Lockheed's record backlog and missile ramp drive guidance raise
▲
Record $230B backlog and raised guidance Lockheed reported Q2 sales up 11% to $20.1B and EPS of $7.94, then raised full-year sales and profit guidance. A record $230B backlog, up 38% from a year ago, gives long-term revenue visibility and supports the stock.
This is the biggest new company-specific event, directly lifting earnings expectations and investor confidence.
Missile supply chain expands with new partner deals Lockheed awarded Boeing a $14.7B contract to triple PAC-3 MSE seeker output and L3Harris over $6B for THAAD propulsion. These deals secure critical parts, supporting Lockheed's plan to boost interceptor production and meet surging demand.
These supply-chain awards underpin Lockheed's ability to deliver on its massive missile backlog, a key growth driver.
New contract wins add to order book Lockheed won a $724M Japan Aegis combat system contract, a $209M Navy electronic warfare modification (up to $1.71B with options), and smaller F/A-18 and F-35 awards. These add concrete orders and steady revenue.
These are fresh contract awards that directly increase Lockheed's backlog and future sales.
Loss of Navy F/A-XX fighter contract to Boeing Boeing won the over $20B Navy F/A-XX next-generation fighter contract; Lockheed was eliminated in 2025. This removes Lockheed from a major future fighter program, a long-term competitive setback.
This is a new competitive loss that could weigh on Lockheed's long-term growth prospects.
Lockheed Martin Raises Quarterly Dividend 4.3% to $3.60
Lockheed Martin declared a quarterly dividend of $3.60 per share, a 4.3% increase from its prior dividend of $3.45. The forward yield comes to 2.83%. The dividend is payable Dec. 31 to shareholders of record as of Dec. 1, with an ex-dividend date of Dec. 1.
NASA Issues Final Request for Commercial Space Station Proposals
NASA on Friday issued a final request for proposals to develop commercial space stations that could replace the International Space Station, advancing plans to shift low Earth orbit operations to private companies while maintaining a continuous U.S. presence in space. Proposals are due Dec. 8, with contract awards expected in spring 2027, and NASA plans to select at least two contractors for initial development before holding a subsequent competition for final design, testing, certification and operational services. The agency intends to award multiple firm-fixed-price, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contracts covering development, certification and operation of the stations, seeking companies able to provide integrated destinations and transportation services for astronauts conducting research and technology development in low Earth orbit. Publicly traded aerospace companies with potential exposure include Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman and Redwire, while private firms Axiom Space, Vast and Starlab Space are also pursuing commercial orbital destinations. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman emphasized that commercial operators will need business models extending beyond government contracts, saying the opportunity is significant but the economics ultimately have to work.

Lockheed Martin Lifts Full-Year Guidance After Record $230 Billion Backlog
Lockheed Martin raised its full-year sales and profit guidance after reporting strong second-quarter fiscal 2026 results and a record backlog of $230 billion. Sales rose 11% from the prior year to $20.1 billion, and net earnings per share came in at $7.94 versus $1.46 a year earlier, when the company was hit by a $1.6 billion charge tied to its Aeronautics unit and helicopter programs that did not repeat. The backlog was up 38.3% year-over-year, an increase of $36.8 billion from six months ago, driven by $65 billion in new orders during the quarter, including a $35 billion multi-year contract for THAAD interceptors. Lockheed now expects full-year sales of $79.75 billion to $81.75 billion, up from an initial range of $77.5 billion to $80 billion and above analysts' average estimate of $79.14 billion, with full-year EPS of $29.95 to $30.65 against earlier forecasts of $29.35 to $30.25 and Wall Street's $29.90. The stock trades at a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 16.16, below the sector median of 18.97, below peer RTX at 24.57, and below its own five-year average of 17.79, with investors watching how the F-35 maker delivers on its third-quarter results expected later this month.

