Samsung's record AI-memory profit powers Korea, but OpenAI revenue gap and bank hacks cloud outlook
▲
Samsung's record quarter confirms AI memory supercycle Samsung guided Q3 operating profit to about 107.4 trillion won, up 782.5% year on year, the most profitable quarter ever by any company. TSMC's revenue jumped 51% and Micron's 379% growth reinforce that AI memory demand is still booming, supporting Samsung, SK Hynix and the Kospi.
This is the core force lifting Korean stocks and the economy right now.
OpenAI revenue shortfall sparks AI hardware selloff OpenAI's annualized revenue run rate came in near $50 billion, about $20 billion below expectations, triggering a sharp selloff in AI hardware stocks from Chinese PCB and MLCC makers to Nvidia and AMD. If AI spending fears spread, Korean chip stocks could face the same sentiment shock.
It is the main new risk that could reverse the AI-driven rally in Korean tech shares.

AI-assisted cyberattacks hit Korean banks, raising regulatory risk At least nine South Korean banks were hit by AI-assisted cyberattacks, with Shinhan Bank losing data on about 25,000 customers and KB Kookmin 119. CrowdStrike linked the attacks to a China-based actor. This raises regulatory and reputational risk for Korean financial stocks and could bring tighter cybersecurity rules.
It is a new, concrete risk to Korea's bank shares and a growing regional threat.
LG Energy Solution and Samsung Electro-Mechanics win AI and battery demand LG Energy Solution's Q3 operating profit more than doubled to 756 billion won, beating estimates by 107% on U.S. tax credits and EV shipments, lifting its shares 4%. Samsung Electro-Mechanics disclosed about 10.5 billion yuan of AI server MLCC orders through 2027, showing Korea's parts makers are also riding the AI buildout.
It shows the AI and EV demand story broadening beyond memory chips to batteries and components.
Foreign investors pull $131 billion from South Korean stocks as AI rally fades
Foreign investors have withdrawn $131 billion from South Korean equities this year, the largest outflow among major Asian markets, as enthusiasm for artificial intelligence-related investments fades. Trading turnover in South Korea's $4.3 trillion equity market has plunged 70% from its late-May peak, while the benchmark Kospi has fallen 22% in the second half of 2026, according to Bloomberg. The reversal follows a first-half rally that made the Kospi the world's best-performing major equity benchmark, driven largely by demand for AI memory chips. Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, which together account for more than half the index's weighting, have become a source of vulnerability, and Samsung shares declined Thursday despite the company reporting a nearly ninefold increase in quarterly operating profit. Market support from corporate share repurchases is also weakening, with Samsung and SK Hynix approaching completion of combined buyback programmes worth 55 trillion won, or $41 billion, while outstanding margin loans have fallen to approximately 33 trillion won from a June peak of 38.6 trillion won and brokerage deposits have dropped to around 100 trillion won from nearly 140 trillion won. Investors are increasingly favouring Taiwan, whose Taiex has gained 70% this year and outperformed the Kospi by approximately 23 percentage points last quarter, with UBS Global Wealth Management saying it prefers Taiwan equities for tactical AI exposure.

Console Sales Hit 13-Year Low as Memory Shortage Lifts Prices Ahead of GTA VI
Video game console sales have fallen to their lowest August level in 13 years, with the memory shortage continuing to weigh on consumer prices. Dan Howley, Yahoo Finance Technology Editor, said a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series S or Series X bought in 2020 or 2021 is now worth more than its original price, with consoles going for $150 to $200 above their initial launch price. He attributed the increases to President Trump's tariffs last year and to the data center build out, which has made storage chips and memory chips harder to come by and more expensive, costs that companies like Apple, Samsung, HP and Dell pass on to consumers. Nintendo raised the price of its original Switch, which came out in 2017, and also raised the price of its Switch 2 by $50 when President Trump introduced tariffs on consoles made in China. Howley said the hope is that Grand Theft Auto VI, which launches in November, will lift console demand, noting that GTA 5 had made $6 billion as of a few years ago and that developers have moved their games earlier or into 2027 to avoid its blast radius.

