An AI chip isn't born from one print run. It's a single GPU that has to sit right up against several stacks of HBM memory on a tiny silicon sheet called an interposer, all assembled into one package. That step is called CoWoS, and only one factory in the world can do it at that level: TSMC. Today, AI-chip demand isn't stuck on NVIDIA's design — it's stuck because TSMC can't build CoWoS fast enough. This lesson goes to the deepest layer: who actually "makes" and "assembles" AI chips, and why assembly capacity is the true bottleneck of the whole AI boom.

AI demand drives record foundry sales and new US packaging supply
▲
TSMC's record Q3 confirms AI demand still outruns supply TSMC's Q3 revenue jumped 50% to a record NT$1.49 trillion, beating guidance and market estimates, with advanced 7nm-and-below chips at 77% of wafer revenue. This locks in years of leading-edge wafer and packaging work and shows the foundry leader's pricing power remains intact.
It is the period's biggest new hard number and directly answers what is driving the theme.
GlobalFoundries-TSMC deal creates first US silicon interposer source GlobalFoundries signed a $2 billion, five-year agreement with TSMC to make silicon interposers at its New York plant, the key part that connects AI chips to memory in advanced packaging. Volume production starts in 2028, adding US packaging supply and easing a major bottleneck.
It is a concrete new supply-chain fix for the advanced packaging sub-area.
Amkor and industry lift packaging investment as AI demand broadens Amkor raised 2026 capital spending to $2.5-$3 billion on AI packaging demand, with utilization up from the 50s to the 70s and computing revenue at a record. Global chip sales topped $1 trillion for the first time, and Samsung posted a record $80 billion quarter, showing the AI buildout is widening beyond Nvidia.
It shows the packaging and broader chip demand side expanding, not just TSMC.
Musk's Terafab and glass substrates reshape the map, but slowly Tesla and SpaceX committed $16.8 billion to a Texas chip complex using Intel's 14A process, targeting 2029 production and eventually 1 million wafers a month. Separately, Nvidia is pushing glass substrate packaging while TSMC's CoPoS mass production slipped to 2028, a reminder that next-generation packaging timelines keep moving.
It is the period's main new long-term supply and technology shift, with real timing risk.
GlobalFoundries Unveils FDX Fusion Physical AI Platform in Dresden
GlobalFoundries announced FDX Fusion, a next-generation FD-SOI platform to be developed and manufactured in Dresden for highly integrated, energy-efficient Physical AI chips spanning sensing, compute, control and connectivity functions. The platform blends seven nanometer class digital performance with advanced RF, analog and embedded memory on a single chip aimed at edge and automotive, industrial and consumer AI systems. The launch fits GlobalFoundries' broader shift away from weaker smart mobile demand toward automotive, industrial, communications and AI applications, though it does not immediately change the near term risk that higher investment and oversubscribed niches like SiGe could still coexist with only high 80s percent fab utilization. Among recent announcements, a US$2 billion, five year silicon interposer deal with TSMC reinforces GlobalFoundries' role in AI hardware supply alongside FDX Fusion, with the Dresden FDX roadmap and Malta advanced packaging capacity sitting squarely against the key catalyst of moving its revenue mix toward higher value, AI linked processes. GlobalFoundries' narrative projects $10.4 billion revenue and $1.7 billion earnings by 2029, requiring 14.5% yearly revenue growth and a roughly $1.0 billion earnings increase from $716.0 million today, while the most optimistic analysts already assumed about US$11.7 billion of revenue and US$2.3 billion of earnings by 2029.
TSMC Posts Record Q3 2026 Revenue on AI Chip Demand
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing reported record Q3 2026 revenue of about NT$1.49t, with September alone at NT$511.86b, driven by demand for chips used in AI workloads. Management highlighted advanced packaging services for AI accelerators as a key contributor to the quarter, and said leading edge capacity is fully booked through 2026. TSMC also agreed a multi year, US$2b silicon interposer supply arrangement with GlobalFoundries that includes the first U.S.-based silicon interposer production for its packaging, extending its CoWoS packaging supply chain into the United States and spreading manufacturing risk. The company is supporting a US$64b capex plan, and investors will watch whether it can ease advanced packaging constraints and how much of that spend translates into stable utilization and revenue progress through and after the Malta ramp toward 2028.
BOE Technology Responds: Mass Production of Glass-Based Packaging Substrates Requires New Production Line Investment

