory capacity through much of 2026. Experts expect memory supply to remain constrained into 2027, and layoffs under Ternus could also prevent Apple from making more significant price hikes in 2027 should the shortage continue.

Bernstein Cuts SK Hynix Price Target to 2.7 Million Won, Keeps Outperform
Bernstein lowered its price target on SK Hynix to 2.7 million won from 3.3 million won while keeping an Outperform rating, citing more conservative assumptions on the progress and pricing of high-bandwidth memory. Analyst Mark Li said Samsung Electronics is set to gain HBM share, keeping his 440,000 won target on that stock, and wrote that the firm still prefers Samsung among the incumbent suppliers. Bernstein cut its 2027 HBM price assumptions after Korean export data for July and August showed strong signals for Samsung but weaker ones from SK Hynix's HBM production site, and continued reports of HBM4 supply difficulties led Li to push back slightly the shift from the current HBM3E generation; he now expects HBM to remain less profitable than conventional DRAM in 2027. The broader memory outlook stays firm, with Bernstein expecting conventional memory prices to rise by the mid-teens to 20% in the third quarter and by a high single digit in the fourth, shortages persisting into 2027, and prices normalizing in 2028 as supplier gross margins ease from a peak of about 90% to the high 70s. The firm kept its Outperform ratings on Micron and SanDisk, with targets of $1,300 and $3,000.

Costco Warns AI Memory Chip Inflation Is Squeezing Electronics Prices
Costco is absorbing low single-digit inflation across its merchandising categories, with the sharpest pressure coming from memory costs on consumer electronics tied to the AI boom. On the company's earnings call late Thursday, CFO Gary Millerchip said the increase was concentrated in non-foods, driven largely by memory costs on consumer electronics and oil-related items. Those pressured consumer electronics margins dragged Costco's gross profit margin down to 11.01% in the fiscal fourth quarter from 11.12% a year earlier. The memory chip market has tightened as demand for high-bandwidth memory and advanced dynamic random-access memory used in AI servers outpaces supply, and suppliers including SK Hynix, Samsung Electronics and Micron have largely sold out their premium AI memory capacity through much of 2026 as customers such as Nvidia, Microsoft, Amazon and Meta race to build AI infrastructure. Experts expect memory supply to remain constrained into 2027, a favorable backdrop for the industry's largest producers such as Micron and Sandisk. Costco still posted a solid quarter, with total sales up 11.1% from the prior year to $95.72 billion, total comparable store sales up 9.4% and online sales up 19.5%, and Jefferies analyst Corey Tarlowe said the company remains one of retail's highest quality long-term compounders.
TSMC to Raise Wafer Prices 3% to 6% Starting in 2027
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing plans to raise wafer foundry prices by 3% to 6% starting in 2027, with the largest increases targeted at advanced process nodes used in high performance computing and AI chips. Management is preparing the multi-year pricing update as capacity remains tight for AI-related demand and advanced packaging through 2030. The move is intended to give the company more room to earn a return on heavy spending for 2nm and other advanced facilities, tilting its foundry model further toward higher-value capacity rather than pure volume. Raising prices first can signal confidence in tight supply, but it also invites Samsung and Intel to adjust their own pricing, and any meaningful discount or aggressive incentives from rivals could pull future AI programs or advanced packaging work away. The key test for investors is whether customers lock in multi-year agreements through 2027 at the higher wafer rates, especially on 2nm and related advanced nodes, with disclosed capacity commitments, utilization data around those leading processes, and management commentary on pricing discipline as the metrics to track.
Apple Unveils First Foldable iPhone Duo at $1,999 Under CEO John Ternus
Apple unveiled its first foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro lineup at its first major product event under CEO John Ternus, putting Siri and on-device artificial intelligence at the center of its pitch. The passport-shaped Duo opens into a 7.6-inch inner display with a 5.4-inch outer screen, runs on Apple's new A20 Pro chip, and starts at $1,999, below the more than $2,500 analysts had anticipated and roughly $100 above Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8 at $1,899. Ternus positioned privacy as a key differentiator, describing the iPhone as an intelligent personal hub that handles AI services on-device whenever possible, with Private Cloud Compute used when cloud processing is required; Siri AI has begun rolling out in beta and will work with more than 300,000 apps at launch, though it will not initially be available in the European Union on iOS, iPadOS and watchOS, or in China pending regulatory requirements. Apple enters foldables years after Samsung, which launched its first mass-market foldable in 2019 and has released eight generations since, and the category still accounts for a single-digit share of the overall smartphone market, according to IDC's Nabila Popal, who estimated Apple's foldable could generate more than $45 billion in revenue by the end of 2027. The Duo goes on sale October 23, when investors will begin to see how consumers respond to Apple's entry into the category.

