In the AI race where every company is scrambling to build models, there's one thing everyone has to buy before they can even start playing — the accelerator. And it's sold the way a store sells to whoever walks in, not as a secret chip the tech giants build only for themselves. This lesson walks through why training AI takes thousands or tens of thousands of GPUs running in parallel, why a single company can take nearly 90% of this market with a “moat” made of software, and how far the challengers — AMD and Intel — can break in.

Nvidia and AMD earnings confirm AI accelerator boom; memory costs and custom chips still bite

  • Nvidia and AMD earnings show demand still far ahead of supply Nvidia's data center revenue more than doubled to $89 billion and it guided next quarter to $108 billion, while AMD's data center sales doubled to $6.7 billion with Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI, Oracle and Anthropic deploying its Helios racks. Both confirm accelerator demand remains far ahead of supply.

The two merchant GPU leaders' results are the clearest evidence the theme's core demand force is still strong.

  • New financing platforms unlock over $500 billion for AI buildouts Nvidia lined up Apollo, BlackRock, Blackstone, Brookfield, Goldman Sachs and KKR to mobilize over $500 billion of outside capital for AI infrastructure. This eases the biggest worry for the theme — that buyers run out of money — and supports years of future GPU orders.

Financing is the key constraint on converting AI demand into actual accelerator purchases, so this directly supports the theme.

  • Vera Rubin ramps across clouds as Nvidia pushes into server CPUs Nvidia's next-generation Vera Rubin platform is in full production and running at CoreWeave, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, Oracle and Nebius, with per-gigawatt revenue rising to about $40 billion. Nvidia also entered full production of Vera CPUs, strengthening its grip on AI data centers.

The Rubin ramp and CPU expansion show the merchant accelerator leader widening its lead and locking in future demand.

  • Memory shortage and rising costs squeeze GPU margins Surging DRAM and HBM prices are raising costs across the group, with Nvidia GPU lead times stretching from 6 to 40 weeks and Nvidia guiding next quarter's gross margin down to 74% from 75%. Higher memory costs mean the group ships fewer accelerators profitably.

This is the main counterweight: even with booming demand, memory costs cap how many accelerators can ship profitably.

Nvidia in early talks to acquire or invest further in Reflection AI

Nvidia is in early-stage discussions to acquire or increase its investment in Reflection AI, a U.S. startup focused on developing open-weight models, the Financial Times reported, citing people familiar with the discussions. The structure of a potential deal could take several forms, including a so-called acqui-hire that would let Nvidia hire staff and license technology while avoiding antitrust scrutiny tied to a full acquisition, and deal terms currently under discussion were not available. Nvidia, the world's most valuable company, has already invested $800M into Reflection, which was last valued at $25B in a March funding round. Nvidia, whose CEO Jensen Huang has in the past called for an open-weight ecosystem for AI, could also make an additional equity investment in Reflection or reach an agreement to supply more chips or computing power to the company. Multiple people with knowledge of the matter said a deal could be reached in the coming weeks, while cautioning that the companies could also walk away from the talks; Nvidia and Reflection did not respond to the Financial Times' requests for comment.

AMD Data Center Revenue Doubles to $6.7 Billion as Helios Rack Deployments Ramp

Advanced Micro Devices reported fiscal Q2 2026 Data Center revenue more than doubled, up 107% to $6.7 billion, a segment that now accounts for 58% of company sales. The company said Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI, Oracle, and Anthropic are among those deploying its Helios rack system, which combines Instinct GPUs, EPYC CPUs, and networking, and a recent partnership with Anthropic covers up to 2 gigawatts of MI450 GPUs in Helios racks. Non-GAAP gross margin reached 56% and non-GAAP operating margin hit 27%, helped by an easy comparison against the year-ago quarter's $800 million in charges tied to US export controls on a data center GPU, while non-GAAP earnings per share came in at $1.66 versus $0.48 a year earlier. Management guided fiscal Q3 revenue to about $13 billion, plus or minus $300 million, and expects Data Center sales to accelerate in the second half, though the largest commitments, including Anthropic's, are multiyear deployments rather than revenue already booked. Client revenue rose 23% to $3.1 billion, gaming fell 31% to $779 million on weaker semi-custom sales, capital expenditures reached $808 million, and free cash flow was $1,558 million, down from $2,566 million in fiscal Q1. Investors are paying 85.60 times forward earnings as of October, against a sector multiple of 23.74 and AMD's own five-year average of 39.90, with earnings per share expected to grow 107.2% in 2027.