ASPS says falling bond yields support short-term SET recovery, highlights 5 standout stocks ahead of IMF-World Bank meetings
Asia Plus Securities, or ASPS, assesses that the Thai stock market has a chance of a temporary short-term recovery, supported by the yield on 10-year US government bonds falling from 5.34% to 5.23%, together with the WTI crude oil price easing to near 91 US dollars per barrel after President Donald Trump signalled that he would not yet take military action against Iran before the midterm elections on 3 November 2026. Meanwhile, the auction of 22 billion US dollars of 30-year US government bonds drew strong interest, with a bid-to-cover ratio as high as 2.54 times, above the historical average of 2.41 times. However, ASPS still advises investors to be cautious about long-term volatility, because senior Federal Reserve officials are still signalling a tight monetary policy stance to bring inflation down to the 2% target. It expects US September CPI inflation to rise to plus 3.6% year on year, from plus 3.4% in the previous month. On the AI hardware stock front, the sector faced short-term profit-taking, led by CoreWeave down 8%, Oracle down 6%, and Nvidia down 2.9%, after OpenAI reported annual revenue at the end of September of about 50 billion US dollars, below the market expectation of 68 billion US dollars, and cancelled the launch plan for its GPT-6.1 Astra model and slowed its plan to list the company on the stock exchange. Meanwhile, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, or TSMC, reported record-high third-quarter 2026 revenue of 1.49 trillion Taiwan dollars, above the market expectation of 1.46 trillion Taiwan dollars, driven by demand for advanced chips for AI-processing GPUs and CPUs, along with plans to raise chip production prices next year. As for the Thai stock index, it most recently fell 14 points, or 0.88%, to 1,570.61 points, pressured by the transport and logistics group, which dropped 2.80% after news of preparations to collect three tourist fees and taxes totalling 2,570 baht, combined with concerns over the September consumer confidence index, which fell for the first time in four months amid the flood crisis and diesel prices surging above 40 baht per litre. ASPS recommends a strategy of catching a relief rally in domestic play, tourism, and healthcare stocks, with five standout picks: DISNEY19, which is entering the high season for fourth-quarter earnings on the buzz around the blockbuster film Avengers: Doomsday; AAPL80, which benefits from the upcoming launch of its first foldable-screen smartphone; Bangkok Expressway and Metro Public Company Limited, or BEM, which has a high chance of winning the contract to operate the southern Purple Line electric train, combined with third-quarter 2026 earnings that are expected to hit the year's peak; Com Seven Public Company Limited, or COM7, whose third-quarter 2026 profit is expected to grow more than 30% year on year; and Bangkok Chain Hospital Public Company Limited, or BCH, whose second-half revenue from foreign patients is trending strongly higher, led by patients from the Middle East, particularly the United Arab Emirates.