AI-Abused Cyberattacks Surge in Japan and South Korea, Forcing Government and Corporate Response
Cyberattacks are mounting across Japan and South Korea, forcing governments and companies to respond urgently. In Japan, unauthorized access has surged broadly across industries, hitting financial firms such as Daiwa Securities and Sompo Japan, retailers including Bookoff Group Holdings and Lawson, the restaurant chain Yakiniku King, and car-sharing operator Times Mobility. The impact was especially severe at IDC Frontier, a SoftBank subsidiary in the cloud business, where the attack left 495 contracted companies and local governments unable to view their websites or exposed their data. In South Korea, nine banks and large churches suffered cyberattacks that may have used AI tools, and U.S. cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike said a 26-year-old suspect living in China most likely could not have carried out the attack without AI assistance. According to TrendAI, cybersecurity incidents involving organizations based in Japan from January through September this year have already surpassed the total for all of last year, with 86 cases in September, up about 18 percent from August and about 37 percent from July. Experts warn that the spread of AI is making it easier even for criminals without advanced skills to launch attacks, making cybercrime cheaper and more accessible.

EM&T Raises Fiscal 2026 Revenue Guidance 62% to $11 Million, Reaffirms $460 Million Fiscal 2027 Outlook
Evolution Metals & Technologies Corp. raised its fiscal 2026 revenue guidance to $10 million to $11 million, up from the previous range of $5 million to $8 million issued on September 10, 2026, a 62% increase at the midpoint. The company also reaffirmed its fiscal 2027 revenue guidance of $400 million to $460 million, whose $430 million midpoint represents roughly 41 times the raised fiscal 2026 midpoint. The Miami-based critical materials and advanced manufacturing company said the raise reflects an expanded ex-China rare earth feedstock position, improved rare earth pricing and continued strong commercial demand. Thirteen additional ULVAC sintered magnet production machines are scheduled for delivery in October 2026 and will be installed immediately after delivery in Pohang, Republic of Korea, where they are expected to lift annual magnet production capacity above 10,000 metric tons, including approximately 6,000 metric tons of high-performance sintered magnets. Chief Executive Officer Frank Moon said the company will showcase what it believes is the largest commercial magnet facility in the world, ex-China, on December 17, 2026, and President Andrew Knaggs pointed to DFARS 252.225-7052, which is expected to extend the mine-to-magnet restriction across the entire neodymium-iron-boron magnet supply chain beginning January 1, 2027.
Samsung Posts Record $80.2 Billion Quarter as TSMC Revenue Jumps 50%
Samsung Electronics reported the most profitable quarter ever by any company at $80.2 billion, while Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company posted record third-quarter revenue of $46.7 billion, up 50% year over year. Earlier this week, SpaceX announced it will raise $40 billion in debt to buy NVIDIA chips as it scales its AI compute, with a payback period well under one year thanks to deals with Google and Anthropic. The results and the SpaceX debt raise suggest record capital expenditure on AI infrastructure will continue.
SK hynix's Solidigm Picks Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley to Lead US$10b IPO
SK hynix's US flash-memory arm Solidigm has selected Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley to lead a planned IPO that could raise about US$10b and value the unit near US$100b. The news comes as SK hynix shares have been caught between IPO excitement and broader chip sector nerves, with the 1 day share price return falling 4.35% to leave the stock at US$170.50 and the 7 day share price return down 11.89% as investors position ahead of October earnings. Even so, the 90 day share price return of 1.48% suggests momentum has cooled rather than collapsed. On valuation, SK hynix trades at a P/E of 7.6x, against 50.3x for the US Semiconductor group and 61x for close peers, while carrying a Return on Equity of 61.7% and forecasts for 26.9% annual profit expansion. The story could change quickly if Solidigm's IPO timetable slips or if chip demand softens further.
Chinese developer closes off open-source ARTEX after it was linked to hacking South Korean banks
The developer of the open-source penetration testing tool ARTEX, developed in China, has announced it is ending updates and switching to closed-source software, with no further public releases and no maintenance support, because the tool was misused. The developer, who uses the GitHub account Autumn-27, said on Thursday, October 8, that ARTEX was built to help organizations test the security of their systems, not to support illegal activity. Earlier, CrowdStrike, a US cybersecurity company, disclosed that the suspect behind the cyberattacks on South Korean financial institutions may be a 26-year-old man living in China's Guangdong province, who used the ARTEX tool together with Anthropic's Claude Code. ARTEX was launched on GitHub this year as open source, an AI agent designed to automate penetration testing and connect to external AI models such as ChatGPT, Claude and DeepSeek to help organizations find vulnerabilities in their networks. Since late September, several banks in South Korea have been targeted in cyberattacks, prompting police to open an investigation, while President Lee Jae-myung called for strict countermeasures. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said the ministry had no detailed information about the case, and stressed that China has always opposed and cracked down on cyberattacks.

