Tools, Diagnostics & CDMO

Every drug company in the world buys its instruments, sends out its tests, and outsources its manufacturing to roughly the same handful of companies. Whether a given drug succeeds or flops, the people selling the "shovels and tools" get paid first, every time. This is a hidden layer sitting under the entire pharma industry — and right now, international politics is shaking it like never before.

Diagnostics approvals and CDMO demand broaden; reimbursement cuts and chip shortage weigh

  • Diagnostics approvals and M&A broaden the market New FDA clearances for Alzheimer's and other tests (Labcorp, Roche/Lilly, Lantheus, Masimo, GE HealthCare) and deals like GE's $1B Sofie acquisition and McKesson's $2.25B Precision Medicine buy expand testing and tools demand. This widens the market for diagnostics and the sequencing and imaging tools behind them.

Shows the key positive force of widening diagnostic approvals and consolidation driving demand for tools and diagnostics.

  • CDMO and CRO demand stays strong on order growth Pharmaron's CDMO orders jumped over 50%, WuXi AppTec raised guidance, and CROs like Medicilon and Innostar returned to profit. Charles River's bookings hit a four-year high. This confirms robust demand for outsourced drug development and manufacturing, benefiting tools and CDMO companies.

Highlights the ongoing strength in CDMO/CRO orders and profits, a core driver of the theme.

  • China policy support and isotope capacity expand Shanghai's new plan backs biomedical innovation, and ASP Isotopes is adding stable-isotope and radiopharmacy capacity with government funding. This policy and supply expansion should lift demand for tools and CDMO services, especially in China and for nuclear medicine.

Captures new policy and supply-side developments that support the theme's growth.

  • Reimbursement cuts and chip shortage pose risks CMS proposed cutting lab test fees up to 15% annually through 2029, pressuring diagnostics pricing. Arm's CEO warned a chip shortage limits AI infrastructure needed for drug discovery. These are real headwinds to diagnostics revenue and tools demand.

Presents the main counterweights: reimbursement pressure and supply constraints that could slow the theme.

Natera Wins FDA Breakthrough Device Designation for Multi-Cancer Blood Test

The US Food and Drug Administration granted Breakthrough Device designation to Natera's multi cancer early detection blood test, a move that reshapes how investors frame the company's diagnostics pipeline. The designation follows a strong run in Natera's share price, with a 30-day return of 21.31%, a 90-day move of 48.44%, a year-to-date gain of 75.10%, and a 1-year total shareholder return of 136.73%. The stock's latest close of $400.71 sits above the most followed fair value estimate of $355.93, which implies the shares are 13% overvalued under a 7.5% discount rate. By contrast, the Simply Wall St discounted cash flow model estimates a future cash flow value of $599.47, suggesting the shares trade about 33% below that level. Natera's investment in new product launches such as Fetal Focus NIPT, Signatera Genome, and AI-based biomarkers, along with its R&D pipeline, positions it to capture growth from long-term trends in personalized medicine and early detection, though tighter reimbursement rules or sustained high R&D spending could pressure profitability.

KingMed Diagnostics Co-releases DeepGEM 2.0, a Multimodal AI Model for Lung Cancer Pathology Genomics

On October 10, the AI-Empowered Precision Diagnosis and Treatment of Lung Cancer Summit Forum and the launch ceremony for the National Respiratory Medicine Center's Lung Cancer Precision Diagnosis and Treatment Standardization Project, hosted by the National Respiratory Medicine Center of the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University and the Guangdong Provincial Chest Disease Society, and organized by KingMed Diagnostics, was held in Guangzhou. At the event, DeepGEM 2.0, a multimodal AI model for lung cancer pathology genomics jointly developed by the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University and KingMed Diagnostics, was officially released. A multicenter research project involving 50 medical institutions nationwide was also launched, marking the model's formal entry into large-scale clinical validation. According to Dr. Liu Si, head of KingMed Diagnostics' artificial intelligence division, DeepGEM 2.0 analyzes routine digital pathology slide images without requiring additional sampling and can deliver results in as little as one minute. Building on the original six genes—EGFR, KRAS, ALK, ROS1, TP53, and LRP1B—it adds BRAF, ERBB2, FGFR, MET, NTRK, and RET, bringing the total to 12 genes and achieving full coverage of genes corresponding to approved targeted therapies for lung cancer in China. The model will subsequently be deployed in a lightweight form at more than 500 medical institutions. Using an approach of AI-based initial screening combined with targeted validation of specific genes, it is expected to reduce the cost of lung cancer genetic testing to the range of several hundred yuan. Zhong Nanshan, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and director of the Guangzhou National Laboratory, said that in the new AI era, scientific research must aim high while serving the people. In 2025, the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University, together with KingMed Diagnostics and Tencent, released DeepGEM, a multimodal pathology genomics model capable of identifying genes from images. After nearly a year of multicenter data validation and clinical refinement, and iterative optimization using nearly 8,000 digital pathology slides from 31 provinces across China provided by KingMed Diagnostics, it has been upgraded to version 2.0. Liang Yaoming, chairman and CEO of KingMed Diagnostics, said that AI pathology technology brings new opportunities to narrow regional disparities in diagnosis and treatment and to reduce costs while improving efficiency. KingMed Diagnostics will leverage the network advantages of its nationwide intelligent medical diagnostic service platform to bring innovative pathology AI technology to primary-level healthcare.