Boeing wins contract worth up to $14.7 billion from Lockheed for PAC-3 MSE seeker work
Boeing announced on the 5th that it has been awarded a seven-year contract worth about $14.7 billion from Lockheed Martin for the expanded production and delivery of seekers, the guidance units, for the PAC-3 Missile Segment Enhancement, or MSE, hit-to-kill interceptor. Under the contract, Boeing will be able to triple its production of PAC-3 MSE seekers. The PAC-3 MSE is a hit-to-kill interceptor used in the Patriot air defense system to intercept ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and aircraft. Lockheed announced in January that it had signed a seven-year framework agreement with the U.S. Department of Defense to raise annual production capacity for PAC-3 interceptors from about 600 to 2,000, and the latest contract is part of that production expansion. Demand for interceptors has surged as conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine strain U.S. weapons stockpiles, and the U.S. Army in July awarded Lockheed a contract worth up to $58.6 billion to expand PAC-3 missile production. Industry executives, however, warn that Congress has not yet approved the funding needed for these contracts, and contractors may be unable to make large investments in parts and facilities until lawmakers act.
L3Harris Lands Over $6b THAAD Propulsion Contract From Lockheed Martin
L3Harris Technologies has secured an undefinitized contract from Lockheed Martin worth more than US$6b over seven years to expand propulsion output for the THAAD missile defense system. The arrangement follows a prior framework with the Department of War to quadruple THAAD propulsion production and includes both a new Solid Rocket Boost Motor facility and added Liquid Divert and Attitude Control capacity. The contract lands as L3Harris shares have fallen about 9% over the past month and 22% year to date on a share price basis, though the 3 year total shareholder return is up roughly 53%. The company closed at $236.60, while the most followed narrative estimates fair value at about $342 per share using an 8.4% discount rate, framing the win as one more contract feeding into a broader backlog and earnings story. The story could break if U.S. budget pressure trims space spending or if prime contractor delays slow conversion of the reported US$42b backlog.

Lockheed Martin Wins $1.2 Billion U.S. Army Contract for PrSM Increment 2
Lockheed Martin has secured a U.S. Army contract worth up to $1.2 billion to produce the Increment 2 variant of its Precision Strike Missile, a next-generation long-range weapon designed to replace the Army Tactical Missile System. The award follows a second successful flight test in August that demonstrated the Increment 2 missile's ability to engage moving maritime targets. The contract is an indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity vehicle covering initial procurement, future orders, follow-on production and continued development, so the $1.2 billion ceiling is not guaranteed revenue. It builds on a seven-year agreement signed in March to raise annual PrSM production capacity to 550 missiles, following a $4.94 billion Army contract awarded in 2025. Lockheed's Missiles and Fire Control segment posted $4.1 billion of sales in the second quarter of 2026, up 19% year over year, with operating profit up 24% to $594 million, and its backlog reached $87.9 billion as of June 28, 2026, helping push the company's total backlog to a record $230.4 billion. Lockheed is simultaneously ramping PrSM, PAC-3 and THAAD production, putting pressure on manufacturing capacity and the supply chain.
Lockheed Martin Receives First Patriot PAC-3 MSE Parts From GM Defense
Lockheed Martin Corporation has received its first shipment of critical housing components for Patriot PAC-3 MSE interceptors from General Motors Company's defense unit, just 22 days after the two companies signed a manufacturing agreement on August 6, 2026. The components, delivered August 28, traditionally take months or years to produce, according to Reuters, as the Pentagon pushes for faster weapons production amid surging global demand for the Patriot missile defense system. The U.S. Army has announced a seven-year agreement worth up to $58.6 billion for PAC-3 MSE production from fiscal 2026 through 2032, supporting Lockheed's plan to raise annual output to 2,000 interceptors. Lockheed plans to invest $8 billion to $9 billion through 2030, modernize more than 20 facilities and add thousands of workers, though the companies have not disclosed the contract's value, expected component volumes, or GM's potential revenue. The initial shipment remains too small to affect either company's financial results by itself, and GM must demonstrate repeatable quality and volume before investors can assign value to the partnership.

US Said to Face Critical Shortage of Interceptors and Standoff Missiles
The United States is critically short on air defense interceptors and long-range standoff missiles, the two weapons it would need most in a hypothetical conflict with China, according to a defense analyst speaking on Bloomberg Businessweek. The analyst said President Trump's reference to U.S. missiles and stockpiles in his UN General Assembly address broke with convention, and warned that Beijing would be watching gleefully because the shortfall means the U.S. would be less able to bring its potential military power to bear. The Pentagon's FY 2027 Program Acquisition Costs by Weapon System, dated April 21, 2026, funds a surge in interceptor and precision-munitions buys, and the primes named on those lines stand to gain most. RTX booked over $5 billion in GEM-T Patriot effectors, including its first domestic GEM-T production order in over 30 years, plus $1.8 billion in AMRAAM in the second quarter, and carries a $289 billion backlog. L3Harris controls the sole large-scale solid rocket motor supply for both THAAD and PAC-3, backed by a $12 billion seven-year framework agreement, while Lockheed Martin is the THAAD prime named in the budget document and won a seven-year, $35 billion Missile Defense Agency contract to quadruple THAAD interceptor production. Two catalysts could turn the thesis into results: a promised PAC-3 multi-year contract in the second half of 2026 and congressional action on the administration's $67 billion supplemental weapons-replenishment request and the $1.1 trillion Department of Defense base budget for fiscal 2027.

