Kia's US sales records and hybrid surge drive growth

  • Record US sales and hybrid demand Kia set an all-time monthly US sales record in August, with hybrid sales up 99% and electrified models up 36%. September hybrids jumped 152%, showing strong demand for fuel-efficient vehicles. This boosts revenue and profit, pushing the stock up.

This point highlights the core demand strength that directly lifts Kia's sales and earnings.

  • Telluride redesign with hybrid option Kia redesigned its popular Telluride SUV, adding a hybrid powertrain and upscale features. The Telluride had its best first half ever, with US sales up 20%. This strengthens Kia's profitable SUV lineup and attracts buyers, supporting the stock.

The Telluride is a key model, and its redesign with hybrid power addresses demand trends, driving future sales.

  • Competitive gains from Mexico tariff impact Mexico's auto exports fell 12% in September due to US tariffs, while Kia increased exports and filled the gap. This allows Kia to capture market share from rivals like GM and Ford, boosting sales and investor confidence.

This point shows how tariff-related disruptions benefit Kia competitively, positively impacting its market position.

  • New model pricing enhances appeal Kia announced pricing for the 2027 Sportage and all-new EV3, with the EV3 starting at $29,890 as the most affordable EV. Competitive pricing with added features makes Kia vehicles more attractive, supporting demand and pricing power.

Pricing strategy for new models directly influences consumer adoption and Kia's sales outlook.

Mexico's Auto Exports Fall 12% in September on U.S. Tariff Impact

Mexico's auto export volumes fell 12% year-on-year in September, the largest drop since December 2025, according to data released on the 8th by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography. Analysts attribute the decline to the impact of tariff policies imposed by the United States, Mexico's largest market. Monthly production fell 15%, while domestic sales rose 8%, helping to cushion the blow to the auto manufacturing industry, the country's largest industrial sector. Government officials are pushing ahead with a review of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, and Mexican-made vehicles are still subject to a 25% tariff even as negotiations continue. Mexican authorities estimate that the burden would be reduced to 10-12% if rules requiring the use of North American parts are complied with. Janet Quiroz, director of economic analysis at brokerage Monex, noted that "the September data is more a warning sign than a sign of crisis. If this trend continues through 2027, we may be discussing a more structural problem for Mexican manufacturing." U.S. auto giant General Motors announced last year a $4 billion investment plan to shift some production from Mexico to the United States in response to volatile tariff policy. Along with General Motors, Ford Motor and Nissan also saw sharp declines in exports in September, while South Korea's Kia, Germany's BMW and Mazda increased exports and filled the gap. Mazda in particular more than doubled its exports year-on-year. Mercedes-Benz closed its joint venture plant with Nissan last May, and in September recorded zero production and zero exports for the first time since it began overseas shipments eight years ago. The Mexican Automotive Industry Association stressed at a press conference on the 8th that Mexico remains the largest foreign supplier of automobiles to the United States. According to the association's data, exports to the United States fell 5% in the January-September period of 2026, while exports to Canada, Mexico's second-largest market, rose by just over 9%.

Cars.com Report Finds Hybrid Demand Outpacing Supply as Gas Prices Climb

Hybrid shopper interest is running at roughly double the share of hybrids on dealer lots, according to new data from Cars.com. In its latest report, Cars.com said 25% of surveyed shoppers named a hybrid as the powertrain they're most seriously considering, while hybrids make up only about one in eight new listings; the survey of 648 recent car buyers and shoppers was fielded from July 31 to Aug. 6. The mismatch is showing up in how fast the cars sell, with days on the lot for new hybrids falling to 46 in August, down 10% from a year ago, while new hybrid supply grew just 1%, and new vehicles overall sat for 73 days, up from 70 a year earlier. The shopper data lines up with automaker results, as Hyundai said its hybrid sales rose 39% in September and 35% in the third quarter, both records, with hybrids accounting for 28% of September volume, while sister brand Kia said its hybrid sales jumped 152% in September and Toyota North America reported its electrified vehicle sales, which include hybrids and EVs, jumped 29% in Q3 as overall volume climbed only 0.6%. Cars.com points to pump prices as one driver, with gas averaging $4.19 a gallon in August and Energy Information Administration data showing the national average at $4.46 by mid-September, and lead analyst Peter Hoang wrote that with gas prices climbing again, hybrids look positioned to keep benefiting from shoppers hedging against pump prices without fully committing to an EV. The findings come as the EV market enters its first year without federal tax credits, after the $7,500 federal EV tax credit expired on Sept. 30, 2025, with days on lot for new EVs falling to 93 in August, the fifth straight monthly improvement, but still double the time for hybrids, and average new-EV prices falling 11% from a year ago to $57,046.