Danaher Launches First AI-Powered Autonomous Lab at Abcam

Danaher announced in early October 2026 that it had launched its first AI-powered autonomous lab at Abcam, combining artificial intelligence, robotics and connected workflows to accelerate the design, building and testing of custom antibodies and other molecular tools. The lab's closed-loop system feeds every experimental result back into its AI models, a setup intended to lift both the speed and scale of reagent discovery while maintaining rigorous validation. The launch reinforces Danaher's Life Sciences automation and AI catalyst but does not materially change near-term sensitivities around bioprocessing demand or the risk that softer respiratory testing and China pricing could leave overall growth below what the market currently embeds. The announcement comes alongside the appointment of Julie Sawyer Montgomery as CEO from 1 October 2026, with execution on connected, automated workflows expected to depend heavily on leadership continuity and capital allocation discipline. Danaher's narrative projects $31.7 billion revenue and $6.1 billion earnings by 2029, requiring 8.1% yearly revenue growth and about a $2.1 billion earnings increase from $4.0 billion today, while three Simply Wall St Community fair value estimates cluster in a tight US$225.66 to US$239.86 range.

Board Rejects Shareholder's Proposal for Extraordinary General Meeting at Bioperfectus Technologies; Seal Validity Dispute Draws Attention

Bioperfectus Technologies announced on October 8 that the eighteenth meeting of its third board of directors was held on October 2, 2026, to review the proposal on agreeing to the controlling shareholder's request to convene an extraordinary general meeting. The result was 4 votes in favor, 5 against, and 0 abstentions, so the proposal was not passed. Directors who voted against included Wang Guoqiang, Liang Kecheng, Guo Haitao, Jia Zhaoqiang, and independent director Liu Xiaolun. Wang Guoqiang's main reason for opposition was that the controlling shareholder's relevant documents are subject to a dispute over seal validity, and the lawsuit for dissolution of the controlling shareholder is still pending, which could have a major impact on the company's control. The reasons given by the other opposing directors also involved the seal validity dispute and information asymmetry. The company also received a regulatory work letter from the Shanghai Stock Exchange, with the matter for handling being precisely the board resolution and related issues. In the first half of 2026, Bioperfectus Technologies achieved revenue of 147 million yuan and net profit attributable to the parent company of 19.56 million yuan.

Adaptive Biotechnologies Fair Value Raised to US$28.31 on clonoSEQ MRD Optimism

Adaptive Biotechnologies' modeled fair value per share has been lifted from US$26.36 to US$28.31, reflecting analyst optimism around the clonoSEQ minimal residual disease franchise. Multiple firms have raised their fair value estimates in recent months, including TD Cowen, BTIG, Piper Sandler and Guggenheim, with Guggenheim most recently at US$32 and Goldman Sachs at US$35. Goldman Sachs sees Adaptive Biotechnologies as a leader in next generation sequencing minimal residual disease testing, with current penetration at about 13% of the potential patient population. On the bearish side, Craig Hallum has flagged possible confusion around the proposed 2027 Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services clinical laboratory fee schedule, since some billing codes used by the company are among those facing proposed cuts of up to 15%, though the firm does not expect a significant direct financial impact. In the updated model, revenue growth has adjusted from 16.84% to 16.03%, net profit margin from 3.77% to 3.95%, future P/E from 328.9x to 344.6x, and the discount rate from 8.23% to 8.24%.