International Business Machines is a US IT group with a US$216.3b market cap that sells integrated hardware, software and services, and its work with NASA and the ETH Zurich quantum hub taps into areas where large research and enterprise clients already use its infrastructure and consulting capabilities. The clearest test of the bull case will come as IBM reports how many paying industrial and research workloads actually run on Quantum System Two and related services at ETH Zurich once that system is deployed, and whether management starts breaking out any quantum or lunar AI related revenue or backlog in future quarterly updates. The bear case centers on execution risk in turning complex research collaborations into scalable, high margin Software and Consulting revenue rather than isolated projects.

The iShares U.S. Aerospace & Defense ETF fell 1% to $213.40 while the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust held roughly flat at $773.53, confirming the selling was concentrated in defense primes rather than the broader market. WTI crude oil traded at $91.64 per barrel, down 0.79% over the past 24 hours and lower for a fourth session, as the diplomatic signal compressed the geopolitical risk premium underpinning expectations for sustained munitions demand. The move extends an existing de-rating: RTX has shed 10% and Lockheed Martin 7% over the past month, making the Hormuz headline an accelerant rather than the ignition for the decline.

Lockheed Martin Presents Germany's First F-35A as 35-Jet Program Advances
Lockheed Martin Corp. presented Germany's first F-35A Lightning II to the German government at its F-35 production facility, a milestone in a German program of 35 F-35A aircraft that the company says could feed a long-term revenue pipeline spanning training, production and sustainment. The first eight aircraft will be delivered to Ebbing Air National Guard Base in Arkansas beginning this fall for pilot training, while the first German-based F-35s are expected to arrive in Germany in late 2027, with full operational capability not expected until 2029. Lockheed Martin Aeronautics president OJ Sanchez said the F-35 is more than a fighter jet, calling it a strategic capability that enables allies to operate together, adapt faster and stay ahead of emerging threats. The F-35 has now been selected by 20 nations, and Lockheed's Javelin Joint Venture with Raytheon recently signed an MOU with Tata Advanced Systems Limited to explore future co-production of the Javelin All Up Round in India. Hedge fund ownership of the stock fell from 83 funds in the first quarter of 2026 to 75 funds in the second quarter, according to 13F filings tracked by Insider Monkey, while short interest stood at 1.17% and State Street Corporation remained the largest institutional stakeholder with 32.98 million shares, or roughly 14.29% ownership, as of June 30.

Lockheed Martin Unveils AIM-260 Missile, Signs Pentagon Production Deal
Lockheed Martin has unveiled the AIM-260 Joint Advanced Tactical Missile, a classified next-generation air-to-air weapon built for greater range against advanced threats such as China's J-20 fighter, and signed a framework agreement with the U.S. Department of Defense to accelerate production and prepare for a multiyear procurement program. The missile will be integrated with the F-22 and F-35, and Australia has already committed roughly $521 million to JATM, though quantity and unit price remain classified. The announcement comes as the U.S. and its allies replenish missile inventories depleted during the Iran conflict, and Lockheed is investing $8 billion to $9 billion to expand munitions production across more than 20 U.S. sites, including PAC-3 MSE, THAAD, and Precision Strike Missile capacity. In 2025, Lockheed's Missiles and Fire Control segment sales rose 14% to $14.45 billion, operating profit jumped to $1.99 billion, and segment backlog increased to $46.65 billion, with tactical and strike missile programs including JASSM, LRASM, GMLRS and PrSM accounting for approximately $1.4 billion of the sales increase. Lockheed ended 2025 with $193.6 billion of total backlog and generated $6.9 billion of free cash flow, but the near-term earnings impact of JATM remains uncertain because production volumes, pricing, and the size of the planned multiyear contract are undisclosed.