SoundHound AI Rolls Out Kia Sorento Voice AI in India and Debuts OASYS Edge

SoundHound AI has rolled out its voice and generative AI in the Kia Sorento in India and unveiled OASYS Edge, an embedded architecture that brings LLM-powered voice agents directly to vehicles and smart devices with on-device processing and privacy by default. The launches come alongside record quarterly revenue growth and a higher full-year revenue outlook, which the company says highlight its push to become a broad, embedded conversational AI platform across high-volume global markets. SoundHound AI's narrative projects $463.8 million in revenue and $54.4 million in earnings by 2029, requiring 31.7% yearly revenue growth and a $191.2 million earnings increase from -$136.8 million today, and yields a $12.57 fair value, a 115% upside to its current price. Some of the lowest estimate analysts assume roughly 35 percent annual revenue growth to around US$502 million by 2029 and no profits, even as OASYS Edge and the Kia Sorento launch in India could eventually challenge those assumptions. The company still faces high operating costs and ongoing net losses if revenue growth or large deals become less reliable.

Cox Forecasts Sharp Decline in GM and Ford's US Market Share

Cox Automotive, a major US automotive services company, announced on the 24th that it forecasts General Motors and Ford Motor will see the largest declines in US market share in the first through third quarters among the 13 automakers surveyed. Ford's year-to-date cumulative sales are down 8.8% from the same period last year, and its share is expected to fall by nearly 1 percentage point from a year earlier to 12.5%, while GM's sales are seen down 6.2% and its share dropping from 17.4% to 16.7%. Meanwhile, Stellantis, the other member of the US Big Three, is projected to gain share, but the combined share of the three companies is expected to remain at about 36%, a record low. Analysts point out that GM and Ford are being hurt by a relative shortage of fuel-efficient passenger cars and SUVs compared with competitors, and that automakers offering multiple hybrid models are posting relatively solid results this year amid high gasoline prices. Combined sales of South Korea's Hyundai Motor and its affiliate Kia are expected to surpass Ford in the third quarter, marking the first time they have topped Ford on a quarterly basis.

Boston Dynamics Opens Robotics Center at Hyundai Georgia EV Plant

Boston Dynamics officially opened its Robotics Metaplant Application Center at Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America outside Savannah, Georgia on Monday, transitioning from pilot operations that began in June to full-scale operations. The center serves as a test bed and training center for integrating Atlas humanoids across Hyundai's automotive factories, with Boston Dynamics training the robots to take over repetitive parts sequencing and heavy-lifting tasks over the next few years and component assembly by 2030. Boston Dynamics, which became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hyundai in July, said it plans to begin exploring use cases for Atlas in other industry sectors next year, and will move into a new building at the Georgia site that will make its test bed and training center 10 times its current size. The center is a key part of Hyundai's larger strategy unveiled in January to restructure its manufacturing environments for humans to work safely alongside robots; Hyundai initially plans to deploy 25,000 Atlas units across its global plants, including Kia factories, over the next few years, and will establish a U.S. facility capable of producing 30,000 robots per year, with a location not disclosed. Separately, the Toyota Group aims to deploy close to 400,000 robots to update its aging factories and supplier network, starting in 2028 with 150,000 units across Toyota Motor Corp. and the Toyota Group plus 250,000 units at various suppliers, a total that includes replacement of existing robots and new units such as humanoids; Toyota's factory automation efforts could cost up to $6.4 billion per year, according to Reuters.