Mexico's Auto Exports Fall 12% in September on U.S. Tariff Impact
Mexico's auto export volumes fell 12% year-on-year in September, the largest drop since December 2025, according to data released on the 8th by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography. Analysts attribute the decline to the impact of tariff policies imposed by the United States, Mexico's largest market. Monthly production fell 15%, while domestic sales rose 8%, helping to cushion the blow to the auto manufacturing industry, the country's largest industrial sector. Government officials are pushing ahead with a review of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, and Mexican-made vehicles are still subject to a 25% tariff even as negotiations continue. Mexican authorities estimate that the burden would be reduced to 10-12% if rules requiring the use of North American parts are complied with. Janet Quiroz, director of economic analysis at brokerage Monex, noted that "the September data is more a warning sign than a sign of crisis. If this trend continues through 2027, we may be discussing a more structural problem for Mexican manufacturing." U.S. auto giant General Motors announced last year a $4 billion investment plan to shift some production from Mexico to the United States in response to volatile tariff policy. Along with General Motors, Ford Motor and Nissan also saw sharp declines in exports in September, while South Korea's Kia, Germany's BMW and Mazda increased exports and filled the gap. Mazda in particular more than doubled its exports year-on-year. Mercedes-Benz closed its joint venture plant with Nissan last May, and in September recorded zero production and zero exports for the first time since it began overseas shipments eight years ago. The Mexican Automotive Industry Association stressed at a press conference on the 8th that Mexico remains the largest foreign supplier of automobiles to the United States. According to the association's data, exports to the United States fell 5% in the January-September period of 2026, while exports to Canada, Mexico's second-largest market, rose by just over 9%.

BBC and Channel 4 in Preliminary Talks with Government on Merging Some Operations
The BBC and Channel 4, both public broadcasters in the UK, are holding preliminary talks with the government about merging some of their operations, according to two people familiar with the matter. If realised, it would amount to a large-scale restructuring for Britain's public broadcasting industry. One of the proposals under discussion would see Channel 4's advertising business, its channels such as E4 and Film4, and its video streaming service combined with UKTV, the BBC's commercial subsidiary, with the newly envisaged entity owned 50-50 by the BBC and Channel 4. That would be a deeper tie-up than the plan BBC Director-General Matt Brittin has previously set out for offering Channel 4 content on the BBC's iPlayer streaming service. The talks are expected to intensify next year if the BBC makes progress in negotiations with the government over a new funding system, and the range of assets folded into the joint venture could also expand. The joint venture under consideration, meanwhile, is not expected to include Channel 4's flagship terrestrial channel, which may receive a fee from the venture.

OpenAI's annualized revenue forecast gap of about $20 billion sparks panic, A-share computing hardware sector falls across the board
On October 9, the A-share computing hardware sector suffered a deep correction. The STAR 50 Index fell nearly 4% intraday, and the semiconductor index dropped more than 4%. AI hardware segments such as MLCC, PCB, and CPO led the decline. Multiple stocks including Fenghua Advanced Technology and Jinan Guoji hit the daily limit down. Zhongji Innolight fell more than 5%, and a batch of PCB stocks such as Wus Printed Circuit and Shennan Circuits dropped more than 6%. Overnight in the US, the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index tumbled 3.39%, with Nvidia, AMD, Broadcom, and Intel all falling. Applied Optoelectronics dropped more than 13%, and Coherent fell 9.63%. In Asian markets, Japan's SoftBank fell more than 4%, and Kioxia dropped nearly 2%. According to market sources, financial documents disclosed by OpenAI to investors show that as of the end of September, its annualized revenue run rate was about $50 billion, significantly lower than the previously widely circulated expectation of nearly $70 billion, a gap of about $20 billion, triggering market panic. On the industry fundamentals side, MLCC demand has not weakened. On October 6, Samsung Electro-Mechanics announced a supply contract for AI server MLCCs with a large global enterprise, worth about 285.611 billion Korean won, approximately 1.427 billion yuan. Since June 2026, Samsung Electro-Mechanics has disclosed four AI server MLCC orders totaling about 2.11 trillion Korean won, approximately 10.519 billion yuan, all long-term agreements extending to the end of 2027. Last night, Dongshan Precision issued a statement responding to rumors about restrictions on optical chip procurement, saying that the claim of a 65% US-origin material ratio is an unofficial market rumor, and that some of the optical chips used in its optical modules are self-developed and self-produced, accounting for no more than 10% of BOM costs. CITIC Securities released a fourth-quarter technology strategy research report yesterday, arguing that the current global tech stock correction mainly reflects valuation contraction rather than earnings downgrades, and that capital expenditure growth from 2027 to 2028 will support upward earnings in the computing power supply chain.

