Passwords, bank transactions, messages — almost everything on the internet has been locked by the same math for 40 years (RSA/ECC). That math is "hard" for ordinary computers, but "easy" for a large quantum computer down the road. The catch: attackers aren't waiting for that machine to arrive — they're already stealing your encrypted data and stockpiling it today, ready to crack it the day the machine is ready. This is the story of swapping out the whole world's keys, before time runs out.

Quantum-safe adoption advances while crypto custody trust suffers fresh breaches
▲
Quantum-safe products and standards gain real traction Lattice launched Mach-N2 FPGAs with CNSA 2.0 post-quantum cryptography after 62% revenue growth; Aviatrix shipped ML-KEM encryption ahead of US federal migration deadlines; CUbIQ and Coherent demonstrated pluggable quantum key distribution. These show post-quantum security moving from theory to shipping products, lifting demand for the theme.
Multiple new product launches and standards milestones are the core positive force for the theme this period.
Governments and major crypto players push quantum readiness Thailand's NCSA set a 2030 quantum-ready goal with TLS 1.3 upgrades and cryptographic library surveys. Coinbase is building quantum-resistant custody for $250 billion in assets, developing PQ-CoreKMS and post-quantum multi-party computation. Both expand the addressable market for post-quantum cryptography and key management.
New government and major-exchange commitments broaden the demand base for quantum-safe solutions.
Crypto exchange breach and UK encryption order test trust Bitget lost $351.6 million after hackers breached wallet back-end systems and forged transfers, though private keys were not taken and a $464 million protection fund covers losses. Separately, Apple is fighting a secret UK order to weaken iCloud encryption. Both erode confidence in cryptographic trust and custody.
These are the main negative forces this period, directly hitting trust in crypto infrastructure and encryption.
SEALSQ cash burn highlights funding risk in PQC cohort SEALSQ reported a $32.2 million half-year operating loss on $11.2 million revenue, with heavy spending and commercial revenue from its QS7001 chip not expected until late 2026. This shows that some post-quantum players still burn cash while waiting for adoption, a risk for the theme's smaller names.
It is a new, concrete example of capital risk in the post-quantum cohort, balancing the positive adoption news.
Adam Back Mocks Ethereum After AI Signature Warning
Adam Back threw shade at Ethereum after Ethereum researchers warned this week that AI could break the signatures securing Bitcoin and Ethereum "in months, not years" in the worst case, well before quantum computers arrive. Back, the Hashcash inventor and Blockstream chief executive, responded to the warning with the remark "Almost like Satoshi knew something," a jab at Ethereum's design choices. The Ethereum researchers' warning centered on the signature schemes that underpin both Bitcoin and Ethereum, which they said could be broken by AI far sooner than the quantum-computing threat the industry has long anticipated. Back's comment implies that Bitcoin's original design anticipated such risks in a way Ethereum's did not.

Cardano Founder Hoskinson Pushes Back on Buterin's AI Lattice-Cryptography Threat Claim
Charles Hoskinson, founder of Cardano, pushed back on X on October 9 Japan time against the view that artificial intelligence threatens the security of lattice cryptography. Hoskinson criticized Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin's argument, saying it offered no concrete attack method or basis for its computational cost. Ahead of this debate, a researcher at the Ethereum Foundation warned on October 7 that AI could threaten the digital signatures used in crypto assets sooner than quantum computers would, and Buterin said the following day, October 8, that AI could accelerate mathematical research and uncover unknown weaknesses in lattice cryptography, adding that security could suffer a serious blow within the next two years and that increasing key sizes tenfold would also be reasonable. Hoskinson disputed the analogy to integer factorization, noting that lattice cryptography has years of accumulated research and verification, and said that anyone claiming a similar breakthrough must specify concretely what kind of attack it would be and what it would exploit. He also warned that avoiding the adoption of lattice cryptography before a concrete attack is demonstrated could delay the shift to secure communications prepared for quantum computers.