Avricore's HealthTab Integrates HeartEye Retinal Scan Referral Pathway

Avricore Health Inc. announced that its wholly owned subsidiary HealthTab Ltd. has completed an integration with HeartEye, a UK provider of AI-based retinal cardiovascular risk assessment, creating a new referral pathway into community pharmacy. Under the pathway, people found to be at elevated cardiovascular risk by a HeartEye retinal scan at their optician can be referred to a nearby HealthTab-enabled pharmacy for further assessment and care. HeartEye's Dr.Noon CVD test, developed by Mediwhale, uses AI to estimate cardiovascular risk from a retinal scan taken during a routine optician visit; when a patient is flagged at elevated risk, their Dr.Noon report QR code can be scanned into HealthTab at a nearby pharmacy, where a pharmacist carries out a point-of-care cholesterol test that feeds an automatic QRISK3 calculation, with all results displayed together on the patient's HealthTab dashboard. With newly qualified pharmacists in England registering as independent prescribers from September 2026, the pathway has the potential to take patients from identification and assessment through to treatment, where appropriate, within the community, supporting all three of the NHS 10 Year Health Plan's major shifts. HealthTab and Abbott will showcase their turnkey pharmacy-based point-of-care testing solution, including the new HeartEye integration, at The Pharmacy Show 2026 on October 11-12 at the NEC in Birmingham.

BKGI first-half profit surges 400%, lays out three strategies to push Oncology-Wellness-ATMP

Bangkok Genomics Innovation Public Company Limited, or BKGI, reported first-half 2026 results with net profit of 62.05 million baht, up 49.65 million baht, or 400%, from net profit of 12.40 million baht in the same period a year earlier. Total revenue came to 309.39 million baht, up 157.02 million baht, or 103%, from total revenue of 152.37 million baht in the same period last year. Dr. Saowalak Dansakul, Chief Executive Officer of BKGI, said the company is transitioning from a provider of NIFTY testing services to a full-service health and genomics innovation provider through three business models: instrument placement with reagent purchases, instrument purchases with reagent purchases, and instrument leasing with reagent purchases. It is also expanding its Precision Oncology portfolio with the OncoPRESS service and BRCA 1/2 testing, which are already partially reimbursed by the National Health Security Office. On revenue structure, the share from instrument and reagent sales rose to 55%, above the 45% from services, with reagent sales, which are recurring revenue, accounting for 36% of total revenue, or about 110 million baht, and the company expects to begin recognising significant revenue from reagent use starting in the third quarter of 2026. The ATMP group has begun contributing about 40.4 million baht in revenue and will become a driver of continuous reagent sales from 2027 onward. The company is also studying the feasibility of producing reagents in Thailand to manage supply chain and logistics risks, and expects second-half 2026 operating results to grow from the first half, supported by Oncology, Wellness & Longevity, NGS and ATMP, as well as the government-backed Phase 2 of the Genomics Thailand project.

Danaher to launch first AI-powered autonomous lab for antibody research

Danaher Corporation announced plans to launch its first AI-powered autonomous lab for antibody research, sending its shares up 2% in premarket trading Wednesday. The facility, expected to operate at scale in early 2027, will combine artificial intelligence, robotics and technologies from several Danaher operating companies to help researchers develop custom antibodies and other molecular tools, and is designed to deliver up to 8x faster discovery of affinity reagents and unlock up to a tenfold increase in annual reagent generation. Based at Abcam, a Danaher company, the lab uses AI to create new affinity reagents, including antibodies, then builds and tests each one, feeding results back into the model to improve subsequent designs, bringing together technologies from Beckman Coulter Life Sciences, Cytiva, Genedata, Integrated DNA Technologies, and Molecular Devices in one connected workflow. Julie Sawyer Montgomery, President and Chief Executive Officer of Danaher, said the autonomous lab reflects the kind of progress Danaher is uniquely positioned to deliver, helping turn promising ideas into validated systems faster. The lab represents the first step in a broader Danaher initiative to create smart instruments, integrated workflows and autonomous labs that accelerate scientific research. Ahead of Wednesday's announcement, Barclays analyst Luke Sergott raised the price target on Danaher to $255.00 from $230.00 while maintaining an Overweight rating.