Earlier, Micron Technology reported fourth-quarter fiscal 2026 revenue of 54.23 billion US dollars, up about 379% year on year, and guided next-quarter revenue to approximately 61.5 billion dollars. Guolian Minsheng Securities stressed that the memory industry is entering a supercycle, with AI server demand continuing to drive upgrades in HBM, DRAM, and enterprise SSD configurations, while supply-side constraints on advanced process capacity and long-term agreement lock-in mechanisms make the upward price trend clear. Leading manufacturers such as Micron have already locked in more than 35% of revenue through 2030 via long-term agreements and plan to boost shareholder returns. BOE and OnePlus jointly launch next-generation OLED display to offset panel price decline pressure
On October 9, BOE and OnePlus jointly launched a next-generation OLED display to offset the profitability pressure caused by falling OLED panel prices. Zhou Hua, chief analyst at CINNO Research, believes the flexible OLED panel industry is currently under significant pressure. Rising storage costs are squeezing profit margins for smartphone makers, and combined with shrinking handset demand, the supply-demand imbalance has intensified, driving panel prices steadily downward. CINNO Research expects the price of a 6.7-inch flexible OLED panel to fall to 18 US dollars in the third quarter of 2026, a decline of 50 percent compared with the first quarter of 2023. BOE Chairman Chen Yanshun said at the online briefing on the 2026 interim results on September 22 that this year has been very difficult for the OLED panel business. The storage value alone in a single phone exceeds 3,000 yuan, and global smartphone sales this year are around 1.2 billion units, down nearly 12 percent from last year. BOE's OLED business is expected to maintain growth this year, but still faces considerable operating pressure. Data from Sigmaintell show that in the first half of 2026, global shipments of flexible OLED smartphone panels totaled 350 million units, up 15.6 percent year on year. Of that, shipments from mainland China were about 200 million units, up about 5.9 percent year on year. Samsung Display ranked first with about 120 million units, while BOE ranked second globally and first in China with 81.4 million units. Wang Xiaoya, research director of Sigmaintell's mobile business unit, said the growth in shipment scale has not yet translated into improved profitability. Domestic OLED panel makers generally face considerable operating pressure, and the industry is at a critical stage of transitioning from scale expansion to value enhancement. Samsung Display's OLED panel business is currently profitable, but China's OLED panel industry as a whole has not yet reached profitability. One of BOE's goals for 2026 is to substantially improve the profitability of its OLED panel business and strive to move toward break-even. Manufacturers such as Visionox, Tianma, and TCL CSOT are also seeking breakthroughs in high-value-added products.

Samsung Wallet Adds USDC Stablecoin Transfers Across 82 Million Devices
Samsung Wallet is adding support for transfers using USDC, the stablecoin issued by Circle that is designed to maintain a 1-to-1 value with the US dollar. The feature will reach 82 million Samsung devices and will run largely on Solana, according to commentary from Scott Melker on "The Daily Wolf." The capability is aimed primarily at remittances and cross-border payments, and users will not need a separate crypto app or to manage private keys themselves, since the functionality sits inside the Samsung Wallet already installed on their phones. Melker framed the move as a major step toward mainstream adoption, arguing blockchain wins when it is completely abstracted away and users never know they are using crypto, and compared it to SoFi's plan to settle its Mastercard entirely on blockchain rails while merchants still get paid in dollars. He added that the development implies significant traffic for Solana.
Elevra Lithium Signs Spodumene Supply Deal With LG Energy Solution
Elevra Lithium rose 5.5% in Thursday's trading after signing a binding contract to supply spodumene concentrate to South Korea's LG Energy Solution from its North American Lithium project in Quebec. Under the deal, Elevra will deliver 240K dry metric tons of spodumene concentrate over three years, with shipments expected to begin in 2026. Samsung Q3 profit surges nearly ninefold as TSMC revenue grows 51%, but shares remain under pressure
Samsung Electronics reported third-quarter operating profit up nearly ninefold to 107.4 trillion won, or about 80.1 billion dollars, a record high, while revenue more than doubled. The figures still fell slightly short of the analyst average estimate. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., or TSMC, reported record third-quarter revenue of 1.49 trillion Taiwan dollars, or about 46.71 billion dollars, up 50% from a year earlier and above market expectations. LSEG SmartEstimate, which compiles estimates from 19 analysts, had forecast revenue of 1.46 trillion Taiwan dollars, compared with 989.92 billion Taiwan dollars a year earlier. Despite the record results, Samsung shares fell 2.4% in the South Korean stock market, and shares of suppliers in the Japanese market such as Tokyo Electron, Advantest and Ibiden also declined, amid concerns over how long AI investment reliant on rising debt financing can continue as global borrowing costs climb. Demand for high-bandwidth memory chips, or HBM, used with Nvidia Corp.'s AI accelerator chips has benefited Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron Technology. Counterpoint Research raised its forecast for third-quarter DRAM chip prices to a 10% to 20% rise from the previous quarter, up from 5% to 10%, after customers rushed orders. Analysts at Citigroup expect HBM4 chip prices to rise 100% to 150% next year, even though Citigroup cut its full-year profit estimates because of the stronger South Korean won. Analysts expect Samsung's chip business to post operating profit of 110 trillion won, with the company due to release full financial results on October 29.