Buterin Warns AI-Driven Math Advances Could Strike Lattice Cryptography Within Two Years
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin posted on X on the 8th, Japan time, that AI-accelerated advances in mathematics make it quite possible that the practical security of lattice cryptography will suffer a serious blow within the next two years. Lattice cryptography is a method based on the difficulty of solving mathematical problems on high-dimensional lattices, and has been regarded as the leading candidate for post-quantum cryptography. The previous day, Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake warned that, citing OpenAI's publication of 722 mathematics papers, the ECDSA signature scheme used by Bitcoin and Ethereum could be broken before Q-Day, the point at which quantum computers crack cryptography, and in the worst case within a matter of months. Drake called on the industry to prepare for bunker mode, proposed systematically moving assets to unused addresses whose public keys have not been exposed, and urged five companies including Binance and bitbank to strengthen their cold wallets. Buterin said he does not recommend rushing to move funds to new wallets today, but added that reliance on cryptography vulnerable to AI should also be reduced, and that if lattice cryptography is used, key sizes should be increased tenfold. Just about three weeks ago, Buterin said that AI also helps defense, so crypto asset security will not collapse; this time he has raised his assessment of the threat by one notch. Blockchains that have considered lattice-based approaches for post-quantum security may be forced to reconsider their strategy.

Cloudflare Becomes Public Certificate Authority, Launches Basin Data Platform
Cloudflare has become a public Certificate Authority, issuing post-quantum ready TLS certificates to external organizations. The company also introduced Basin, an open-source serverless data platform designed to handle application data without dedicated infrastructure management. In addition, Cloudflare entered a major partnership with Deutsche Telekom to offer joint security and connectivity services to enterprise clients across Europe. The moves extend Cloudflare beyond protecting and accelerating traffic into owning key trust primitives and a neutral, open data layer, in contrast to more closed ecosystems at players like Amazon or Microsoft. The Deutsche Telekom tie-up deepens enterprise penetration through large multi-product deals while testing a flagged risk around customer concentration and execution at scale.

Europol Warns of Crypto Theft Risk from Quantum Attacks
The European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Cooperation, Europol, published a report on October 7 warning of the risk of cryptocurrency theft through quantum computers. If a sufficiently powerful quantum computer emerges, it could potentially derive a wallet's private key from a public key exposed externally, raising the danger that attackers could transfer assets without the owner's permission. The report cites this key mechanism as the main vulnerability to quantum attacks, while explaining that the hash functions underpinning the integrity of blockchain records are relatively resistant to quantum attacks. Europol recommended a gradual migration to "post-quantum cryptography" designed to withstand quantum attacks, and also listed improving wallet security and key management, as well as informing users about update and migration procedures, as countermeasures. Moves toward countermeasures are also emerging for Bitcoin: the blockchain development company StarkWare announced on August 26 that a quantum-resistant BTC transaction had been completed on a live network for the first time, and the Ethereum Foundation has also launched a dedicated site for post-quantum readiness and is advancing preparations for the transition.

DigiCert Adds Verifiable Agent Identity to NVIDIA Open Agent Safety Platform
DigiCert announced support for the NVIDIA Open Agent Safety Platform, pairing its DigiCert AI Trust Manager with NVIDIA OpenShell to give enterprises verifiable identity and authority for autonomous AI agents. OpenShell, the open secure runtime at the center of the platform, permits nothing by default, enforces policy outside the agent's process, and records every allow-or-deny decision, while DigiCert AI Trust Manager discovers and manages agents, establishes each agent's identity and ownership, defines what it is authorized to do, and revokes that authority with a kill switch when trust changes. Each agent receives a DigiCert AI Passport, a portable cryptographically signed credential tied to an accountable owner, plus policy-based visas defining which systems, data, and actions it may access and for how long; because the passport and permissions travel with the agent, other systems and organizations can verify them without relying on the same identity provider. The support is built around four areas: identity that policy can act on, verification before execution through signed agents, models, and MCP servers tied to an AI Bill of Materials, auditable evidence binding trusted identity to OpenShell's allow-and-deny records, and trust across company boundaries using the same PKI model that secures the internet. DigiCert CEO Amit Sinha said NVIDIA creates the boundary around the agent while DigiCert establishes who the agent is and what authority it has, and that PKI, which solved cross-boundary trust for the internet at scale, has an important role in establishing trust for autonomous agents. Support begins with NVIDIA OpenShell, with additional capabilities planned as the two companies continue to advance enterprise AI trust and agent security.