Tianyang Technology's official WeChat account discloses purchase of 20,000 GPUs; order landing remains uncertain

Tianyang Technology announced before market open today via its official WeChat account that it has signed a GPU Procurement Agreement with Company X to purchase 20,000 NVIDIA RTX PRO 5500 Blackwell units. Boosted by the news, the company's closing price that day was 16.16 yuan per share, up 12.38% from the previous trading day. A Cailian Press reporter interviewed multiple industry insiders and learned that the NVIDIA RTX PRO 5500 Blackwell has not yet officially gone on sale, and its official pricing has not been determined. The domestic quote for this GPU may exceed 100,000 yuan per unit. Based on a purchase volume of 20,000 units, the aforementioned agreement could be worth more than 2 billion yuan, but practitioners bluntly said the order has barely begun to take shape, and getting the goods is estimated to happen no earlier than the first quarter of next year. Xia Hailong, a lawyer at Shanghai Shenlun Law Firm, said a preliminary estimate puts the order amount at potentially several billion yuan. If it reaches the financial threshold requiring disclosure, it should be disclosed through statutory channels in accordance with the law, and publishing it only through a WeChat official account is clearly non-compliant. A representative from Tianyang Technology's securities department responded that specific details are inconvenient to disclose, and if the relevant disclosure threshold is met, there will be subsequent disclosure. Previously, Tianyang Technology had already disclosed large-scale computing power projects, including a project cooperation agreement signed in May with Qiming Xinghan and others for an overall computing power procurement scale in the range of 3.5 billion to 4 billion yuan, a joint venture established in June with Capital Online with a capital contribution of 70 million yuan for a 70% stake, and a Computing Power Cloud Service Agreement signed with Yunli Zhihui with a total tax-inclusive amount of 303 million yuan, which was raised to 402 million yuan in July. The semi-annual report shows that as of the end of June this year, the company's fixed assets were approximately 275 million yuan. The two major contracts with Qiming Xinghan and Yunli Zhihui recorded zero sales revenue recognized in the current period and cumulatively. In the first half of the year, non-GAAP net profit was negative 6.9296 million yuan, turning to a loss year-on-year. Net cash flow from operating activities was approximately negative 341 million yuan. Monetary funds were approximately 508 million yuan, and short-term borrowings were approximately 615 million yuan.

Nvidia's $20 Billion Groq Deal Faces Delaware Lawsuit Over Deal Structure

Two former Groq engineers have sued in Delaware, alleging Groq's board improperly structured the 2025 transaction through which Nvidia acquired the company's AI technology. The deal consisted of a $17 billion licensing agreement plus a separate $3 billion Nvidia stock bonus pool for engineers who joined the chipmaker, and the plaintiffs argue the arrangement transferred Groq's core technology and much of its engineering talent without treating it as a conventional acquisition; Groq has called the lawsuit meritless. Nvidia said Groq 3 LPX, its first rack-scale LPU system combining Nvidia's high-throughput architecture with Groq's high-interactivity technology, is already in full production with volume shipments expected later this quarter, and the company said the system achieved 3,400 output tokens per second in an Artificial Analysis benchmark, four times faster responsiveness than the nearest alternative platform. Groq technology is also part of Nvidia's broader Vera Rubin platform, where management estimates revenue opportunity per gigawatt has expanded from roughly $18 billion with Hopper to $25 billion with Blackwell and $40 billion with Vera Rubin. Separately, the U.S. Department of Justice was reportedly probing Nvidia's Groq transaction, and FTC Chair Andrew Ferguson has said the agency would examine deal structures potentially designed to escape conventional merger review. Nvidia generated $96 billion of revenue in fiscal Q2 2027, more than double the prior-year level, with Data Center revenue of $89 billion, and management expects approximately 70% revenue growth in fiscal 2028 on a supply-constrained outlook; the stock traded at 24.88 times forward P/E as of October 6, with consensus calling for EPS growth of 95.23% in fiscal 2027 and 69.66% in fiscal 2028.