Hybrids to Reach 34% of US Market by 2030, Analyst Says, Lifting Auto ETFs

Automotive analyst John Murphy has predicted hybrids will account for 34% of the U.S. market by 2030, up from just over 18% in 2026, a shift that could redirect investor attention from speculative EV startups to established automakers and the automotive ETFs holding them. Hybrid electric vehicles reached a record 16% of light-duty vehicle sales in the second quarter of 2026, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, while battery electric vehicles saw their market share decline to 6% from 7% the previous year. Toyota, Honda and Hyundai Motor Group currently control 86% of the surging U.S. hybrid market, according to Baum & Associates data cited by CNBC, with Toyota selling over 600,000 hybrids in the United States in the first half of 2026 for a 50% market share and Honda's hybrids now accounting for 31% of American Honda's total sales. The shift has been driven by the expiration of the federal $7,500 EV tax credit in September 2025, which raised the cost of pure EVs by thousands of dollars overnight, and by hybrid pricing that has dropped considerably, with Toyota, Honda, Ford, Hyundai and Kia pushing hybrid variants into their most popular mainstream models at a modest upcharge of $1,500-$2,000. Among the funds positioned for the trend, the Global X Autonomous & Electric Vehicles ETF DRIV, with net assets of $359.2 million, has gained 12.3% year to date and charges 68 basis points, while the First Trust S-Network Future Vehicles & Technology ETF CARZ, with net assets of $46.7 million, has rallied 33% year to date and charges 70 basis points, and the State Street SPDR S&P Kensho Smart Mobility ETF HAIL, with assets under management of $18 million, has risen 3.7% year to date and charges 45 basis points.

Kia and Hyundai Face $1 Billion Insurer Lawsuit After 9th Circuit Ruling

A federal appeals court has revived a lawsuit in which some 200 U.S. car insurance companies are seeking more than $1 billion in reimbursement from Kia and Hyundai over thefts of their easy-to-steal vehicles. The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled Monday that the insurers can sue the Korean automakers, reversing U.S. District Judge James V. Selna, who had dismissed the complaint after finding his Santa Ana court lacked jurisdiction over the foreign manufacturers. The appellate panel found the companies intentionally reserved engine immobilizers as an upsell for American buyers, and that because more than 70% of all Hyundai and Kia shipments to the U.S. passed through California ports, the vast majority of vehicles built without working immobilizers were targeted to the state. The ruling is the latest legal blow to the automakers, which have already settled a $145-million class-action suit with car buyers and a $9-million case brought by state attorneys general. The case now returns to Selna's court in Orange County, as a new UCLA study projects elevated thefts of the vulnerable models in Los Angeles through 2042.

Hyundai Motor Group Puts Data Flywheel Into Full Operation, Targets Level 2++ Autonomy by 2028

Hyundai Motor Group announced it has put its Data Flywheel into full operation, a system creating a virtuous cycle of data collection, AI training, validation and deployment to accelerate autonomous driving development. At its HMG Autonomous Driving Media Day at 42dot headquarters in Gyeonggi Province, Korea, the Group outlined a Dual-Track strategy that pairs NVIDIA solutions-based Level 2+ production targeted for the first half of 2028 and Level 2++ in the second half of 2028, followed by Atria AI-powered Level 2++ vehicles in the second half of 2029. The Group is pursuing progressive sensor standardization across Hyundai Motor, Kia, 42dot and Motional, and is expanding its data ecosystem by leveraging annual sales of 7 million vehicles and its Data Union framework, with a data-centric development framework based on hard example mining, continuous training and SER. A real-world Level 4 pilot will launch in Gwangju by year-end in partnership with Korea's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport to secure large-scale validation data, while 42dot shared its Vision-Language-Action autonomous driving technology, which integrates visual information and language-based reasoning to guide driving decisions and address edge cases alongside parallel end-to-end autonomy development. Minwoo Park, President and Head of Advanced Vehicle Platform Division at Hyundai Motor Group and CEO of 42dot, said autonomous driving competitiveness now comes down to how much data a company secures, how quickly it learns and how effectively those results reach products and services.