IBM Brings Agent Identity Tools to Nvidia OpenShell as Shares Fall 2%
IBM is bringing its agent identity and credential tools into Nvidia OpenShell, the hybrid-cloud and enterprise-AI company said, with shares falling about 2.0% to $220.89 at 9.52am ET on Monday, Sept. 28. IBM Agent Identity, now in public preview, establishes an agent's identity and authority, while HashiCorp Vault controls its access to credentials and IBM Identity Protection helps security teams spot agents operating outside their view. Red Hat OpenShift provides a way to run those agents across different computing environments, and together the tools could make autonomous software easier for large companies to supervise. The announcement gives investors no contract value, pricing or date for a full Agent Identity release, though it could open the door for IBM's wider software business. The chart puts the share price 9.08% below its $242.94 GF Value estimate, a gap that could narrow if IBM turns agent security into meaningful sales.

Bitget Resumes Bitcoin Withdrawals After Roughly $390 Million Outflow
Crypto exchange Bitget announced on its official X account on September 28 that it had resumed Bitcoin withdrawals starting at 5:00 p.m. Japan time. The move is part of a phased restoration of withdrawal services that had been suspended following a security incident confirmed on September 24. The exchange said the vulnerability behind the incident has been fixed, no new unauthorized transfers have been detected since the incident was contained, and user account balances were unaffected. Under the withdrawal resumption schedule, Ethereum withdrawals will resume at 5:00 p.m. on September 29, Tether at 5:00 p.m. on September 30, and other cryptocurrencies, fiat currencies, and P2P-related withdrawals at 5:00 p.m. on October 2. The backdrop is a large-scale asset outflow that occurred on September 24, when the company detected unauthorized asset movements from some of its hot wallets and warm wallets on September 25 and disclosed that about $387.5 million in assets had been moved to addresses controlled by the attacker. An initial investigation found that the attacker breached a key backend system underpinning the wallets, falsified transfer data, and moved the assets, but no evidence was found that the private keys themselves were stolen. The company plans to cover the losses through its user protection fund, which stood at roughly $464 million at the time of the incident, exceeding the amount lost, and users do not need to take any additional steps before withdrawals resume.
Bitget reports $351.6 million in crypto transferred out, linked to North Korean hackers
Bitget, a major cryptocurrency trading platform, disclosed that digital assets worth about $351.6 million were transferred out of its system without authorization, with preliminary evidence linking the incident to a North Korean hacker group. Bitget CEO Gracy Chen said the investigation team found IP addresses linked to a VPN service previously used by North Korean hackers, as well as attack patterns similar to earlier operations tied to North Korea, though the exact technical method of access is still under review. Bitget detected the unauthorized transfers of digital assets from crypto wallets on the afternoon of Thursday, September 24, U.S. time, totaling 19 transactions from hot wallets and warm wallets, while cold wallets were unaffected. The assets transferred out included ether, XRP, USDT, USDC, AVAX and BNB across multiple networks. An earlier estimate put the losses at about $183 million, but Bitget said that figure did not cover transactions on all affected networks. Bitget's security team found that hackers breached the wallet backend system before falsifying transfer data and prompting the system to sign off on the transactions. The company said it has brought the incident under control and prevented further asset transfers. Chen said the attack was not caused by a private key leak or compromise. Bitget is still temporarily suspending withdrawals to repair and strengthen system security, while deposits and trading remain available as normal. The Bitget CEO has not given a definite timeline for resuming withdrawals, but said it could take only a few hours to a few days and is unlikely to stretch to weeks. The company added that customer asset balances remain accurate and that losses are covered by its user protection fund, which holds more than $464 million.