Nvidia and Microsoft unveil RTX Spark laptop as Huang credits Windows for Nvidia's founding

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said Nvidia was founded because of Windows, speaking alongside Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella at an event unveiling a laptop that runs on Nvidia's RTX Spark chip. Huang said he and his co-founders conceived of a personal computer with 3D graphics in late 1992, around the time of Windows 3.1, and Nvidia started in 1993. When Nvidia went public in January 1999, Microsoft was worth about $390 billion, roughly $800 billion in today's dollars, while Nvidia was worth less than $1 billion, roughly $1.2 billion today. Nvidia first surpassed Microsoft in market value on June 18, 2024, and has remained ahead on every trading day since June 25, 2025; as of Wednesday's close, Nvidia was worth $5.73 trillion, about $1.8 trillion more than Microsoft's $3.93 trillion. Huang traced Nvidia's evolution to Microsoft's software, saying Windows 95 let a graphics chip connect to a PC, DirectX opened those chips to applications, and DirectX 8 marked the point when the two companies co-invented the first programmable GPU, work that later became CUDA.

AMD CEO Lisa Su Says AI Demand to Stay 'Very, Very High' for Years, Plans 2027 Supply Boost

Advanced Micro Devices CEO Lisa Su said demand for AI and computing capacity will remain elevated for years, requiring the chipmaker to substantially increase supply again in 2027 after already expanding capacity through 2026. Speaking during a one-day visit to Taiwan on Tuesday, Su said AMD needs more advanced wafer capacity and plans to increase its more than $10 billion Taiwan supply-chain investment announced in May, adding that demand for CPUs is even higher than supply. She said memory remains supply-constrained, including the high-bandwidth memory used in AI servers, and that AMD also needs more advanced packaging capacity. Su met Foxconn Chairman Young Liu and executives from Acer, Asus and Quanta before heading to Hsinchu to meet with TSMC executives and other suppliers, and said AMD now coordinates capacity planning three to five years out instead of one or two. Su also said AMD began shipping its Helios AI systems in the third quarter and continues to see strong demand for more compute as production ramps.

CoreWeave Raises GPU Prices Twice in Three Months, UBS Flags Demand Strength

CoreWeave Inc. has raised its per-hour GPU prices twice in three months, first by 25% across all products in July 2026 and then by another 10% over the past two to three months, according to UBS analyst Karl Keirstead, who sees the pricing gains as evidence that demand in the AI infrastructure market remains strong. Keirstead said the industry is seeing higher hosted Nvidia GPU prices and improving revenue per gigawatt of capacity, though the impact will take time to appear in financial statements. UBS also flagged local and state opposition to data centers, along with the cost and availability of capital, as risks, adding that some projects may fade while better-positioned companies such as CoreWeave should remain strong. CoreWeave carries approximately $35.1 billion in debt, $16.3 billion in operating lease liabilities and $5.5 billion in cash, giving it an enterprise value of $94.23 billion, nearly double its $48.20 billion market capitalization, and a valuation of 7.42x forward sales versus roughly 3.84x on market cap alone. The two increases together raise hourly pricing by about 37.5%, though the news does not specify how much of the business is covered by the new pricing; hedge fund holders rose from 63 at the end of Q1 2026 to 71 at the end of Q2 2026, while short interest stood at 17.64% as of September 15, 2026.