Amkor Lifts 2026 CapEx to $2.5-$3 Billion on AI Packaging Demand
Amkor Technology is sharply increasing capital spending to capture growth in advanced packaging, AI and data-center applications, with first-half 2026 capital expenditures of $688.4 million, up from $226.1 million a year earlier, and full-year 2026 CapEx guidance of $2.5-$3 billion. Most of that spending is targeted at facility expansion, including Arizona, while the remainder goes toward HDFO, test and other advanced packaging capacity. The investment is supported by improving demand: second-quarter revenues rose 26% year over year to $1.90 billion, gross margin expanded to 16.8% from 12%, factory utilization improved from the 50s into the 70s, and computing revenues hit a record, up 20% sequentially and expected to accelerate to nearly 30% in the third quarter on AI data center demand and the HDFO CPU ramp. Amkor's capital-intensive model carries risks, since new capacity adds depreciation and fixed costs, the company generally has limited backlog and sometimes invests without firm customer commitments, and customer-specific equipment may be hard to reuse if demand weakens; as of June 30 it also had $2.5 billion of debt and $1.47 billion of purchase obligations. Competition is intensifying, with Intel raising 2026 CapEx above $20 billion including packaging and targeting high-volume EMIB-T customer ramps in 2027, while GlobalFoundries expects 2026 CapEx at the high end of its 15%-20% range as it expands silicon photonics and advanced packaging capacity. The Zacks Consensus Estimate projects 2026 and 2027 revenues of $7.64 billion and $8.55 billion, respectively, and 2026 earnings of $2.60 per share, implying 73.3% year-over-year growth.

Taiwan Stocks Surge 72%, Overtaking South Korea as World's Hottest Market on AI Wave
Taiwan's stock market is emerging as a more compelling choice than South Korea's for investors looking to ride the artificial intelligence wave in the final stretch of 2026, after growth in the AI industry began spreading from chipmakers to other businesses across the supply chain. Taiwan's Taiex index has jumped roughly 72% since the start of 2026, the highest among more than 90 global equity indexes tracked by Bloomberg, while South Korea's KOSPI has gained about 63%, ranking second. In the third quarter, the Taiex outperformed the KOSPI by about 23 percentage points, the widest gap since the early 2000s, and earnings estimate upgrades for Taiwanese listed companies outpaced South Korea's for the first time since March 2025. Earnings estimates for companies in the Taiex were revised up by about 19% in the quarter ending in September, compared with an increase of about 15% for KOSPI companies. A Bank of America fund manager survey in September found that about 40% of respondents said they were overweight Taiwanese stocks relative to the benchmark, compared with 25% who held the same view on South Korean stocks. In the survey of 87 fund managers overseeing a combined 211 billion dollars in assets, 35% said Taiwan would be the Asian stock market to benefit most from AI going forward, while only 5% chose South Korea. A key factor is Taiwan's industrial structure, which is linked to the AI supply chain at many levels, from semiconductor design and manufacturing to chip packaging, networking systems and servers. South Korea's market, by contrast, still relies on just a few large chipmakers, particularly Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, which fell between 19% and 33% in the three months ending in September after six straight quarters of gains. Societe Generale continues to favour Taiwanese stocks over South Korean ones, expecting the rise in memory chip prices to slow over the coming quarters before returning to normal in 2028 amid growing competition from Chinese producers. However, Peter Lee, a managing director at Citigroup, believes investors should start accumulating shares such as Samsung and SK Hynix, because the market may be underestimating demand for high-bandwidth memory chips, or HBM, in 2027. On valuations, Taiwan's market trades at about 18 times forward 12-month earnings estimates, above the KOSPI's roughly 5.5 times. And Taiwan's rally is not confined to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. alone. TSMC shares rose 2.9% in the quarter ending in September, their sixth straight quarterly gain, while about 10% of stocks in the Taiex have at least doubled since the start of the year, compared with just 4.1% of KOSPI stocks and 5.7% of stocks in Japan's Nikkei 225.

TSMC is considering building a new chip manufacturing plant in Texas, with expectations of adding several tens of billions of dollars in investment under a multi-year plan to expand its chipmaking business in the United States. Sources say the Texas project covers the construction of multiple chip plants, and if the investment goes ahead, each plant would cost at least 20 billion dollars. Previously, TSMC pledged to invest 265 billion dollars in Arizona, where several plants are currently under construction. The Texas investment depends on whether the U.S. government extends a tax credit measure for advanced manufacturing that is set to expire at the end of this year. The plan is still at an early stage and no details have been officially disclosed. TSMC is a key chip supplier to Nvidia and Apple, with revenue from wafer manufacturing in America accounting for more than 75% of its revenue from that business this year.