Quantum eMotion Unit SKV Wins USPTO Notice of Allowance for SecureKey Patent
Quantum eMotion Corp. said its recently acquired subsidiary SKV Technology Inc. has received a Notice of Allowance from the United States Patent and Trademark Office for U.S. patent application No. 18/819,165 covering its SecureKey technology. A Notice of Allowance means the USPTO has determined the application is entitled to proceed toward issuance as a U.S. patent, subject to completion of applicable administrative requirements. SecureKey is a cryptographic technology designed to manage and protect cryptographic key material during cryptographic operations. Separately, the SecureKey Cryptographic Module is undergoing validation under the FIPS 140-3 framework administered through the Cryptographic Module Validation Program of the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology and the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security, and currently holds an Implementation Under Test designation, which indicates the module has entered testing with an accredited laboratory but does not constitute FIPS 140-3 validation or certification. Chief Executive Officer Dr. Francis Bellido said the Notice of Allowance is an important step in the patent process for the SecureKey technology acquired through SKV, while the module continues through FIPS 140-3 validation as a separate process. The company said it will provide further information following formal issuance of the patent or upon material developments in the FIPS 140-3 validation process.
Coinbase to Build Quantum-Resistant Crypto Custody System
Crypto exchange Coinbase revealed by September 22 that it is developing a crypto custody system capable of supporting any post-quantum signature scheme blockchains may adopt in the future, in preparation for the risk of quantum computers cracking encryption. Yehuda Lindell, the company's head of cryptography, explained this in a video interview with the Mara Foundation. The company is upgrading its current custody infrastructure, which uses multi-party computation, so that it can withstand attacks by quantum computers, and is also considering an alternative approach using specialized devices called hardware security modules in case a signature scheme is adopted that multi-party computation cannot handle. According to the Mara Foundation, the company protects roughly 250 billion dollars' worth of digital assets centered on this system. On July 23, Coinbase explained on its official blog that its current key management system, CoreKMS, protects about 99.9 percent of its custodied assets, and that it is also developing a quantum-resistant version, PQ-CoreKMS, with plans to build an automated infrastructure within one year that can securely sign while distributing keys across multiple locations. Over the following two to three years, it aims to develop multi-party computation that does not require generating a complete private key even for quantum-resistant signatures.

The link was tested over an NVIDIA DGX Spark host system via its ConnectX-7 interface with no changes to the existing network, and the companies say the pluggable approach cuts power consumption, cost and footprint by a factor of 100 compared with conventional rack-based QKD systems. CUbIQ said the module derives keys from the quantum properties of the optical signal itself, so an interception attempt leaves a measurable fingerprint and compromised keys are detected and discarded before use. CUbIQ CEO Aaron Albores Mejia said the work with Coherent proves quantum-safe networking can be demonstrated on the AI infrastructure operators are already deploying. The demonstrator is being shown at ECOC 2026 in Málaga, Spain, from 21 to 23 September 2026 at Booth 1051 in the Dutch Pavilion, and the two companies said they are also working toward a next generation of secure, high-capacity optical pluggable transceivers.
NCSA Accelerates Cyber Resilience Push to Counter AI and Quantum Threats, Targets Quantum-Ready by 2030
The National Cyber Security Agency, or NCSA, has unveiled its direction for driving Thailand's cybersecurity, moving to clear out technology debt and elevate organisations toward Cyber Resilience in order to counter threats in the AI era, while setting a goal of bringing government agencies and critical information infrastructure, or CII, to quantum technology readiness, or Quantum-Ready, by 2030. Air Vice Marshal Amorn Chomchoey, Secretary-General of the NCSA, said at an open talk stage hosted by OPEN-TEC, a technology knowledge hub under TCC Technology Group, that over the past 20 years IT systems were adopted rapidly without enough emphasis on security, resulting in Technology Debt, or accumulated vulnerabilities in legacy systems. The NCSA therefore proposed guidelines for raising cybersecurity through key principles, stressing that security must begin on day one of AI development, covering software and data use, model training, and post-deployment operations, alongside building Cyber Resilience that shifts from a prevention-only mindset to the ability to withstand, detect, respond to, and recover critical infrastructure systems such as energy, public health, transport, and financial services, as well as the Zero Trust principle, the Least Privilege principle, and public-private partnership. In addition, the NCSA has begun laying out guidelines to survey Cryptographic Libraries, upgrade Web Servers to support the TLS 1.3 standard, and plan a transition to quantum-resistant encryption systems, with the goal of bringing the public sector and key agencies to Quantum-Ready status by 2030. It is also organising the Thailand Cyber Top Talent activity to address the shortage of cybersecurity personnel and to exchange threat intelligence for early warning.