The Pentagon announced nearly $1.9 billion in contract awards and potential contract value on September 14 involving Boeing and Lockheed Martin. Boeing received a $562 million fixed-price incentive Navy contract for low-rate initial production of the MQ-25A Stingray, covering three Lot 1 aircraft plus advance funds for long-lead components for three more Lot 2 aircraft, with initial deliveries not expected until 2029. Lockheed Martin was awarded three separate contracts totaling more than $1.3 billion, including a major missile contract, reflecting Pentagon demand for long-range standoff weapons and mobile precision artillery. Lockheed Martin is also the prime contractor for the Unmanned Carrier Aviation Mission Control System that operates the Stingray fleet. Recent filings showed hedge fund holdings of Boeing falling from 99 to 90 and Lockheed Martin from 83 to 75 between the first and second quarters.
Lockheed Martin Set for First Saudi F-35 Sale, Germany F-35A Rollout
Lockheed Martin is set to benefit from a US government plan to sell up to 48 F-35 jets to Saudi Arabia, following a notification to Congress in 2026, a package that would mark the first sale of F-35 aircraft to the kingdom. The company also marked the rollout of Germany's first F-35A in 2026, a key step in Berlin's transition to the aircraft. The Saudi notification for up to 48 F-35s would, if approved and executed, add a new Gulf customer to a platform already adopted by 20 nations and operating from 42 bases worldwide, extending an existing global footprint rather than creating a new product line. The next concrete waypoint is formal progression of the Saudi sale through Congress after the 2026 notification, which would turn a proposed package into a contracted backlog line, while for Germany investors can track the first eight F-35 deliveries to Ebbing Air National Guard Base for pilot training beginning this fall. Lockheed Martin, a US aerospace and defense group with a market cap of about $124.2b, designs and builds combat aircraft like the F-35 along with a wide range of military technology systems for governments in Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and other regions.

GM Begins Supplying Patriot Missile Components to Lockheed Martin
General Motors has started supplying missile-housing components for Lockheed Martin's Patriot PAC-3 MSE interceptors, delivering its first batch in August. Lockheed said GM completed work that typically takes months in three weeks. CEO Mary Barra told analysts this summer she expects $700 million of defense revenue this year at double-digit margins. The opportunity comes as Lockheed Martin faces a significant production ramp, with the Pentagon ordering it to more than triple Patriot output to over 2,000 missiles a year by the end of 2030 while constrained suppliers make scaling difficult. The most advanced Patriot costs over $4 million and takes more than two years to reach the customer, with many key parts largely handmade and sourced from single suppliers such as Boeing, which makes the seeker.

BofA Warns Bombardier U.S. Sales Ban Would Hit Largest Market
A potential ban on Bombardier aircraft sales in the United States could hit the Canadian jet maker's largest market and disrupt an aerospace supply chain spanning thousands of U.S. companies, BofA analysts said. The issue follows President Donald Trump's statement that Bombardier should no longer sell aircraft in the U.S., where its jets are certified by the Federal Aviation Administration and most aerospace goods produced in Canada and Mexico are exempt from U.S. tariffs. The U.S. accounts for about 45% of the global business-jet market and is Bombardier's largest individual market, with the company delivering roughly 80 to 100 aircraft there annually out of total deliveries of around 155, while its 2026 guidance calls for more than 157 aircraft. A halt to U.S. sales could also affect American suppliers, as Bombardier's supply chain includes roughly 2,800 U.S. companies across 47 states and generates about $2.5 billion in annual U.S. purchases. GE Aerospace supplies engines for Bombardier's Global 7500 and 8000 aircraft, Honeywell powers the Challenger 300, 350 and 3500 family, and RTX's Collins Aerospace supplies avionics across the Global and Challenger ranges. Trade tensions could also affect U.S. defense contractors if Canada shifts future procurement toward European or Asian suppliers, with programs potentially exposed including Canada's planned purchase of 88 Lockheed Martin F-35A fighters, which carries an acquisition budget of about C$27.7 billion, of which only 16 are firmly ordered and Ottawa has considered Saab's Gripen as a possible partial alternative. Canada also has commitments involving Boeing's P-8A Poseidon and General Atomics' MQ-9B SkyGuardian drones, and while a complete cancellation of Canada's outstanding U.S. defense contracts is considered unrealistic, future purchases could gradually shift toward other suppliers if trade relations deteriorate.