Kia Redesigns Telluride With Hybrid Power and Range Rover Looks

Kia has given its most popular model, the Telluride, a redesign from the ground up, and Yahoo Finance Senior Autos Reporter Pras Subramanian got a firsthand look at the new three-row flagship SUV. Subramanian described the new Telluride as having an imposing, brutish exterior with a blacked-out front end and a rear that resembles a Range Rover, calling it the Brooklyn Range Rover, with near-luxury levels of comfort inside including synthetic suede seats and good electronics. The new model adds a four-cylinder hybrid engine producing around 330 horsepower, which Subramanian said is good but not great for a vehicle that big, with the trade-off being fuel economy of around 31 miles per gallon and even better in city driving. The high-end SX Prestige trim he tested was priced at $60,000, while the base model starts at $40,000, up from $35,000 when the Telluride first launched in 2019. Subramanian said the Telluride stands out for Kia because it gives Americans the larger footprint they want, with two captain's chairs in the middle row, and that it offers looks, value and a bit of cachet the brand did not used to have.

UK August New Car Sales: EVs Lead Market with 30% Growth

According to data from research firm New Automotive, registrations of new battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in the UK in August rose by approximately 30% year-on-year, making them the largest fuel type in the market. Total new car registrations increased by 17.5% to 93,977 units, of which BEVs accounted for 27,876 units, representing a market share of about 30%. Hybrid vehicles held a share of about 29%, while petrol cars accounted for about 21.5%. Amid a global oil shock due to the situation in Iran, which has driven up fuel costs, customers are turning to alternatives, accelerating EV adoption in Europe. Ben Nelmes, CEO of New Automotive, said that while policymakers and lobbyists debate the details of the ZEV mandate, the industry is working hard to supply EVs and electric light commercial vehicles, for which consumer demand is rising. By manufacturer, US EV giant Tesla led with an 8.8% market share year-to-date, followed by South Korea's Kia at 6.7%, and China's BYD at 6.4%. Kia maintained its position as the leader in new BEV registrations for the second consecutive month.

Hyundai considers expanding Georgia Metaplant to 800,000 units

Hyundai Motor is considering expanding production capacity at its Georgia assembly plant from 500,000 vehicles annually to between 700,000 and 800,000 units by 2028, CEO José Muñoz told CNBC on Thursday. The South Korean automaker said following publication of the interview that the plans are under consideration but not yet confirmed. At the upper end of that range, the Georgia Metaplant would leapfrog rivals including Tesla and Toyota Motor to claim the top spot among U.S. vehicle assembly plants measured by capacity. Muñoz said President Donald Trump's tariffs, including a 15% levy on imports from South Korea, have accelerated the company's localization plans. Any such expansion would be funded through Hyundai's already-announced $26 billion U.S. investment commitment running to 2028. Hyundai has targeted a domestic production share of at least 80% of the vehicles it moves in the U.S. market by 2030, compared with roughly 40% in 2024. The $7.6 billion Metaplant, which Hyundai first announced in 2022, is currently turning out the all-electric Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 9 models alongside the Kia Sportage hybrid. Under the existing 500,000-unit framework, the Georgia campus would employ upward of 8,500 people directly, with a further 6,900 positions supported at supplier facilities nearby. Hyundai is also evaluating additional investment for body-on-frame vehicles such as trucks and SUVs at a location separate from the Georgia plant, though Muñoz declined to provide further details.