Lattice Semiconductor Launches Mach-N2 FPGA Family After 62% Revenue Jump
Lattice Semiconductor rolled out its Mach-N2 FPGA family on September 16, a chip line built to protect control systems inside servers, network gear, and industrial equipment against next-generation cyber threats. The launch follows a second quarter in which Lattice reported revenue of $201.1 million, up 62% from a year earlier and above the high end of its own guidance, with non-GAAP earnings per diluted share of $0.53 versus $0.24 a year prior. The new family packs up to twice the logic density of its predecessor, configures a 220,000-cell device in under 30 milliseconds, and bundles CNSA 2.0-compliant post-quantum cryptography, with samples already shipped to compute and communications customers. Lattice guided third-quarter FPGA revenue to $220 million at the midpoint, 65% growth year over year, and said total revenue including two months of its newly closed AMI acquisition should push it toward a $1 billion annual run rate. The company closed the $1.65 billion AMI deal on July 27, 2026, paying roughly $1 billion in cash and issuing about 5.2 million new shares worth around $650 million, and AMI is expected to contribute more than $200 million in 2026 revenue on its own. GAAP net income fell to $19.4 million in the second quarter from $21.8 million in the first, with diluted GAAP earnings per share slipping to $0.14 from $0.16, as operating expenses jumped 29.9% quarter over quarter.
Lattice Semiconductor Launches Mach-N2 Secure FPGA Family and AI Design Tool
Lattice Semiconductor has launched its Mach-N2 FPGA family, adding higher logic density, integrated flash, post-quantum cryptography, and faster connectivity for secure control in modern infrastructure systems. The company paired the launch with its new AI-powered Lattice Prompt design tool, tying advanced hardware security to accelerated FPGA development workflows and potentially deepening its role in next-generation compute, communications, and industrial deployments. The Mach-N2 launch reinforces Lattice's secure control positioning but does not remove near-term risks around pricing pressure, customer inventory swings, or reliance on a relatively narrow product focus. Lattice's narrative projects $2.0 billion in revenue and $525.1 million in earnings by 2029, yielding a $164.92 fair value and a 52% upside to its current price. Before Mach-N2, the most optimistic analysts had already assumed revenue could reach about US$2.3 billion and earnings US$359 million by 2029, far above consensus.

Apple Challenges Secret UK Order Demanding iPhone Encryption Backdoor
Apple is contesting a covert UK government order that would require an encryption backdoor for iPhones, filing a legal challenge that seeks public acknowledgment of the directive and an end to related gagging rules. The company argues that weakening iPhone encryption for UK authorities could affect device security standards for users globally, reinforcing its long-running pitch on privacy and device-level trust. The practical test comes with the Investigatory Powers Tribunal process in the UK and any follow-on legislation or guidance that emerges from it. Investors are watching whether Apple discloses material changes to encryption architecture, new compliance costs, or explicit legal constraints in future UK or EU-focused risk disclosures and earnings commentary.

Microsoft Launches Azure Payment HSM v2 for Banks as Shares Rise 1.6%
Microsoft pushed another high-security financial workload deeper into Azure Thursday with a managed payment-security service built for banks and payment processors, sending the shares up approximately 1.6% to $498.17. The offering, Azure Payment HSM v2, combines Marvell's LiquidSecurity hardware with Utimaco's Atalla payment module, giving financial institutions a cloud-based way to protect payment keys, encryption and transaction security without giving up the controls demanded by regulated environments. The public preview is available in West US and Western Europe, and Microsoft did not disclose pricing, customer contracts or expected revenue, so the near-term financial impact remains difficult to quantify. The bigger story is where Microsoft keeps pushing Azure: Microsoft Cloud generated $59.3 billion, or roughly 65.9% of the company's latest quarterly revenue, and payment security opens another sticky workload where compliance requirements can make switching painful. The preview alone will not move Microsoft's financial needle, but successful production adoption could deepen Azure's grip on highly regulated customers and create another layer of recurring cloud spending.