CrowdStrike Ties South Korean Bank Hacks to China-Based AI-Assisted Attacker
CrowdStrike said a suspected China-based attacker used AI tools to target South Korean financial institutions between late September and early October. The U.S. cybersecurity firm said the unidentified threat actor used Chinese-developed ARTEX, an open-source AI penetration-testing tool, alongside large language models, and assessed with moderate confidence that the attacker was a Chinese speaker who was financially motivated. CrowdStrike also found Claude Code session records containing personal details that may point to a 26-year-old based in Guangdong, China, though it said it could not definitively associate those details with the attacker. South Korea posts $46.1 billion current account surplus in August, second-highest on record
South Korea's central bank announced that the country recorded a current account surplus of 46.1 billion dollars in August, up 4 billion dollars from the previous month and surging 36.2 billion dollars from the same month a year earlier. It is the second-highest figure on record, trailing only June, which set a record of 49.73 billion dollars, and it marks the third consecutive month above the 40 billion dollar level, after July came in at 42 billion dollars. The main driver was strong exports amid the global semiconductor industry upcycle. In detail, the goods account surplus stood at 46.81 billion dollars, after exports jumped 82.1 percent year on year to 104.8 billion dollars, while imports rose 23.8 percent to 57.99 billion dollars. Chip exports more than tripled based on customs clearance data, while petroleum product exports rose 64.9 percent, but automobile and ship exports fell 30.1 percent and 45.2 percent respectively. The services account posted a deficit of 1.68 billion dollars, driven by business services and tourism, with the tourism deficit widening to 770 million dollars in August from 340 million dollars in July. The primary income account recorded a surplus of 1.92 billion dollars. For the first eight months of this year, South Korea's cumulative current account surplus reached 279.2 billion dollars, nearly quadruple the same period a year earlier, and August marked the 40th consecutive month of current account surplus since May 2023. Earlier, in 2025, South Korea posted a record annual surplus of 123.05 billion dollars, surpassing the previous record of 105.1 billion dollars set in 2015.
LG Energy Solution Q3 Operating Profit More Than Doubles, Beats Estimates
LG Energy Solution reported preliminary third-quarter operating profit of 756 billion won, more than double the 365.5 billion won Bloomberg consensus estimate, a beat of about 107%. Revenue is expected to rise 59% to 9.6 trillion won for the three months ended September 30, according to the company's regulatory filing. The results were supported by U.S. production tax credits tied to the company's expanding energy-storage system production and incentives for American-made electric-vehicle batteries, along with the restart of production at its North American joint-venture facilities and a pickup in EV shipments to Europe. Excluding those U.S. production tax credits, LG Energy Solution would have posted operating profit of 339.1 billion won. Shares rose 4.09% to 407,000 won, their highest level since June 18, sharply outperforming a 0.6% fall in the broader KOSPI index. The company, which supplies batteries to Tesla, General Motors and Hyundai Motor, is scheduled to release its detailed third-quarter results on November 3.