Advanced Micro Devices has agreed to acquire World Labs in an all-stock deal valued at $8.2 billion, announced September 28, as the chipmaker pushes deeper into physical AI. World Labs develops AI models that simulate three-dimensional environments, with potential applications in robotics, autonomous machines and industrial simulation, while AMD supplies the CPUs, GPUs and networking infrastructure behind such workloads. AMD has not disclosed World Labs' expected near-term revenue contribution, and because the transaction is all-stock, current AMD investors will face dilution. The deal adds to AMD's challenge to Nvidia's dominance in AI computing and could expand its addressable AI market beyond generative-AI infrastructure, though the company will compete for share in a crowded field. AMD reported second-quarter revenue up 50% year over year to $11.54 billion, with non-GAAP operating income up 245% to $3.09 billion and earnings per share up 246% to $1.66, while Wall Street consensus points to roughly $50.9 billion in 2026 revenue and $7.58 in 2026 earnings per share.

Microsoft Unveils $2,599 Surface Laptop Ultra for Running AI Models at Home

Microsoft on Wednesday unveiled its Nvidia-powered Surface Laptop Ultra, a laptop designed to let users run AI models at home without relying on the cloud. Starting at $2,599, the Surface Laptop Ultra runs on Nvidia's Arm-based RTX Spark, which offers upwards of 128GB of onboard memory. Microsoft and Nvidia, along with rivals Apple, Intel, and AMD, are increasingly pushing the concept of running AI software in the home, where users install an app, download an open-weights model, and work without usage limits while keeping their data private. But local AI is not for everyone: it demands heavy system resources, and a Google AI subscription, for example, gives access to Gemini 3.1 Pro and Deep Research in Gemini plus 400GB of cloud storage for $4.99 per month. The Surface Laptop Ultra can likely handle local AI workloads with ease, but its price tag is a bit high for all but the biggest AI boosters and enthusiasts.

Cramer Touts AMD AI Opportunity as Q2 Revenue Jumps 50% to $11.5 Billion

Jim Cramer said on the September 28 episode of Mad Money that Advanced Micro Devices' push into artificial intelligence has opened another growth opportunity as the industry shifts from model training toward inference and agentic AI, pointing to the stock's roughly 13% gain the previous week and its brief move above a $1 trillion market capitalization. AMD's second-quarter revenue rose 50% year over year to $11.5 billion, with Data Center revenue more than doubling to $6.7 billion and accounting for 58% of total revenue, and the company expects approximately $13 billion of third-quarter revenue, implying roughly 41% year-over-year growth and 13% sequential growth at the midpoint. Cramer credited CEO Lisa Su, who took over in October 2014, with AMD's turnaround, saying the stock has rallied an astonishing 18,433% since she arrived, while noting NVIDIA remains ahead in high-end AI accelerators. AMD also announced on September 28 that it agreed to acquire AI model developer World Labs for approximately $8.2 billion in an all-stock transaction, with co-founder Fei-Fei Li expected to join as executive vice president and chief scientist after the deal's expected closing by the end of 2026. Cramer cautioned that the latest leg higher was in part a stroke of good luck tied to the market's shift toward inference and agentic AI, and AMD's own filings flag that U.S. export restrictions affect its MI308 products and that China sales depend on customer demand, import-control rules and licensing, while its 54% GAAP gross margin in the second quarter compared with 40% a year earlier that included $800 million of inventory and related charges tied to those export controls. AMD trades at approximately 39.5x forward earnings, above NVIDIA at nearly 25x but below Intel at 63.3x, and 164 hedge funds held the stock in the second quarter, up from 134 in the first, with short interest at 2.46% of the public float heading into the second half of September.