Hyundai Motor Union Stages First Full Strike in 10 Years, Demands Job Protection from AI

Hyundai Motor's labor union in South Korea staged its first full strike in 10 years on the 21st, demanding an extension of the retirement age and protection of jobs from artificial intelligence and automation. Strike participants from Hyundai Motor, its affiliate Kia, and parts companies gathered in front of Hyundai Motor's headquarters in Seoul wearing red headbands, calling for parts companies to be allowed to negotiate wages directly with automakers and for the current retirement age of 60 to be raised. According to union officials, about 40,000 Hyundai Motor union members were expected to take part in the one-day strike. Hyundai Motor, which owns the humanoid robot maker Boston Dynamics, has announced plans to introduce humanoid robots at its plant in the U.S. state of Georgia starting in 2028 and then expand their use to production sites elsewhere. Union leaders pointed out that AI could pose a threat not only to production jobs but also to research and technical positions. Hyundai Motor indicated it is committed to resolving the issue through dialogue, saying in a statement that the strike could affect customers, business partners, and operations, and that this is a critical time when labor and management must work together to navigate the global transition to future mobility.

California's EV rebate exempts Tesla and Lucid from price cap

California's new MyFirstEV instant rebate program exempts automakers headquartered in the state that build only zero-emission vehicles from its $50,000 MSRP cap, effectively allowing Tesla and Lucid to qualify for the $3,500 incentive on vehicles priced well above that limit while competitors must comply. The program, announced by Governor Gavin Newsom on August 7, offers $3,500 off a new zero-emission vehicle and $1,750 off a used one at the point of sale, funded by $135.5 million from California Climate Investments' cap-and-trade revenue matched by participating automakers for a total $271 million pot. CARB's own FAQ states the program was created because the expiration of the $7,500 federal EV tax credit in September 2025 caused new ZEV registrations in California to drop 40.2% year over year in the first quarter of 2026. The price-cap exemption applies to any manufacturer headquartered in California that builds only zero-emission vehicles, which currently includes Tesla and Lucid and will include Rivian once it joins, while Hyundai, Kia, and others must stay under the $50,000 threshold. The rollout is staggered because CARB signs individual grant agreements with each automaker, who must front the discount and build point-of-sale systems, with Tesla, Hyundai, and Lucid going live first and Nissan and Volvo yet to commit to a date.

Kia Corp. sales climbed more than 4% from January to May even as global auto demand fell about 5%, pushing its global market share above 4%. Chief Executive Officer Song Ho-sung said at the Busan Mobility Show that surging gasoline prices during the Iran war are lifting demand for electric vehicles in Europe and hybrids in the US. In Europe, Kia's sales jumped more than 10% in May, supported by a broader rollout of mass-market EV models. In the US, Kia is expanding hybrid models, including the Telluride large SUV, and targeting eight hybrid models by 2030. BYD Plans Europe Launch for Great Tang SUV After 150,000 Orders

BYD is preparing to bring its all-electric Great Tang SUV to Europe as early as the end of this year or early 2027. The seven-seat model has secured more than 150,000 orders since its debut at the Beijing Auto Show in April, including 100,000 bookings during its first two-week presale period. Stella Li, BYD's executive vice president and head of global expansion, said Europe and Asia-Pacific are both slated to receive the vehicle, which is priced at about $35,500 in China. Deutsche Bank has pointed to the Great Tang's strong presale momentum and flash-charging technology as possible advantages, while projecting sales of 10,000 units per month. The move could add more pressure on European automakers as Chinese brands continue gaining share, with Chinese carmakers accounting for 15% of Europe's EV sales in April and nearly 10% of overall unit volume.

Insureworks analysis reveals Tesla EVs hold their value best in 2026

New research from Insureworks shows Tesla electric vehicles retain the most value among popular EV brands in the UK. The analysis compared original recommended retail prices against current used market prices for 2025, 2024 and 2023 models, estimating value retained after one, two and three years. Tesla's Model 3 and Model Y retained an average of 64.9 percent of their original value, equating to an average cash loss of £17,367. Audi's Q4 e-tron followed with 63.1 percent value retention and an average cash loss of £19,775, while BMW, Hyundai and Kia each held onto more than 55 percent on average. Insureworks Director Nick Rinylo noted that depreciation remains a significant hidden cost, making protection such as RTI GAP insurance important if a vehicle is written off or stolen.