Samsung Electro-Mechanics Secures Another Major MLCC Order for AI Servers, Contract Worth About 285.611 Billion Korean Won
Samsung Electro-Mechanics disclosed in a regulatory filing on October 6 that it signed a supply contract that day with a major global company for multilayer ceramic capacitors, or MLCCs, used in AI servers, with a contract value of about 285.611 billion Korean won, equivalent to roughly 210 million US dollars. Earlier, on September 1, Samsung Electro-Mechanics had disclosed a 1.07 trillion Korean won MLCC supply contract with a well-known global customer, also for AI server applications, with a supply period covering all of 2027. A research report from Northeast Securities noted that demand for high-capacitance MLCCs in AI servers is five to ten times that of traditional servers. As major Japanese and Korean manufacturers shift capacity toward higher-end automotive-grade and AI products, the supply of mid- and low-capacitance MLCCs is experiencing structural shortages, and expectations for industry price increases are strong. Among companies, Sinocera is a core leader in MLCC dielectric powder, with a domestic market share exceeding 80 percent, while Sidike's full range of functional release films for MLCCs covers leading MLCC manufacturers.
Emerging markets see $26.3 billion net outflow in September on Fed hawkishness, IIF says
Foreign investors pulled a net $26.3 billion from emerging market bonds and equities in September, according to a report published by the Institute of International Finance on the 7th. It was the first month of net outflows since June, driven by rising U.S. Treasury yields and a stronger dollar amid the Federal Reserve's hawkish stance. Of that total, non-resident outflows from emerging market bond markets came to $7 billion, the first net outflow since March, when escalating conflict in the Middle East rattled global markets. Emerging markets came under pressure in September after the Fed, led by Chair Warsh, decided on its first rate hike since 2023 and signaled that inflation remained a continuing concern. Meanwhile, heavy overseas selling of South Korean stocks helped push September outflows from emerging market equities to $19.2 billion. The IIF noted that foreign investors' selling of South Korean shares has continued almost without interruption since the start of the year, peaking in September after the KOSPI rose 62 percent year to date.

Apple and LG to Co-Develop Seven Smart Home Devices Ahead of Oct. 13 Event
Apple is co-developing seven smart home devices with LG Electronics that will carry the LG brand despite being shaped by Apple's engineers, Bloomberg reported Tuesday, October 6. The lineup includes a video doorbell, smart deadbolt lock, thermostat, temperature sensor, indoor camera, outdoor camera, and floodlight camera, and LG has already filed regulatory applications with the US FCC and UL Solutions under names including LG Video Doorbell Wired, LG Floodlight Cam, LG Outdoor Cam Plug-In, LG Indoor Cam Plug-In, LG Smart Deadbolt Lock, LG Smart Thermostat, and LG Temperature Sensor. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman described the structure as a second-party supplier arrangement in which Apple can shape design, tailor features and oversee engineering while LG handles manufacturing and customer support, filling the product gaps that have left HomeKit trailing Amazon's Ring and Google's Nest. Apple shares closed at $333.63 on Tuesday and were trading up 1.07% in pre-market activity ahead of Wednesday's NYSE open, while LG Electronics shares fell 10.54% to 208,000 KRW on the Seoul exchange Wednesday as a preliminary Q3 earnings miss overshadowed the partnership news. Most devices are expected to support Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Thread, and the Matter interoperability standard, with the smart deadbolt also including ultra-wideband support, and Chosun noted the deal would mark LG's first sale of smart door locks outside Korea and its return to indoor security cameras after roughly a decade.

Cars.com Report Finds Hybrid Demand Outpacing Supply as Gas Prices Climb
Hybrid shopper interest is running at roughly double the share of hybrids on dealer lots, according to new data from Cars.com. In its latest report, Cars.com said 25% of surveyed shoppers named a hybrid as the powertrain they're most seriously considering, while hybrids make up only about one in eight new listings; the survey of 648 recent car buyers and shoppers was fielded from July 31 to Aug. 6. The mismatch is showing up in how fast the cars sell, with days on the lot for new hybrids falling to 46 in August, down 10% from a year ago, while new hybrid supply grew just 1%, and new vehicles overall sat for 73 days, up from 70 a year earlier. The shopper data lines up with automaker results, as Hyundai said its hybrid sales rose 39% in September and 35% in the third quarter, both records, with hybrids accounting for 28% of September volume, while sister brand Kia said its hybrid sales jumped 152% in September and Toyota North America reported its electrified vehicle sales, which include hybrids and EVs, jumped 29% in Q3 as overall volume climbed only 0.6%. Cars.com points to pump prices as one driver, with gas averaging $4.19 a gallon in August and Energy Information Administration data showing the national average at $4.46 by mid-September, and lead analyst Peter Hoang wrote that with gas prices climbing again, hybrids look positioned to keep benefiting from shoppers hedging against pump prices without fully committing to an EV. The findings come as the EV market enters its first year without federal tax credits, after the $7,500 federal EV tax credit expired on Sept. 30, 2025, with days on lot for new EVs falling to 93 in August, the fifth straight monthly improvement, but still double the time for hybrids, and average new-EV prices falling 11% from a year ago to $57,046.