AMD Grants OpenAI and Meta Warrants for 320 Million Shares at One Cent

Advanced Micro Devices has granted OpenAI and Meta warrants over as many as 160 million shares each, at an exercise price of one cent, according to the company's filings. The warrants do not vest on signing: each holder earns its tranches by buying AMD processors, up to six gigawatts of deployed capacity apiece, so the dilution and the revenue arrive together. The final OpenAI tranche carries one more condition, a $600 share price, a threshold already cleared with AMD trading at $655.90 on October 6. At the current price, the 320 million shares represent roughly $210 billion of value handed over for $3.2 million, close to a fifth of the company against its $1.07 trillion market capitalization. AMD reported revenue growth of 50.10% in the most recent quarter, an operating margin of 17.25% and a net margin of 15.58%, while the stock trades at 167.32 times trailing earnings and 41.72 times forward earnings.

BNP Paribas Raises AMD Price Target 60% to $960 on AI CPU Strength

BNP Paribas raised its price target on AMD by 60% to $960, citing remarkable strength in CPUs driven by artificial intelligence, while keeping a Neutral rating on the Dr. Lisa Su-led company. Analyst Karl Ackerman wrote that AMD is increasingly becoming a leading provider of AI infrastructure, successfully pivoting from a silicon pure-play to a full-stack systems platform, and said the firm's new agentic CPU model supports above-consensus estimates driven by AMD's leadership and roadmap to capture a growing share of a roughly $245B agentic CPU total addressable market by 2030. Ackerman noted that AMD's Helios AI accelerators have become a credible second source to Nvidia, backed by 14 gigawatts of commitments, and that the success of Helios, improvements in ROCm integration, and the recent acquisition of World Labs bolster AMD's opportunity to address frontier AI deployments, with OpenAI, Meta, and Anthropic having announced multi-gigawatt agreements and AMD potentially capturing at least 8% of the more than $1T 2030 GPU market. The analyst added that AMD expects ASICs and XPUs to serve roughly 25% of the accelerator market over time, with the Cerebras partnership pairing Helios for high-throughput inference with Cerebras' Wafer-Scale Engine for ultra-low-latency token generation, and the Taalas acquisition adding IP and engineering talent for AMD's own low-latency silicon. AMD shares were modestly lower in Monday trading.

NVIDIA's $279 Billion Supply Commitments Face Customer Spending Test

NVIDIA is carrying $279 billion in supply and capacity commitments, up from $119 billion at the prior quarter-end, a schedule that now hinges on whether customer spending keeps pace. The filing allocates $92 billion of those commitments to the remainder of fiscal 2027, $87 billion to fiscal 2028 and $88 billion to fiscal 2029, with smaller amounts afterward, and NVIDIA said it may cancel, reschedule or adjust some agreements before firm orders. NVIDIA also disclosed August guarantees capped at $105 billion for an OpenAI-related SB Energy buildout, which generally begin as the relevant leases commence, with the first construction phase expected in fiscal 2029 and payments dependent on specified tenant defaults. Inventory rose to $31.58 billion from $21.40 billion at the fiscal year-end, while accounts receivable increased to $63.06 billion from $38.47 billion, and some investment-grade customers have payment terms from 90 days to one year. NVIDIA generated $96.22 billion of second-quarter revenue and $63.73 billion of operating income, an operating margin of about 66%, and management guided to $108 billion of next-quarter revenue, plus or minus 2%, excluding China data-center compute sales. At September 30's $228.38 close, NVIDIA's equity was worth about $5.51 trillion, and its trailing free cash flow of roughly $127 billion implies a cash yield of about 2.3%.

Amazon Sets Up $8 Billion Vehicle for Nvidia Grace Blackwell Chips

Amazon has established an $8 billion special purpose vehicle to buy and lease back Nvidia Grace Blackwell chips to AWS clients, an off balance sheet financing tool for AI hardware as cloud capital demands rise. Morgan Stanley has reinstated Nvidia as a Top Pick, citing its view on AI data center demand and capacity expansion. The Amazon vehicle and the Morgan Stanley call both sit inside a wider Nvidia AI infrastructure story, alongside Nvidia's own US$500 billion ecosystem financing plans. The structure lets AWS keep building AI capacity without stacking all the hardware on its own balance sheet, pointing to new funding structures that can support large orders as AI factories become more capital intensive across cloud and sovereign projects. The clearest early signal on whether the model scales would be other hyperscalers or sovereign AI buyers setting up similar chip vehicles that explicitly name Nvidia hardware, with disclosed sizes and timelines.