Samsung Rises 3.3% as CXMT Launches Fifth-Generation DRAM
Samsung Electronics shares rose 3.25% to 285,500 won as Chinese rival CXMT began producing its fifth-generation DRAM platform, according to CXMT's announcement. CXMT has launched two 24-gigabit LPDDR5X products, giving them 50% more capacity than its previous versions, and claims its latest manufacturing process produces at least 50% more gross dies per wafer than the prior generation, though that comparison excludes final production yields. The pressure is most serious in commodity memory, where extra supply can quickly squeeze prices and margins, while Samsung's high-bandwidth memory business has greater protection because advanced packaging and customer qualification create higher barriers to entry. Samsung's GF Score of 84 out of 100 points to strong profitability, growth and financial strength, though weaker value and only moderate momentum remain visible. A downturn in conventional memory profits could limit the cash Samsung can deploy in the expensive race to lead AI memory.

With rate fears now priced in after the Fed and a pivot toward a risk-on, agentic AI theme, he sees the setup maturing for an institutional-led breakout above the 7,000-to-7,200 zone. Cha pointed to strong momentum in memory chips, with fourth-quarter DRAM contract prices projected to rise by double digits quarter-on-quarter, and noted Samsung Electronics' 30 trillion won third-quarter dividend is driving buying ahead of its record date, with further payouts and buybacks offering a 5% to 7% yield backstop into year-end. He cautioned about two October headwinds, Samsung's ex-dividend date on Sept. 29 and a buyback expiration cliff, after which the KOSPI's trajectory would depend entirely on foreign institutional buying.

Micron's AI Memory Boom Faces Test as New Capacity Looms
Micron Technology is riding an AI-driven memory boom, with last quarter's sales hitting $41.46 billion, up dramatically from $9.3 billion a year earlier, and GAAP net income of $28.24 billion. The key question now is whether that boom can be sustained or whether added output will create excess supply and pressure pricing. Investor Millennial Dividends says low finished inventories at Samsung and SK Hynix point to roughly 70% of memory manufactured in 2026 going to data centers, and believes the three big providers of DRAM and HBM have sold all their capacity until next year, which could keep the memory market tight as AI infrastructure grows. The investor calls the combination of strong data-center demand and new capacity coming online a tailwind to additional earnings growth, adding that Micron isn't demanding on a fiscal 2027 value. Wall Street currently has 29 Buy recommendations and one Hold, with an average 12-month price goal of $1,564.44. The next driver is whether Micron can keep pricing power as new memory capacity is added and AI demand continues to swallow supply.

MFC launches M-GMEMORY fund investing in global memory chip leaders
MFC Asset Management Public Company Limited, or MFC, has launched the MFC Global Memory Chip Equity Fund (M-GMEMORY) to give investors access to the growth of the global memory chip industry. The fund invests in units of the Amundi Global Memory Chips UCITS ETF Acc as its master fund, averaging no less than 80% of NAV per fiscal year, and will hold its initial public offering from September 22 to 25, 2026, with a minimum investment of 1,000 baht. The master fund aims to track the performance of the Solactive Global Memory Chips Index, which covers large, mid and small cap stocks in both developed and emerging markets, including companies tied to the memory supply chain, with roughly 40 companies in the portfolio as of August 31, 2026. Thanachot Rungsitthiwat, Managing Director of MFC, said the growth of Generative AI and AI data centers is a key driver pushing demand for memory chips to record highs, especially High Bandwidth Memory, or HBM, which offers 20 times the bandwidth of traditional DRAM. As a result, global manufacturers are shifting DRAM production capacity toward HBM, raising it from just 2% in 2020 to 25% in 2026, while DRAM memory prices have risen by as much as about five times since 2025. The HBM market is concentrated among three main players: SK hynix holds the largest share at about 50%, followed by Samsung at 40% and Micron at 10%.