Major South Korean churches investigate cyberattack, risking leak of 850,000 members' data
Two large Christian churches in South Korea are rushing to investigate a cyberattack after personal data of many members was found on overseas servers. Oasis Security disclosed that it found member data, account information, and attack logs linked to Yoido Full Gospel Church and Sarang Church in Seoul. Yoido Full Gospel Church said today that a preliminary review found data of as many as 850,000 members may have leaked, mostly names and dates of birth, while a smaller portion included records of changes to resident registration numbers, addresses, and phone numbers. The church has notified potentially affected members, suspended external access to its servers, and changed passwords to prevent further leaks. Sarang Church said it has set up a task force to investigate the attack and has notified the relevant authorities. Oasis Security said some evidence points to the use of AI tools, including references to sub-agents, as well as numerous attack reports that appear to have been generated by automated systems. The attack comes as South Korea faces a wave of cyberattacks; previously, several commercial banks were hacked, causing customer personal data to leak. President Lee Jae-myung said on Tuesday that he believes AI may have been used in the attacks on those banks.

South Korean Retail Investors Lose $1.7 Billion on Chip-Stock Leveraged ETFs
South Korean retail investors have suffered combined losses of about 2.3 trillion won, or roughly $1.7 billion, from investments in leveraged exchange-traded products tracking Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix shares in just a few months. Data from the office of Choi Eun-seok, a lawmaker from the People Power Party, shows that customers of 10 South Korean securities firms incurred these losses from investments in leveraged ETFs and instruments tracking Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix shares between May 27 and August 14. The figures mark the first clear disclosure of the scale of damage from leveraged single-stock products, after such products were launched in South Korea in May and quickly gained popularity among retail investors amid a speculative frenzy in artificial-intelligence-related stocks. The data came from South Korea's Financial Supervisory Service, which compiled information from several securities firms, including Mirae Asset Securities, Kiwoom Securities, Samsung Securities and NH Investment & Securities. The losses prompted South Korean regulators to begin introducing measures to curb speculation starting in July, including a temporary suspension of new listings for leveraged single-stock products, raising the minimum deposit investors must set aside, and requiring investors to complete training before trading such products. After regulators tightened the rules, trading volume in leveraged ETFs tracking chip stocks in South Korea fell sharply, reflecting that the speculative fervor among retail investors is beginning to cool.
Taiwan Stocks Surge 72%, Overtaking South Korea as World's Hottest Market on AI Wave
Taiwan's stock market is emerging as a more compelling choice than South Korea's for investors looking to ride the artificial intelligence wave in the final stretch of 2026, after growth in the AI industry began spreading from chipmakers to other businesses across the supply chain. Taiwan's Taiex index has jumped roughly 72% since the start of 2026, the highest among more than 90 global equity indexes tracked by Bloomberg, while South Korea's KOSPI has gained about 63%, ranking second. In the third quarter, the Taiex outperformed the KOSPI by about 23 percentage points, the widest gap since the early 2000s, and earnings estimate upgrades for Taiwanese listed companies outpaced South Korea's for the first time since March 2025. Earnings estimates for companies in the Taiex were revised up by about 19% in the quarter ending in September, compared with an increase of about 15% for KOSPI companies. A Bank of America fund manager survey in September found that about 40% of respondents said they were overweight Taiwanese stocks relative to the benchmark, compared with 25% who held the same view on South Korean stocks. In the survey of 87 fund managers overseeing a combined 211 billion dollars in assets, 35% said Taiwan would be the Asian stock market to benefit most from AI going forward, while only 5% chose South Korea. A key factor is Taiwan's industrial structure, which is linked to the AI supply chain at many levels, from semiconductor design and manufacturing to chip packaging, networking systems and servers. South Korea's market, by contrast, still relies on just a few large chipmakers, particularly Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, which fell between 19% and 33% in the three months ending in September after six straight quarters of gains. Societe Generale continues to favour Taiwanese stocks over South Korean ones, expecting the rise in memory chip prices to slow over the coming quarters before returning to normal in 2028 amid growing competition from Chinese producers. However, Peter Lee, a managing director at Citigroup, believes investors should start accumulating shares such as Samsung and SK Hynix, because the market may be underestimating demand for high-bandwidth memory chips, or HBM, in 2027. On valuations, Taiwan's market trades at about 18 times forward 12-month earnings estimates, above the KOSPI's roughly 5.5 times. And Taiwan's rally is not confined to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. alone. TSMC shares rose 2.9% in the quarter ending in September, their sixth straight quarterly gain, while about 10% of stocks in the Taiex have at least doubled since the start of the year, compared with just 4.1% of KOSPI stocks and 5.7% of stocks in Japan's Nikkei 225.