Chinese State Funds Backed Purchase of Restricted Nvidia AI Chips, Report Says

A Chinese state-backed financing entity funded the purchase of restricted Nvidia processors, according to a Bloomberg News report citing Chinese regulatory filings. The financing, provided by Semi-Tech Leasing Group Co., supported the purchase of more than 700 servers by AI infrastructure developer Glory View Technology Co., and filings with the People's Bank of China cited by Bloomberg show at least one transaction explicitly funded 32 Asustek Computer Inc. servers powered by Nvidia's high-performance B300 Blackwell chips. Nvidia told Bloomberg it is investigating the matter with its equipment manufacturing partners, while Asus reiterated its commitment to international export control regulations. Semi-Tech Leasing, originally established with backing from China's national semiconductor fund and now predominantly controlled by municipal government entities in Shenzhen and Beijing, has deployed more than 11 billion yuan, or $1.6 billion, into compute infrastructure. Under sale-and-leaseback arrangements initiated in mid-2025, Glory View secured over 3 billion yuan, or $450 million, to expand data center capacity, with most of the procured hardware slated for a major China Mobile Ltd. computing hub in Ningxia. After initial scrutiny, Semi-Tech Leasing resubmitted altered filings to Chinese credit registries that removed specific hardware descriptions, supplier details, and server model designations.

AMD to Acquire World Labs for $8.2 Billion in All-Stock Deal

AMD announced on September 28, 2026 that it will acquire World Labs, the spatial intelligence startup founded by ImageNet pioneer Fei-Fei Li, for $8.2 billion in an all-stock transaction — the second-largest acquisition in AMD's history, trailing only its roughly $50 billion purchase of Xilinx in 2022. Li will join AMD as executive vice president and chief scientist, reporting directly to CEO Lisa Su. World Labs, founded in 2024, develops spatial intelligence models that perceive, generate, and reason about three-dimensional environments, including the Marble 3D environment tool, the Atlas world model, and the Spark 2.0 renderer, and had raised approximately $1 billion from investors including Andreessen Horowitz before the deal. The acquisition extends AMD's stack-building strategy, following ZT Systems for $4.9 billion, Silo AI for $665 million, and Pensando for $1.9 billion, and places it in direct competition with NVIDIA's Cosmos, Isaac, GR00T, and Newton physical AI ecosystem. The deal is expected to close by end of 2026, subject to regulatory approval, and Anthropic's compute corridor map already includes a $5 billion commitment to AMD's Instinct MI450 capacity starting in the first half of 2027.

Barclays Sees Up to $30 Billion Upside in Nvidia Hyperscaler Revenue

Barclays said fresh data shared by Nvidia points to at least $30 billion of potential upside to the chipmaker's revenue from the top five cloud providers in both 2026 and 2027. Analyst Tom O'Malley noted that Nvidia disclosed its share of IT capital spending across the five largest cloud service providers in recent years, through the second quarter of 2026, along with an estimate of 44% for 2027. Using Barclays' internet team's assumption that cloud capital spending reaches about $1.1 trillion by 2027, with 80% going to IT, O'Malley calculated hyperscaler revenue of $237 billion in 2026 and $401 billion in 2027, above Barclays' current forecasts of $206 billion and $370 billion. In an upside scenario where historical ratios hold, he sees revenue reaching $246 billion and $417 billion in those years. O'Malley also noted that Nvidia's hyperscaler revenue includes SpaceX while the top five cloud provider figure does not, implying an even larger total, and said sentiment on the name can continue to improve amid solid numbers upside, increased buybacks and the Hugging Face acquisition.