Apple Asks Tribunal to Lift Gag on Secret Home Office iPhone Backdoor Order
Apple has asked the Investigatory Powers Tribunal to lift restrictions that bar the Home Office from confirming it secretly ordered the company to build a "backdoor" into iPhones. The US technology giant, joined by human-rights organisations Liberty and Privacy International, argued at a case-management hearing on Thursday that confirming the order's existence would let the legal challenge be heard in public. The Home Office ordered Apple last year to break the encryption protecting iPhone users' iCloud accounts, which hold photos, files, contacts and messages, even when users have enabled the most advanced protection features. Apple has refused, saying it would never build a way to break its own encryption, and has instead removed its "Advanced Data Protection" feature for everyone in Britain. Daniel Beard KC, for Apple, said lifting the restrictions would allow "facts to be deployed in the open"; Ben Jaffey KC, for the campaign groups, called the secrecy "farcical" and the "emperor's new clothes", while Neil Sheldon KC, for Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, said departures from "neither confirm nor deny" inevitably weaken its effectiveness. The three-person tribunal, led by its president Lady Carmichael, did not rule. The order was first issued early last year by then home secretary Yvette Cooper, dropped under pressure from the Trump administration, and replaced by a second order applying only to people in Britain.

COLDCARD Leak Culprit Moves Stolen Bitcoin for First Time—Possible Money Laundering via DEX
Alex Thorn, head of research at Galaxy Digital, said on September 3 that in the security breach involving the hardware wallet COLDCARD, the attacker behind the third wave has moved the stolen bitcoin for the first time. The attacker exchanged part of the stolen funds for Ethereum through THORChain, a cross-chain decentralized exchange (DEX). Moving funds from Bitcoin to Ethereum suggests a possible attempt to launder the money. According to Thorn, this is the first time stolen funds have moved from their original addresses across the series of attacks, which are classified into waves one through three. About 90% of the funds stolen in the third wave remain unmoved at this time. Additionally, although the attacker has faced issues such as some transactions being refunded during the exchange on THORChain, they have repeatedly attempted to exchange the remaining funds. Thorn said he has traced the funds routed through THORChain to new Ethereum addresses and shared that information with relevant authorities and cryptocurrency-related companies. Coinkite, the developer of COLDCARD, disclosed a firmware flaw in seed generation on July 30, and the attacker is believed to have regenerated private keys from weak seeds to steal funds. According to a tally published by Thorn on August 24, a total of 1,789.28 BTC, worth approximately $114.7 million (about 18.4 billion yen) at the time of the theft, was stolen from 8,865 addresses in the series of attacks.

Ethereum Developers Consider New EIP Proposal to Prepare for Quantum-Resistant Transition
Ethereum developers are considering a new EIP proposal to protect the network's staking foundation from future quantum attacks by making validator deposits compatible with quantum-resistant signatures. Co-proposed by Kevaundray Wedderburn, Tom Wambsgans, and Thomas Coratger, the proposal has been assigned the number EIP-8394 and aims to safeguard staking assets worth approximately 42.4 million ETH (about $104 billion, or ¥16.6 trillion). EIP-8394 would establish a new deposit contract that supports future authentication methods and a mechanism to gradually phase out new validator registrations using BLS, but it would not cover key migration for existing active validators. The Ethereum Foundation, while stating that the threat is not imminent, is preparing early because the transition will require years of adjustments, with 2029 marked as a major milestone on the official roadmap. The proposal is still in draft stage, and the implementation timeline is undecided, but its impact on liquid staking protocols and related smart contracts is a key focus.