NeoGenomics Guides to About US$209 Million Q3 2026 Revenue, Names Warren Stone CEO

NeoGenomics, Inc. issued preliminary third-quarter 2026 revenue guidance of about US$209 million with very strong next-generation sequencing growth and outlined plans to increase its full-year revenue guidance. The company also amended its bylaws to expand its Board to up to eleven directors. In a planned leadership transition, President and COO Warren Stone will become CEO and join the Board in January 2027, while current CEO Tony Zook moves to Executive Chair and the Board refreshes its independent leadership. The stronger revenue outlook, particularly in NGS, supports the near-term revenue catalyst but does not materially change the central risk that high fixed costs and heavy investment could weigh on margins if volumes soften or funding pressures persist. NeoGenomics' narrative projects $997.4 million revenue and $64.1 million earnings by 2029, with a $19.72 fair value estimate.

BTIG Downgrades Personalis to Neutral on Expected Tempus Takeover

BTIG downgraded Personalis to Neutral from Buy on Tuesday, with analyst Mark Massaro saying Tempus AI is highly likely to close its acquisition of the cancer test maker at the announced terms. Tempus AI agreed in July to acquire Personalis in a $1.5B deal, a time when Personalis was exploring a potential sale and reportedly drawing takeover interest from multiple parties, including Merck. Citing an S-4 filing, Massaro said Personalis received M&A interest from as many as five bidders but chose a lower bid from Tempus because the company's board had antitrust concerns over the higher bidder. Massaro removed his $16.25 per share target and said he does not expect a higher bidder to emerge, expecting the deal to close at the agreed-upon price of $16.25 per share.

Bruker timsTOF Study Maps 179,000 Human Plasma Proteoforms

Bruker Corporation announced a seminal bioRxiv preprint describing a draft atlas of the human plasma proteome at isoform, or proteoform, resolution, conducted by principal investigator Markus Ralser at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin and collaborators. By combining intact protein fractionation with diaPASEF mass spectrometry on Bruker timsTOF mass spectrometry systems, the researchers detected 5,077 plasma protein groups across 179,049 distinct proteoforms, with a high-confidence map comprising 44,083 proteoforms and a median of eleven proteoforms per protein. The study indicates that canonical proteins account only for a fraction of protein diversity in the blood stream and may constitute less than half of total protein content, and the workflow did not use nanoparticle-based enrichment. Dr. Markus Ralser, Einstein Professor of Biochemistry and Head of the Institute of Biochemistry at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, said the first draft of the plasma proteoform atlas shows that proteoforms are not rare exceptions but a defining feature of plasma biology. The preprint, titled "A draft atlas of the human plasma proteome at isoform resolution," was posted on September 28, 2026, and the draft isoform atlas is intended as a starting point for future proteoform in-depth studies across individuals, physiological states and diseases.

Autobio Diagnostics first-half revenue and net profit both declined; company says full-year overseas sales target of 600 million yuan faces considerable pressure

Autobio Diagnostics held its 2026 first-half results briefing on September 30, attended by four senior executives including Chairman Miao Yongjun and Vice President and Board Secretary Fang Ruikuan. In the first half of 2026, the company achieved total operating revenue of 2.058 billion yuan, down 0.12 percent year on year; net profit attributable to shareholders of 497 million yuan, down 12.94 percent; non-GAAP net profit of 493 million yuan, down 9.73 percent; and net cash flow from operating activities of 216 million yuan, down 47.38 percent. In response to an investor question about whether the overseas revenue target of 600 million yuan set at the beginning of the year can be met, the company said it has not adjusted the overseas sales target for now, and that meeting it faces considerable pressure. In the first half, overseas business revenue was 220 million yuan, up 40.13 percent year on year. For full-year 2025, overseas business revenue was 384 million yuan, up 34.96 percent, with products covering more than 120 countries and regions worldwide. The company said that as the share of sales from its own products increases, gross margin should rise. It also said the assembly line business, namely biochemistry and immunoassay, remains the most important growth driver at present, while microbiology and quality control products are growing rapidly with relatively large scale and are gradually contributing more to profit. It will take some time for tandem mass spectrometry, sequencing, and molecular businesses to make a contribution.

Stone, 54, has over three decades of Life Sciences and Diagnostics leadership experience, including senior roles at Ortho Clinical Diagnostics and MilliporeSigma/Merck KGaA, and has held positions of increasing responsibility since joining NeoGenomics in 2022. Shares fell 3.6% in after-hours trading Monday following the announcement.