US Electric Vehicle Market Forecast to Reach US$630.2 Million by 2030
The United States electric vehicle market is forecast to grow from US$385.0 million in 2025 to approximately US$630.2 million by 2030, according to a new ResearchAndMarkets.com databook. The market is projected to grow 10.8% annually to reach US$426.5 million in 2026, following a CAGR of 9.7% during 2021-2025, and is expected to record a CAGR of 10.3% from 2026 to 2030. Affordability is becoming central to adoption as consumers weigh monthly payments, insurance, charging availability, resale value, and household suitability, with demand shifting toward lower-priced models and practical crossovers including the Chevrolet Equinox EV, Hyundai IONIQ 5, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Tesla Model Y, and Honda Prologue. The end of federal clean vehicle credits after September 30, 2025, has increased the importance of automaker pricing, leasing programs, dealer incentives, and state-level support, while automakers balance battery-electric investment with hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and extended-range EVs. Charging access is emerging as a competitive advantage, with GM stating its customers can use more than 21,500 Tesla Superchargers with a GM-approved NACS adapter, and Hyundai extending compatible network access to eligible U.S. EV owners. Localized production is also a strategic priority, illustrated by Hyundai's Georgia Metaplant producing the IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 9, while GM and Hyundai have announced plans for five co-developed vehicles, including a North American commercial van, and Volkswagen and Rivian are advancing a joint venture focused on software-defined vehicle architecture.

Goldman Sachs warns Samsung faces triple-hit volatility on October 8
Goldman Sachs analyst Heather Oh warned clients that a rare convergence of three simultaneous market events on Thursday, October 8 will expose Samsung Electronics to an unusual burst of near-term volatility. The three events are Samsung's third-quarter preliminary earnings report, potential mechanical selling from semiconductor ETF rebalancing, and options expiry combined with the roll-off of the company's buyback program. Goldman estimates Samsung's third-quarter operating profit at W106 trillion, in line with street consensus of W105.5 trillion but a 5% cut from its prior estimate of W112 trillion, a revision the bank attributed primarily to Korean won strength, with the average USD/KRW rate tracking around 1,418 versus its prior assumption of 1,460. Seven semiconductor ETFs with combined assets under management of roughly W19 trillion, approximately $14 billion, are scheduled to rebalance on October 8, and local media and the street expect Samsung to face outflows due to a weighting cap in those vehicles while SK Hynix and semiconductor equipment makers absorb the offsetting inflows. Samsung's W15 trillion repurchase program was expected to be completed this week, eliminating a reliable source of daily buying support, and foreign investors were net sellers of Samsung for five consecutive days ahead of October 8, totaling net outflows of approximately $2.6 billion. Goldman maintained a constructive view on the operating fundamentals, saying it believes W100tn+ operating profit is backed by solid DRAM and NAND fundamentals with HBM growth the standout, and it expects Samsung's HBM bit shipments to grow close to 50% quarter-on-quarter in the third quarter, driven by the ramp of HBM4 shipments, while conventional DRAM bit growth is described as largely flattish given the limited level of inventory.

Vance Confirms Alaska LNG Project Will Proceed Despite South Korea's Request to Assess Its Value
JD Vance, the US vice president, has confirmed that the liquefied natural gas project in Alaska will move forward, even though several details still need to be discussed with South Korea. Speaking to reporters on Monday, October 5, he said the project will happen because the market has a high level of demand for natural gas from the United States. Earlier, President Donald Trump announced last week that South Korea will invest 200 billion dollars in various US projects, including the natural gas pipeline project in Alaska, though no final conclusion has been reached. Meanwhile, Lee Hyung-il, South Korea's finance minister, told parliament on Tuesday, October 6, that the government will begin reviewing investment in the project to assess its commercial viability. Kim Jong-kwan, South Korea's industry minister, told another parliamentary committee that commercial viability is a key condition of the project, but the project also has strategic importance given energy supply disruptions caused by conflict in the Middle East.
