US Vice President JD Vance has called for an investigation into nine leading American universities amid suspicions of fraud in the use of J-1 visas to bring foreigners in to work, which may suppress wages and reduce job opportunities for Americans. The nine universities that should be investigated include Harvard University, Yale University, Stanford University, Brown University, the University of Pittsburgh, the University of California, Davis, the California Institute of Technology, Arizona State University, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, or MIT. Vance said something abnormal is happening at these universities, and the excessive use of this type of visa to suppress the wages of American graduate students and researchers must end. Meanwhile, US Deputy Secretary of Labor Keith Sonderling said the department is suspending the eligibility of six major global IT staffing companies from the program that certifies the employment of foreign workers for employer-sponsored green cards, known as PERM. They are Cognizant, Infosys, Tata Consultancy Services, Wipro, HCLTech, and Capgemini. The department is also suspending Microsoft and Adobe from the program, as both companies are under multiple federal investigations. Sonderling stated that since 2009, these companies have filed requests to hire nearly 3 million foreign workers, obtaining more than 230,000 H-1B visas and more than 100,000 permanent labor certifications.
